  • Most politicians in Malaysia (if they are not Chinese) are Malays who either practise moderate Islam or are not particularly religious, but there are still a few dinosaurs out there..

PETALING JAYA: Korean megastar Psy may be famous worldwide, but PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat has mistaken him for a female performer, urging him to cover his aurat (parts of body not allowed to be seen according to Islam).According to Sin Chew Daily, Nik Aziz made the remark when reporters asked him to comment on the fact that Barisan Nasional had invited Psy to perform at its Chinese New Year open house in Penang on Feb 11.

Hearing that Psy is a Korean singer, Nik Aziz said female artistes must “tutup aurat” when they perform.
Otherwise it would have a negative influence on youths in the audience, he was quoted as saying.
When it was pointed out that Psy was actually a man, Nik Aziz then expressed concern over the content of his songs, noting that it was important to ensure that songs were suitable for youths.
The Kelantan Mentri Besar also asked reporters “in what language does he sing?”.
When told that Psy sings in Korean, Nik Aziz said he wondered why people would want to listen to people singing songs in a language that they did not understand.
He also said it was extravagant for the organiser to invite Psy when the money could instead be used to promote local artistes.
“Don’t we have many local singers? Why don’t we hire local youths? It is a waste of money to hire foreign singers. Isn’t it better to spend the money on our youths?” he asked.

    ahahaaa, pure lol

At first I read it as Islamic politican makes Psy for woman. I thought DAMN what a politician!

I thought this thread was about me 😥

Mate, you should do your own remix and call it ‘Flatcap Style’!

Haha just burst out laughing in front of my colleagues when I read that. They asked what had tickled me so I calmly told them I’m going to do Gangnam style (Northern
    Remix)

I have no time for people that try to force their ideals or beliefs onto other people. You believe what you want but let others make their own choices based on their own ideals and beliefs.

A bit of background info: the area where they are celebrating Chinese New Year with Psy is an affluent, multicultural suburb of Malaysia with a majority Chinese population.

My late father was born there in the 1940s. If you own a laptop computer or other modern small portable gadget about 40% of the important bits inside it are probably made in and around Penang, as are “essential but boring” pieces of kit like routers, network switches, WLAN adaptors and telephone sets (analogue, DECT and VOIP).

I totally agree but its a more complex cultural situation. Penang’s local government has an odd coalition of the Chinese political parties and slightly more conservative Muslims than the mainstream political parties. I am not 100% sure how this happened but elections in Malaysia are nowadays no worse than those in any European country

When the old guard of all ethnicities keep telling their kids that being a musician or artist is completely worthless relative to being an accountant or working in the electronics factory, its not surprising there isn’t as much of a music scene in Malaysia compared to Korea. Loads of my relatives are talented musicians but its usually seen as a hobby or short term career rather than long term.

Psy isn’t that young either – nearly my age – Oppa (in the lyrics) means “bigger brother” because in Asian societies you are supposed to be everyones brother or sister, until you get to 50-60+ when you become “auntie or uncle”.

I think its not a bad thing he is performing in Malaysia as he really does represent a big change in Asian society as a whole and its influence that occured with my generation – but countries like Malaysia need to open up a bit further to “Western ideas”.

I wouldn’t say I cross dress regularly but I did put a wedding dress on a couple of new years ago when smashed and it became a thing that whenever I’m wrecked and vulnerable I end up being forced or persuaded to put this wedding dress on for other’s amusement lol.
