Good thing, bad thing, indifferent thing. I can see one difference, newspapers charge advertisers and can hire and fire staff, can relocate, can claim tax exemptions.
So where he gets this idea from that it’s a level playing field I really couldn’t say… but then academics tend to be well insulated from cold reality.
I think it’ll be pretty interesting to see what goes up and to see if they get shut down, for “being hackers” when they are just feeding us the truth.

its interesting but not exactly revolutionary – though they are unlikely to get shut down for being hackers any more than we would here because some of our users take drugs. Oh and I once was a hacker, but a long time ago, when telephones actually had dials on them..
but it does remind me of a time in the 90s when loads of people were making alternative videos but they clearly had one eye on getting a yoof TV series commissioned by channel 4 or the regional ITV (which still existed then) and getting a “meedja career”
and the normal news is still able to fight its corner, they even have the kitteh..
