Exactly, and when their Dads upgraded their car (probably to a larger but practical and economic Japanese saloon), they got passed down the family – though often this vehicle was shared between the eldest son and mum (if she drives) leading to the sort of sketches found in low budget sitcoms…
Have you seen that awful ‘sketch show’ on bbc1? I had to turn over – it was just ‘too much’ for me, and not funny
Mark seemed to think it was hilarious though…
My mates parents used to / still own the sweetshop/s round the corner from where I grew up (I used to get so annoyed at my mate Ritesh as he’d be upstairs sleeping – and I’d be out at the crack of dawn working for his dad doing a paper round!! :laugh_at: (and the only girl at that time!) and used to get this bloody dog that’d shag my leg every day for weeks!! :hopeless:) but I loved walking to school with Rita as we got loads of free sweets! and she and her sisters would dress me up in wedding sari’s with real gold thread! ! swings and roundabouts! 😉 but defo ‘fitting the stereo type!’

do you mean Citizen Khan, my mum liked it but I said “load of rubbish, accents all bloody wrong to start with (not brummie enough) and it looks about 30 years out of date” :laugh_at:

Yep!
I thought I’d watch it – As growing up most of my mates were either Asian / Iranian or Chinese, so got quite a good idea of other families cultures, but yep – shite, and as you say out of date, lasted about 10 mins….
At the very least they should have set it in somewhere like Wigan or Oldham if they are going to film it at Salford, got actors with the right accents (shouldn’t be hard to find!) and given them a more modern house, with the decor of the mid 80s to early 90s, it might have worked then 😉
getting back to vehicles I saw a large family gathering for a wedding meeting in a car park somewhere up near Marcus is from (not sure exactly where).
there were two full size buses (like sinners bus), 3 mini buses, 14 taxicabs and 5 more private saloon cars – took up a quarter of this (large) car park :laugh_at: (the large vehicles were German or other North European makes and the smaller ones Japanese)

round his way it is mainly a Muslim community,
his mum just moved house in to what she describes the ‘muslim area’ – dont think she trying to be rude – just a huge muslim community lives in that area – and you are pretty unusual to be an older white Irish lady on your own there – but she (he’ll kill me for writing this) likes saucy fiction , and she was double shocked to see ’50 shades of grey’ totally out of stock in the local library and loads of erotic fiction stocked!! ha ha !!
however back to your point its similar where I live but usually white transit van’s at weddings in the car park!! we have a huge traveler community, 2 sites just up the road from me, and one in the process
I was given a family wedding VHS, by someone to see ‘what they really like’ not just ‘big fat gypsy wedding’ ( a couple of girls from site been on it) and it was certainly an eye opener – however I couldnt get it back to its owner as they now entertaining the queen for some time :hopeless:
alternatively we have the largest Korean population outside of Korea just down the road (great supermarkets!!) so quite a mix of cultures!!
another thing I remember from the late 80s/90s was both my first driving instructor (an old Asian chap) and Asian taxicab drivers seemed to hang small bunches of bananas from the drivers mirror on a hook like this…
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Betterware-Chrome-Banana-Storage-Hook/dp/B0014QST9S
Of course thats a traffic violation today, and even in the early 90s my instructor would quickly remove these when I got in and say something about how he shouldn’t really be doing it… (the quality of instruction 20 years ago nor of taxicabs’ safety wasn’t as well regulated as today)…
I’ve never worked out why this was done and not seen it since – maybe it was a Reading/West London thing (possibly to ripen them quicker?).
