This is a call to London from a large cruiser at sea – the call was “encrypted” but it was simple frequency inversion (used in WW II) that GCHQ could easily deal with anyway.
When the chap at the Post Office coastal station says “you’re through old man, go ahead please” he is actually speaking to the younger radio operator (not the middle aged posh guy) = this lad turns on the encrypt and puts the key over to switch the radio inputs and outputs (with the encrypt on) across to the booth where the posh chap is waiting at the red telephone.
(the radio operator cannot overhear the encrypted call, but when the posh guy finishes and puts the phone down he wlll see on his console the lamp for that telephone set clear down) and can then put the comms back to clear and advise the coastal station the channel is free (these channels were very busy back then).
