He also offered to recite the creed to prove to them he was Catholic :laugh_at:
The nuns in my first Catholic junior school were considerably to the left of Thatcho’s lot and the older ones pretty much on a level with Militant (one would whisper all the names of the IRA when we had to pray for those in prison) they all supported things like anti nuclear and environment/ animal rights movements.
There was also a lot more diversity and gender equality than you would expect to find anywhere in late 1970s/early 1980s Britain, they encouraged kids to learn about Europe and its languages at a surprisingly early age and there was much emphasis on collective as individual work.
Even Protestant centre right Christian parties in Northern Europe such as the one Angela Merkel is in and the Dutch equivalents are more left wing than both the current Tories and the “New Labour” lot inasmuch as they still believe in having some kind of effective public services and infrastructure (these won’t appear out of nowhere no matter how much anyone prays and the market won’t provide them everywhere they are needed) – some Americans still view all of Europe as “socialists” because of this!
