mind you to the dismay of hippies and politically correct I still refer to much of that area as “Soviet Territory”, to me the cold war never ended, just the boundaries of some countries have changed.
it is getting media attention because they are pretty girls, whereas fuckloads of young Russians get hard prison time for this hooliganism offence for political activism of a kind where even in Britain the worst that might happen is cops would laugh at you. Those who aren’t middle class still have to do 2 years compulsory army service and ideas of dissent are beaten out of them.
This is the big problem – we (well the yanks but the EU was too frightened to do anything other than go with them) forced a free market liberal solution onto the Soviet Union at a time where under Gorbachev they could maybe have evolved into a proper social democratic nation with equal right for all but a market economy (a bit like a larger version of Norway)
What they have now is fucked – the rich are richer and powerful, religious groups have power, young people’s “liberal” groups are male dominated so as long as girls get their tits out and are submissive they are OK but if they are assertive no one cares, and they only care about protesting govt if it stops them stealing musicians/artists content.
Women actually had more rights in the last few years of the Soviet Union (due to influence from elsewhere in Northern Europe) than in “free” Russia! OK much of this was due to their work in military industrial complex but thats also how they got their rights in Europe… unfortunately increasingly I think it will be war, not small riot where they regain them and all of us will be affected by it irrespective of our ages or genders..
