The Police service should be efficient in its use of taxpayers money for day to day stuff but a price can’t be put on democracy. If cost is an issue, then remove money from the MOD and FCO to pay for the civillian Police here.
As someone who lived in SE England through the 1990s protests, i am not so naïve as to think that the cops can leave everyone to it, and some surveillance/FIT ops are required as nasty bastards do hijack protests – and this costs money but it is a price worth paying if everyone else can protest peacefully.
Anyway, most recent troubles leading to protests and counter-protests and even “terrorist” threats originate as a consequence of stupid wars we have started in foreign countries, which can now be dealt with better within our country than trying to engage in Empire building overseas, especially with nations such as USA what slag us off behind our backs.
