  • I was unfortunate enough to own a Sony Xperia J. Its the worst phone on sale in the UK, Sony themselves have admitted it was faulty when they released it, refused to refund or repair handsets, then decided to stop ALL updates and firmware support.

I have had enough of mobile phones, they’re all shite and a waste of money.

    SONY CAN GO FUCK THEMSELVES.

Remember the good ‘ol days of nokia 3310s?

more like the 5140, 3210, 704i…..I’m showing my lame as fuck knowledge of tech lol

The 3210 and 3310 are similar looking and easily confused with one another. Having used a lot of mobile kit even ETACS analogue mobiles, I found that originally Nokia and Ericsson GSM equipment was the most solid and reliable; but both companies went tits up because they ran their business models on people constantly upgrading and wanting more features, and the real reason that stuff was reliable is they still had the government run PTT in many countries and no manufacturer could sell any sort of telecoms kit until it has been approved and part of that was ensuring that it worked. Nokia and Ericsson also had a proven track record in building communications radios for the civillian and military uniformed services.

But all these companies (and Sony) were going downhill by 1999 or so, Sony would sell professional kit like a €40 000 VCR used for TV studios and that software had bugs in it, and they wouldn’t support other system integrators (who had to make equipment to control it).

TBH I find all modern smartphones to be less reliable than their predecessors; although I managed to obtain a “rugged Android phone” as I invariably end up dropping any mobile phone on the floor of the comms room at least once it does not have a great deal of memory and too many apps are memory hogs; its camera is also very basic. It also seems harder to make a telephone call with the damn thing (i rarely use SMS as I always found it fiddly) – I often end up dialling a wrong number, though it is to be fair robust and has a strong loudspeaker (as it is often used for checking that a telephone exchange works correctly); and dual SIM capability means it will work when you get network blackspots on one network.

I still prefer to use a separate device for listening to music or taking photos; these are now small enough to be portable as well as the phone and work better.

I’ve decided I’m not going to buy another phone, every one I’ve ever bought has either been a pile of shit or been faulty. Every time I’ve tried to take action against the manufacturer, I’ve been stalled by there ‘its not our problem, despite the fact we made it’ issue. I’m currently building a case file against Sony, gathering as many reports of faulty goods they’ve knowingly and willingly sold to the public, I’ve got about 90+ names and statements from people all over the world who have also tried to get some sort of help/reimbursement or just a straight forward answer from them. My mission will take a long time, possibly 2-5 years, but I’ve become SO angry with Sony, I’m putting great thought in to asking a friend of mine who works for some very very nasty people to ruin Sony UK’s image.

they’ve already wrecked their own over the last 20 years.

Although their stand alone video cameras and hi fi separates are OK (although made by what was Aiwa in Malaysia) those are tried and tested technology. So were the Ericsson mobile phones. All that exists of Sony UK is one factory in Wales when they used to have loads of others and the bulk of their European research centres were closed in 2008. The parent company is always giving out profit warnings as they have tried to charge a premium price for a product which has many promised features but does not always work as expected. Unfortunately nearly all high tech companies do this nowadays. I normally wait 1/2 years before buying any “new” technology as the first customers are always used by companies as unpaid testers. TBH as I don’t use my phone for playing computer games and very rarely listening to music (its most often used as an online dictionary for looking up words in other languages) the cheap Android phone I purchased from a supplier of electronic components seems to be no worse than the ones from big brand names.

What I do find worrying is how quickly all gadgets are made obsolete and support stopped, and there is no longer any company you can trust to consistently deliver a reliable product. Most likely due to the excessive use of freelance staff and “startups” instead of the big companies like Phillips / Sony etc and/or the PTT investing in training for young workers. It may mean things got delivered a bit slower but they were more likely to work or at least get fixed when there were problems.

I’ve just had enough of consistently being robbed by inbreds in suits or cunts in phone shops, I’ve a right mind to dust of my machete and go to town on them.

    It’s all about the 8110!

DO YOU KNOW WHO THIS IS?!

    😀

we had a few at my old work; the slide bit would give way after a while. Actually that company (which now only exists as a subsidiary of its main competitor) was notorious for buying the latest technology before it worked well, and also doing the same with its own products, that was how things were in the late 90s; we were lucky that there was the risk of the Millenium bug as although that was less of a threat in the end it meant that worldwide all high tech systems got inspected for quality control.

The 6110 (old model) and 6150 had as many useful features minus the slide bit. I think I had a 6110 on around 1998/1999, this was one of the devices I would use to send party reports into Party Vibe when it was a mailing list rather than a forum; though way slower than an analogue phone circuit (9600 bps max).

I remember that you got a better/more stable connection if you dialled the ISDN number for your ISP as the network would treat it as an ISDN TE rather than just a telephone, and they just had introduced free local call minutes so it didn’t cost too much. Even then if I could find a live telephone circuit that I could either legitimately use or not get in too much trouble borrowing it that was preferable, though you had to put clips to the line or introduce another pair of wires.

At one squat we had this mixture of hippies and these rude boy types would turn up to obtain cannabis. They were tech aware enough to know people had PC’s and computers, many had their own, but were amazed at how I could connect to the Internet like that; some said it was like things they had only seen in spy movies.

Ah the 6150, that was a nice little phone (it was the small red one iirc, or at least you could change the covers of it, but it was small).

I’m putting great thought in to buying another Nokia N97, I used to have the N97 mini, the phone even Nokia said was born bad. But the proper N97 was a fantastic phone, apart from the silly little unlock slider thing, which as a friend of mine whom worked for Nokia told me it was an after thought as they got some Belgian bloke to design it, but he forgot to put a screen lock on….so they cut a hole in side and cocked it up. BUT it falls out, and is a cunt to put back in, as its a micro clip that you need a 0.2mm slide pin to reattach it. I’ve found a beautiful example of gumtree, and the seller is a real good guy and a proper owner, looked after it and had it serviced monthly. He wants nearly £100 for it, I’m really tempted but its running Symbian 6.0 which is shite.
