A man is in hospital with head injuries after falling from a speaker rig on to an agricultural grass cutter while at an overnight rave in Norfolk.
Police said the illegal music event started at about midnight at the Heath Plantation, in Swanton Abbott, near North Walsham.
The 18-year-old, from Downham Market, was airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.
Police said he remains in a “serious” condition. Four people were arrested.
“When you see somebody fall off a rig and hurt themselves like that and we have to get the law enforcement involved it’s quite disappointing.”Ollie Clements, who attended the rave, said: “It’s not a nice thing to see. We all come here and it’s supposed to be a community vibe.
Police had initially said about 600 people attended the rave but later revised the figure to “more than 250 people”.
A spokesman said the force was alerted to the event after people reported a large number of cars “racing around” the area.
He said officers had worked to close down the rave as soon as was safely possible.
‘Potentially tragic’Supt Carl Edwards said: “Norfolk Constabulary has a zero tolerance approach to unlicensed musical events (UMEs).
“This incident should serve as a warning to other people considering holding or attending UMEs that these events can have potentially tragic consequences.
“We warn people attending that they are dangerous places as they have little or no health and safety provision, as well as leading to damage and disruption to businesses and the local community.
The incident comes a week after a 26-year-old woman was flown to hospital following a rave near Thetford.
Police were called to a site in Croxton on 20 July where up to 300 people were partying.

this was the party i was at! Saw the matey on the rig, i turn around for a second and look up and he’s gone. Pretty nasty stuff but they were told strictly no rig monkeys. Hope he recovers though because i saw the guy and there was a lot of blood. It meant the party had to end early and just adds to the negativity that seems to float around the scene in our area. Gives the press something to moan about as well. I WISH people would just take a moment into consideration and choose NOT to climb on the rig. It will probably be seized now thanks to irresponsible people.
Dunno why people insist on climbing the rigs. I find a paintball gun usually deters them!
I guess rig suppliers could spray them in KY Jelly or other grease to make them unclimbable.
Or station people on top with giant sized inflatable mallets.
Still, people have died at these events, and probably always will. Come to think of it, everyone who has ever been born, dies at some point, so I guess it’s kind of to be expected.
Horrid, maybe they should put plastic spikes on top of rigs like they do for pigeons, or just a wooden cone/wedge on top, painted could look quite good.

The thing that annoys me is the way the media cover things happening at illegal parties or with illegal drugs involved as a bigger incident then if the same thing was to happen at a licensed event or with legal drugs, something completely non illicit.
A perfect example of this was a rave held in my local cinema I used to go to when I was younger after it had been shut down. In the news paper it said something like “hundreds of thugs full of drugs with vicious dogs descended on the Odeon terrorizing locals. One woman who we spoke to was scared to go back to her car after going into a local shop.” Now thugs might be an excusable description of a few people who were there, as there was a bit of graffiti and some smashed windows, however there were no reported dog attacks or of anyone terrorizing anyone. The whole building was totally soundproofed so the noise wasn’t “terrorizing” the locals.
I know some ravers can look unapproachable to the average non-rave exposed person, but fear of these people comes from the concerned individuals own preconceptions (most likely from news paper articles like this).
You go to a football match, and a firm kicks off with another firm. It’s known and understood that the majority of people were there just to watch the football. When it comes to things like raves or drugs though, a few idiots break some windows and every single one of the however many thousand people there automatically become thugs, and their dogs are all of a sudden a danger to society!
I mean, yeah it is dangerous and stupid climbing on a rig, and is a lot less likely to happen at a licensed event as that’s not normally possible. but people die from doing stupid things everyday, it’s just the way things are. The same guy might also like to climb up bridges and do spray painting and fall, but that’s spray paintings fault right? He also might like to climb up apple trees to get apples and eat them and fall off, but that’s the apples fault right? I mean it’d be totally different if no one was climbing on the rig and it fell onto someone … but the fact is, it wasn’t the guy’s environment that mainly caused this, it was a direct result of HIS actions, however unwitting he was.
That party in the Odeon I was talking about was amazing though …. sooo surreal sitting in the place I used to watch films, looking down at the big screen with mad trippy visuals projected on it and people dancing on the little raised stage in front of it. People in the ticket booths selling drugs lol … funny shit.

if a townie club had two incidents in a row with eastamb / anglia one deployment and healthy young people suffering potentially life changing injuries the owners would lose their license and business.
BTW everyone in the UK has a common law and civil law duty to protect those at a crowd event they organise and if they fuck up can end up both before criminal and civil court.

The London and Manchester media do to some extent and even our local papers played down the two outstanding rape cases at Latitude over previous years but otherwise our local papers treat night time and football violence equally seriously.
it is a wider problem in England, people just cannot fucking behave sensibly in groups and its not any stereotype of race or culture or physical appearance. At a Pink concert in Ipswich there were 4 arrests for violence (more than the footy!) but at Portman Road this young lad in his 20s from BT Openreach with no criminal record whatsoever just suddenly ran across the ends (in front of his own dad) and beat the living shit out of a watford supporter. His Dad had to give evidence against him in court. (I fucking hope that idiot got sacked as you cannot trust someone like that at Openreach, what would he do if a customer complained?)
its a vicious circle as the reason licenses got introduced was because promoters were ignoring safety rules especially planning against fire/incident to save costs (a old punk woman from the 80s told me this) and even back then rivals would sabotage events by causing incidents. I’ve seen a book about London Fire Brigade where they show the inside of a club what was burned out with petrol (around 1981) with loads of people inside, you can’t even recognise the skulls as the skin has melted, the fire was that hot..

this is why I no longer bother with the local events (not just being old lol). In fact I had a big plan to get Biotech, Disruption and Vega to do my 40th birthday party and could get the land and everything and even the Council and Old Bill were amazingly supportive but when I looked into the details it would mean my personal details go on public record and if one person fucks up my name would be in the news and it would also impact on my employers reputation. As I wouldn’t be making any money out of the event it would just be a hassle for no real enjoyment.

I remember you saying about that I think. Would have been a good party, but totally understand your reservations!!
