I have been to my new falt again today with the intentions of getting some work done, but I found myself stuck scrubbing bare nicotine patches from the walls, doors and windows. I can no way paint over this stuff cos I wouldn’t be able to live knowing that it is under there. The kitching has fatty burn marks all over the celling, the vents are all brown and horrid. There is a plug socket hanging from the wall too exposing bare power cables which I know is a slight health hazard. This place is gonna take me fucking ages to get in order. I really thought that the council would have had to make the flat a certain standard before moving other people in. The kitching is pretty bad too. It had a cling film holder thingy on the wall form the 80’8 and iron holder form the 60’s (I think) the kitchen needs a complete overhall man.and that is gonna cost me more money than I have got at the moment and. Obviously there are no carpets and fair enough I wouldn’t expect them to put new carpet in and I would rather buy that myself anyway. I have never had a council property before so I don’t know what sort of standard I am entitled to. I did say to the woman who showed me the flat “is any work gonna be done” and she said no but once you are in you can start to report things that you think are wrong. I assuemed from all those grimebusters shows that the council are ment to get kim and aggie in to spruce up the place first.
Any advice would be great cos this is causing me a huge amount of head pains ATM
Cheers.
I wanted a council place but the waiting list is seven years at the moment 🙁
Yeah I would rather stay in my lovely flat at the moment but it’s game over for this place. Everything is lame.
You are super lucky to get one even if its shit. If you have enough you can do an exchange.
Some people are such wankers i always clean up after i vacate a place. how can you feel ok leaving someone to clean your filth? Somw people just want to watch the world burn…

Mate you’ve got a kid, they’ve gotta house you quicker than that, even if it’s in temporary accomodation.
And log mate, will try and find out some info for ya, pretty sure they’ve gotta sort things like exposed wires before you move in man.

No I don’t need one, we private rent and get top up on wages to help pay.
But my best mate is sharing a two bed with a ninety year old with her baby and boyfriend and they told her 7 years.
40, 000 on the list in brighton.
But if you can get one, its all cushdey. House for life plus you can do exchanges.

Ah I see. Still shouldn’t take 7 years though, think they say that just to put people off. A mate of mine got one a few years ago and only took him a matter of weeks to get it, he went down there most days and was persistent in his quest. If your mate has the time to go down there, then get her to do so as often as she can, eventually they’ll relent and house her.
its a long wait if you’ve got a roof over your head.. they live with the 90 yr old doesnt matter cos they have a roof over their head, need to be homeless in a hostel.
thelog – just paint over all the crap ask a professional painter on stain sealer paints
I thought it had to be in ‘habitable’ condition – I guess cleanlyness is in the eye of the behholder – different people have different standards……
My mate took her kids round to view her new council home (this is a few years ago!) and they hadnt even cleaned the blood splattered walls where someone was murdered there!! ha!
Now that is seriously fucked up!
And another mate moved in to a council flat, (with kids) and there were dirty needles hidden in the bathroom, and when she removed the bath pannel there were all sorts behind there, had to get environ health in I think – that may have been the same girl, I cant remeber
I’ve spent tons of time helping my sis clean up places she’s moved in to – one which was a private rent had used tampons in the bedroom, and you could actually scrape the fat off with a knife in the kitchen, and I wont even begin to tell you about the shared toilet …… needless to say we spent a whole weekend with the most ammount of bleach you could have in one place outside of a bomb making cell.
I guess if youve spoken to them, and they’ve said its in ok condition, you need to just suck it up and get on with it
I assume Im still on the council house list, put my name down when I got made homeless at 18 ( family home sold by court order due to parents divorce as soon as I left full education ), Im now 36 and still not got one lol
Basically the only was you get social housing are…
1) Have a kid you cant support ( sadly why so many teenager girls get pregnant has nothing to do with wanting children or lack of contraception, and everything to do with jumping the housing list )
2) Get sick ( which of course no one does on purpose ), or pretend to be sick ( the most common one being depression )
3) Make yourself appear unemployable and throw yourself on the mercy of the system, usually means spending several months in a hostel before being given the shitiest council flat in the worst area.
As for the condition of a HA/Council flat/house, all local authorities and HA’s offer redec grants or loans to paint, carpet & get basic furniture they just dont tell you about them unless you ask, it’s a case of dont ask dont get
It took me ages to find a place to rent with housing benefit. Most homeowners wont rent out to people recieving hb. I spose cause they dont like the government know how much income they get. Its either traipse a shit load of privrate landladies/lords or go agency which require either an income of 20k+ or a guarantor…i mean how many people fit into that?
You should watch that Swansea documentary ‘Teenage Heroin Epidemic’.. Loads of blood on ceilings where people squirt the blood from their syringes onto the ceiling… nice especially when they all got Hep too…

true and its because there are folk like this that people what make it harder for all genuinely needing social housing. what is worse for everyone in that area is Brighton is not a “Green” Council area, they do not quite have a majority, its a stalemate between Tories and Greens because of the way England’s elections work (in Northern Europe it would be a Green council with just enough of a majority to get things done).
the bigger problem with the “dodgy” socket (even from the message I can tell exactly what it is and how it may have came adrift) is the rules changed so that you have to have all manner of expensive certificates to do electric work in a residential kitchen (and some other stuff) – and then retest the entire fucking lot, and fill in some paperwork too – which the council will doubtless be unwilling to pay for. In reality it is normally a 5 minute job to de-energise it, check that it definitely is off and that no serious wiring faults exist especiallly earth faults (which are what get people shocked). What is more fucked up is I am classed as competent to work on all industrial electric installations, including seriously big 400V 3 phase kit and in plant rooms etc and occasionally build small circuit breaker panels to connect UPS etc to the electric (as I am responsible for getting all manner of high tech kit working including stuff what needs 24/7 reliable power) but I don’t have the authority to do the same in my own house or help my friends, unless I spent about £3000 of my own cash doing so just for the course let alone test equipment. Though if I lived nearer log and the wiring wasn’t too far gone I’d be inclined to fix the socket anyway just to help him out…
