  • My first post and already I’m asking for help.

I’m American with a Canadian girlfriend that recently moved to Amsterdam. I’ve partied around the USA, around Rome, IT, and a few times in and around London (Hackney) so I figured that I’d be able to find good events in Amsterdam pretty easily. I’m not much of a club guy, I prefer festivals, squat parties, warehouse parties, and intimate house parties, you know things that are a bit less above-ground. Well, my problem is that I can’t find shit in Amsterdam that isn’t at a club or big hall. I just want to find a pub that hosts local DJ nights. From that I could easily make friends and find things that are more to my liking.

So, if your Dutch or if you’ve lived in Amsterdam / Holland / Netherlands and have advice for me I’m completely open to it. Also, I try to use the site Party Flock but the language barrier is a problem for me. If you know other forums / sites that allow English and cater to parties in Amsterdam let me know.

    Peace

I’m not Dutch but trying to learn the language (ironically not because of wanting to go partying, but for some relatively mundane and boring reasons to do with such things as open source computer software and bicycles!)

Anyway I would say partyflock is a commercial dance music site (the Dutch equivalent of Home – DontStayIn) and would be unlikely to host unlicensed events or smaller events.

plus a combination of various political events in NL has caused a backlash against the drugs culture, so although the country is still relatively tolerant due to the way things run there, it might paradoxically be much easier to put on a large licensed event than a smaller one (provided you have the €€€€)

I get the impression too from historical posts on here and that whilst the free/squat parties do exist, they have been blighted by issues with regard to personal safety/violence as well as ideological conflicts between the use of a squatted building to live in, and its use simply as a party building – especially as some parts of NL are trying to outlaw squatting at the moment! There was a big fire at a squat party with some fatalities a few years back which may have caused a clampdown.

I agree that its curious there aren’t smaller pub nights with DJ’s playing underground dance music, I have tried to search on Dutch sites but not found anything. Maybe any Dutch users on here could suggest venues?

There are shitloads of (Tekno) dj’s in The Netherlands.
But there aren’t a lot of parties in Amsterdam.
Most of the parties take place in the center of the country (Rotterdam, Utrecht, Eindhoven,…)

The “scene” in The Netherlands has a website but it’s only on invitation.
Flyers are rare and most of the time you just have to check your network to get an infoline. Witch opens at 22h or later, and then you will find out you still have to travel 100km+ But it’s worth it.

Last summer it wasn’t unusual to arrive at a party after 4h in the morning.

Are infolines mostly in Dutch? I had a feeling that this could be the case – anyway if I ever go to NL I do not want to go to the big/popular venues in Amsterdam, I expect it would too crowded and commercialised like London (tourists trap) and I do not want to be amongst wannabe gangsters selling crap drugs and sex industry of often trafficked women. Got enough of that bullshit in my town. Actually I was listening to a Dutch folk song “In de stad Amsterdam” a while back and when I translated some of the lyrics I thought “wow, that is so much like Ipswich” :laugh_at:

in UK we used to end up sometimes at parties at 02:00-04:00 but that is because peopel do too much ketamine and take too long to update the party lines..

    Debris,
Thanks for the info. So, what would it take for you to hook me up with an invite? I’m not opposed to traveling a few hundred K for a party. If you can’t help me, how would I go about getting an invite for the private website, are you a member? I’m sure if you and I start a PM conversation I can make you comfortable that I’m not a risk. Hell, I’ll be back in Holland in a few weeks, I’d even be up for meeting at a pub… and I’ll buy the beer.

Anything you (or others) can do to help me get connected would be awesome.

I can recommend Cheeky Monday at Winston Kingdom on Mondays as a place to start and get connections. 🙂

Otherwise goatrance.net etc. I think you will have to start off with the more commercial ones, find the right people there and they will invite you to other parties.
