My old Macbook Pro finally ground to a complete halt today; over the past few years just about every component gradually died on it – trackpad, keyboard, screen went dim, battery swelled up and exploded, bluetooth’s shagged, shit wifi reception, hard drive buggered and refuses to back up, and no software including the OS will run on it.
Couldn’t justify (or afford) spending £1000+ on another one if it’s gonna cause me all that grief again so I’ve just got myself a PC laptop for £400.
Mac can fuck off.
1st gen Macbook Pro, think I bought it in 2005. Tbh it was never quite the same after a speaker fell on it at a party in 2006 and I had to have it repaired, but still.
TBH whilst the hardware failures are relatively normal for a well used portable computer of that age, another factor is PC multimedia has improved loads even in just 6 years and the more intense competition means that PC kit is cheap enough to devote entire machines to single tasks, for instance I keep one old laptop (with a knackered battery) on light duties simply for capturing video and controlling radio receivers, a cheap desktop to run the dual screens and audio mixing whilst another (slightly newer) one is what I use for work.
I know a fair few people with macs but they are all either hippy environmentalist types who have previously had well paid public sector jobs, or if they are techies they worked for British Telecom at the boffins research centre. All these jobs are gone now, they won’t come back, and it would not surprise me that when their macs finally stop working (though these tend to be kept in less harsh operating conditions) they will end up buying cheap Chinese PC kit like everyone else.
If cheeseweasel was making £20 000+ a year on a full time salaried job in multimedia then maybe he could justify buying another mac but I can see the issue especially with the English-language music industry declining hard due to a combination of malign USA influence and also puritanism against live music events in England.
Nah I’ve been having problems with it for years. I could only use it as a portable machine for a couple of years after I bought it due to the need to carry around the PSU, keyboard and mouse. I’ve waited until the thing literally won’t turn on anymore before replacing it as I’ve never had the money. However, I can’t live without a laptop so I’ve had to just buy one on my overdraft. That model had loads of teething problems tho tbh, serves me right for rushing out and buying a first gen product before they had time to iron out all the bugs I guess.
It’s actually more useful for me to have a PC for work purposes than a Mac as I’ve been doing loads of freelance AV stuff recently and that’s what conference delegates/venues/everyone not working in media seem to use.

when I worked in Government Service a few ageing macs were kept on for document design purposes but they were on the verge of being decommissioned and everything switching to Windoze. I’ve not seen one in private sector use for years and by the 90s even newspapers were moving to Windows – for instance the Reading Post was all Microsoft based (which is even more ironic as the Grauniad own it and they are always being accused of plugging apple products). Even people I know what could easily afford one (and they aren’t much more costly than higher end PCs) buy PC’s now since the economic depression…
my mums mbookpro is fucked as well, power cable and keyboard are completely screwed. seems overpriced to me.
2005! Thats a long time man for a computer! I was on Windows until 2 years ago, then went mac for logic. Never looked back to be fair! I know they cost a bomb but i fell in love with em. you can even boot camp windows for some programs if you really want to anyway. Saying that I wouldnt of gone mac if it wasnt for Logic!
Specifications or GTFO!
