Malaysia may seem a bit “Muslamic” but to be fair [especially following recent events] they are doing a lot to keep a lid on things and get people doing more positive stuff with their tech skills (such as making sure aircraft and their associated communications infrastructure are properly maintained).
A while back I scared off a bunch of spammers from MY as I pointed out I knew exactly what uni they all went to and the halls of residence they were in (they had used their halls broadband); it was down the road from where some of my own relatives live. I expect the spammers were quite spooked to post on a forum halfway across the world only to get “scolded by a random uncle [1] who knew something about Malaysia”
[1] in Malaysian / Singapore culture (similar to Britain in previous decades) anyone older than you are but not obviously of senior age is referred to as “uncle” or “auntie”
Very true GL, know a chap from singapore, KL in fact. He’s chinese and I remember when I 1st met him online he told me he was from China and he kept that up before, very ashamedly, tell me he was Malaysian. I had no idea why he did this until after asking why he would do that and he said it was cos of the 2 malaysians bombing a wedding some 10-12 years ago killing a large number of people. He thought the whole of Malaysia must be hated worldwide for it and people would just assume it’s a Muslim country. Was pretty shocked to hear that tbh.
If that was the Indonesia bombing that was mostly done by Al-Quaeda in Indonesia. Malaysia is no worse for extremism than many bits of the UK especially London and the North; it is slightly less progressive but if UKIP take power that is what the UK would end up like.
Singapore is now a different country (has been for a few years TBH) but it was all Malaya at one point. My Dad went to 6th form at a Catholic school in Singapore (not sure why at it was 500km from where he actually lived in Penang) right through the middle of the full on civil war; so he started 6th form in one country and finished in another!
His teachers were mostly Scottish Jesuits which is where he (and most of Malaya) gained their love of the bagpipes (Muslims like these too!) but they gave him the idea Scotland was freezing cold and snowed/rained all year round (presumably so they wouldn’t get kicked out and put back on the banana boat to Aberdeen).
They also encouraged him to collect stamps from half the world includng the mid 20th century issues of Germanic countries (I cannot scan half of this collection or I would get in trouble putting it online as some VPS I use are hosted in Germany)
That’s exactly what it was GL.
