I’ve been listening to a lot of music that I believe to be “rave” music. But do they really play stuff like Nightcore, jumpstyle, Trance and the like at the raves you all have gone to? Lets talk electronic genres, and what the difference between them really are.
Thanks, I will fix this now.

Shall we ban him as he’s clearly not happy about what he posted? :laugh_at:
I think the definition of rave music is totally dependent on what you think rave music is, I deejay techno, minimal techno and tech house, this is a really old mix I made years ago:

But this is far from ‘rave’ music to me, its deep, emotional and meaning full (I know I sound like a plonker!), for me rave music, especially over here in the UK and more so in the area I live, its all the same hard trance songs from about 10-15 years ago, making it very stale in my opinion, although a handful of people, mostly the younger generation are moving away from hard trance and going to more electro techno and psytrance based stuff.
the main issue I have with raves on this side of the pond is the music, like I said, the same bloody songs, mixed in the same bloody ways as every time before the last. Alot of deejays over here don’t actually mix per-say, they just cross fade at certain points highlighting certain noises like bleeps and bloops. I’m for one, If you’ve listened to that mix, MIX they two song together until one is either about to drop or the other is in rest.
A couple of friend of mine are VERY good deejays and some have sworn never to mix some types of music, which I can understand, I mix what I wanna hear not what other do which is selfish but I don’t actually put any mixes up apart from this on ^.
Jumpstyle? I’m sure I’ve listened to it before, but can’t for the life of me recall any tracks….oh, if you like Jungle drum & bass, here’s a good friend of mine’s soundcloud….he’s so sick at mixing, it pisses me off cause he’s been at it for a fraction of the time I’ve been slaving away hahaha
yeah, heres his soundcloud, see what ya think:

The only one which isn’t a “proper” genre is nightcore (its an odd modern variant of trance/happy hardcore) but I can understand how it came about, as its made by young people who have easy access to a powerful computer but strict parents who make it difficult for them to go out to a real rave, or live in a rural or suburban area or a larger Northern European country where even if parents are liberal, travelling isn’t as easy. I noticed its popularity went through the roof in Norway immediately following a very unpleasant terrorist attack by a right wing activist on a youth summer camp; which would not be unusual if a lot of parents and young people had suddenly become genuinely frightened for their safety at these events.
Trance is in two forms these days – the faster sort (138-145 bpm) and a slower sort (125-136 bpm, which is also often called “progressive house”). These are currently then genres I listen to and mix most often.
Both often have vocals, except progressive house seems to have a darker theme to the lyrics, with themes of failed relationships, guiilt, shame and even self-harm. Many tracks contain a piano either being played mournfully or frantically. Out of curiosity I looked up the backgrounds of these producers, and wasn’t surprised to find their families were either Roman Catholic or Lutheran (Protestants who use rosaries and have convents and are near indistinguishable from Catholics) – I was raised as a Catholic by a Roman Catholic father and a Lutheran mother who both came from Malaysia. That explains the whole genre and why its equally popular in Asian countries. (house and trance music tends to get past scrutiny of all faith groups as it rarely contains lyrics with explicit sexual references, drugs or drinking hard liquor).
Jumpstyle/Hardstyle/Hard Trance (like the faster trance minus the vocals) are a sanitised version of a faster genre called Gabba and originate from the border areas of the Netherlands and Germany. They are or were to some extent mainstream pop music in those areas, since starting to learn Dutch since 2008 I’ve been intrigued as to why these genres are thought of as underground int he UK, although NL and DE are trying to distance themselves from music/hedonism and the associated drugs culture, even though it was by allowing these to coexist alongside a culture of innovation that they made so many advances in technology from the 1960s onwards…
happy hardcore *shudders in disgust*
Give me Mininal techno and tech house…but then again, I LOVE brutal metal, grindcore, black metal and the gods of progressive death metal….Opeth
Can’t beat a bit of oldskool hardcore breaks!
Techno and drum and bass were my first loves. Now I prefer a more minimal tech house vibe 🙂
Hey… Visit Welcome to Method
Don’t know where you live but it’s what my town (Scarborough) has been crying out for.
Too many retro/classics nights going on for me. Some veteran DJs playing but this festival is all about making history not reliving it.
I’ve got the babysitter booked already 🙂
where i used to live last year, rave music was mainly hardtek and psytrance, but i’ve always had a preference for minimal techno, raggatek, some tribe (yes i put a difference between tribe and hardtek) and drum and bass, but in the end rave music is found in the simplicity of perfection, whatever it means to anyone…. to me perfect rave music is music you can dance to, go bonkers on , be controlled by, and also listen to whislt sitting and smoking j on the sidelines
