I am a third year BA (hons) Media Production student studying at The University of Winchester and am undertaking my final year project in documentary film.
My project is based on examining free party culture and the ideology of anti-conservatism. The film will explore the social, economic and political situation of England in the early nineties and make a comparison with the present day.
I would like to examine areas such as; commercialisation of free party culture, the connection between drugs and electronic music, media representation of free parties and the relation between music genre and sub culture. Current news stories regarding ‘Scumoween’ have interested me in investigating how the recession and social media are fuelling a new generation of rave culture.
After researching this topic in depth I have become very interested in finding out more about free parties/festivals and how social networking, politics and the economy are influencing this generation of partygoers.
Having researched for the last few months, I believe it would be massively beneficial to seek advice from current participants in the field, and would like to ask if you would help me further my research and participate in the film.
If this request is not relevant to you would you be able to recommend someone who you think may be able to assist me?
I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind Regards,
Jasper Amy

My supervising lecturer can be contacted to verify this project, details on request…
It is tempting, almost went to Winchester uni. Not far down the road but find it hard not to be suspicious
im also really tempted, but the last time i did something like this my words ende up in The Guardian newspaper
I’d be more than happy to have a say! As a regular squat & outdoor party-goer, I’d have a lot to say about this.
id be up for this, as long as the individual in question can be verified to not be an asshole! and would agree to meet somewhere like a random disused building, and the interview to be done with masks on
someone would have to facilitate the meet though!
from checking out that website, does look interesting. if anybody was going to speak to them id make 100% sure that they werent a journalist first!

agreed! the last thing you want is to actually be speaking to some journo who twists every word you say, whoever does do this should be very carefull!
they aren’t a journalist yet, just a wannabe one. TBH most of these films don’t go much further than the uni but although this dude most probably is sound, not all his lecturers may be – and for all you know their partner might be a Detective Inspector (actually loads of teachers and coppers tend to form couples…) also once that film is made it and all the raw footage are probably on some uni computer which others can get access too…
if you contribute, treat it as if you were going on “proper telly”…

i think id rather do the “propper telly” thing properly and when the time is right then this tbh
do they still have the Banksy “HTV makes me wanna smoke crack” in your area? :laugh_at:

i wish! however the sentiment is still as strong as ever!
they have managed to protect a few banksy’s in bristol, michael douglas with his shotgun is still at the foot of the m32, someone ruined the face but its been restored, thats been there a fair few years, and the sniper with the kid and the ballon, the lovers etc
a few pieces did get targetd recently by bristol rovers fans after an apparent comment banksy made about bristol having a shite football team, they paint balled the lover and a few smaller pieces around bristol with blue paint pellets but these have been restored now!
i think the newest piece i have seen locally is at the m32 fly over, you can only see it if you drive past at a certan angle, basicly as you approach the roundabout you see a metal fence surrounding the roundabout made up of individual bars, as you pull away from the lights you can see that a spacific side of each bar has been painted to form the word anksy! dunno if it is a banksy and he got rumbled doing it or weather its an equally clever lil sausage! very clever who ever it was!
mind you HTV’s gone too (I used to fix their audio and video distribution gear!) and “ITV Wales and West makes me wanna smoke crack” just doesn’t scan properly…
that rave my mates got sent down for was on ITV and the reporter was blatantly pro-police, embedded behind their lines and given full support protection.. a lot of mainstream camera ops now work with the Forward Intelligence teams as if they play nice they get good footage, especially as radio scanners are no longer able to monitor cops in the UK..

Im pretty sure my lecturer is not in partnership with a detective inspector. This is the film he made last year:
Mugabe, Me and a Million Tampons
I think he just wants to make the world a better place.
Anyone who is interested in getting involved with the film but feels suspicious don’t worry i’m not going to just rock up with a camera and point it at you. I will want to meet up first, run through my ideas with you and show you the questions i want to ask you.

to be fair even coppers want to make the world a better place and not all of them are right wing knuckle draggers – many only disagree with raves because of the wider impacts of illegal drug use particularly party drugs users slipping into problematic use.
in fact if your film or research also addresses this and puts across a balanced view there is no moral right for the cops or other authorities to suppress it, but it will still be of interest for any potential intelligence material, just as the footage shot by “yoof TV” producers in the 1990s was reviewed.
if you aren’t editing it on your personal equipment what security precautions are you taking with raw footage/rushes? I know some college ICT staff can be a bit funny about external storage devices being attached to college kit (with good reason) but would suggest if its “not allowed” you get your lecturer to explain why you need this.
I take it you are aware of the various digital methods which can be used to protect sources…

well Jasper hasn’t come back since the 30th and didn’t respond but having out of curiosity been through the FB page about Scum dancing and a few folks Facebook profiles, I reallly doubt there is any real connection between “free party culture” and anti-conservatism or any kind of progressive political actvism.
yes there are some folks what still do both, but the bulk of people attending free parties are there for hedonism and as its an easy/cheap option for a night out in some areas, and where the authorities are unable to stop their drug use.
from the FB profiles, although they are unlikely to be great fans of Cameroon and Clegg, they support centre right populist political causes and the paradoxical views of wanting government to leave them alone to take drugs/party, whilst coming down like a ton of bricks on those they disagree with.
Many of them are just as fond of commercial as underground music, and as soon as these events get locked off enough or become harder to get to (people from London where whinging like fuck about having to get to Enfield, which although on the outskirts is hardly out in the sticks!) they will drop straight back into the commercial townie lifestyles, as has already happened to a large extent in areas where the authorities have stopped both licensed and unlicnensed music events.
Meanwhile, those who are genuine progressive activists are older (for instance at 38 I am one of the youngest in my Transition Towns group), distancing themselves from the hedonistic night time economy and getting on with their activism as a separate issue entirely.
