  • Atos told incontinent woman to ‘wear nappy’: Firm condemned by MPs for pressuring sick and disabled into returning to work – Home News – UK – The Independent

A 30 year old lady with incontinence, mental disibilites and difficulty walking and talking told she should get a job.

Thats the purpose of Atos and the whole process, to redefine disability and put people on a cheaper benefit. There are a LOT of cases like this sadly and its only just begun.

Although the article does not mention this lady suffers from PMLD.

Her sister has created a twitter page urging people to suggest jobs she could do https://mobile.twitter.com/search?q=%23JobsforMeena&src=hash

Damn right. Why aren’t people who are physically incapable of doing work getting jobs? Off to the assembly lines!

    Oh wait…

I hate everything the government do.

Bloody disableds ruining Britain!!! We need to put the Great back into Great Britain!!

I think we should give sick people the jobs of mp’s. 🙂

there was actually a govt funded organisation called Remploy specifically for getting those who had disabilities back into employment if it was possible but the funding was reduced.

it is irregular having an IT services company carrying out healthcare assesment tasks, as much so as if I were to put on a set of scrubs and do the nursing rounds at work, even though I look like one of the Pinoy staff (not surprising given my ancestry).

Lets not forget though that the UK is a democratic nation and people over the years have openly voted for “smaller government and less taxes”. This is all well and good if you are fit and healthy but doesn’t provide for much of a welfare safety net.

whilst people are getting in a big kerfuffle over a small minority presumably with little else to do celebrating the death of a retired politician (maybe this is interlinked?) they overlook the real shift towards bitter Social Darwinism in the UK.

I’ve been reading up about hate crimes etc and there are people who will openly walk up to a disabled person and their carer and say “I resent paying taxes for you, you should be put down” and then are very angry when the Police come to arrest them claiming their “free speech rights” are being infringed upon

Worse still, there are very nasty incidents of disabled people (especially with learning disabilities) being bullied and even murdered by so-called “friends” whose intention is to steal their benefits and social housing.

    yeah!

Does anyone have sources for the claim that 10 000 people who ATOS said were “fit to work” have since died?

I don’t disbelieve it but even the best case is that a large proportion of these people were genuinely terminally ill and it would be ludicrous to expect employers to take them on, it would be both expensive and traumatic for the employers to to train someone for a job only for them to drop dead a few weeks/months later (especially if their bosses and co-workers have become friends with them…) the worst case is that the stress of the process was a direct or indirect contribution to the death.

10 000 people is about 75% of the population of Stowmarket (the nearest large town to where I live).

Consider that when a road traffic collision kills 4 or 5 people there is a major investigation and steps are taken to try and prevent it, and that terrorist attacks in London killing about 60 people and in Norway killing 70 people caused a global outcry. So if British people irrespective of their political views are accepting this as collateral damage in lowering their taxes its a harsh indictment on British society as a whole (as this government was still democratically elected).

Yes, they were democratically elected but I’m shocked at the amount of people that I’ve spoken to personally (seemingly intelligent people) who voted Conservatives because they were fed up with Labour. So basically they weren’t quite feeling things were working out for them under Labour and decided to “give someone else a go” with little regard for policies or potential damage based on the individuals in control of the party. I’m no Labour boy btw, just can’t believe people vote almost out of spite.

I think its far bleaker than that, given that Labour has shifted loads to the right since the 1980s. its a bit like those folk what say “I’m not racist, but…..” – people in Britain genuinely hate seeing public resources being used towards those who are not like them especially when times are hard and vote accordingly.

I remember reading that Suffolk is high up in the list for disability hate crimes nearly as bad as metpol and essex areas. Whilst I think this area is safer and friendlier than London I still get the impression there is a real “might makes right / survival of the fittest” culture in some circles…

Just as GL said, I know of lots of ‘supported’ employment schemes for people with mental health / learning disabilities that were around 10 years ago that now don’t exist AT ALL as their funding was cut

This sort of work was a lifeline to a lot of people, gave them a sense of purpose, routine, social connections and money in their pocket, but not anymore as …. funding was cut

I did see some evidence a few weeks ago but for the life can’t remember now, will post if I can remember,
I do remember being shocked though, mainly at the rate of suicides but also examples of people being deemed fit and then dying if their medical condition,
I know a fair few GP’s trying to support their patients who’ve had cuts made to their benefits by very poorly trained atos staff, and even with medically backed knowledge it being unsuccessful…..
