  • Yesterday evening I was at work in a rural area (where we are stuck with BT) and couldn’t get onto .org/.com at all ; and also for a bit of today (this is a different ISP routing). I didn’t unfortunately have time to check DNS/traceroute so wasn’t sure where the issue was – whether it was server maintenance or an issue with peering between UK and USA…

The forum looks really strange on my phone.

You tried changing the default DNS gateways in your router config to say the gateways of OPENDNS or googleDNS? They can help massively with thimgs like latency as well.

Alas I was in a 60 bed nursing home wirh alll the nurses busy on two treatment rounds; in this one alll the comms systems are IP-based.

I’d already had to swap a UPS on one half of the rack and tell everyone to go into “emergency power fail mode” so it wasn’t ethical or safe to change further network settings.

There was a problem with DNS on the new box which I didn’t know about until yesterday. When we shutdown the old box yesterday which had been acting like a proxy for the new, our DNS data started to drop off the internet and everything became progressively unavailable. Unfortunately things were working fine for me here so it wasn’t until I got a report from a user in Italy that I started investigating, 3 hours in already. Unable to work out what was wrong and with the clock was ticking I changed us over to a new setup. And as soon as that went live it was just a matter of our DNS information spreading globably to get everything bad as it should be. By now it should all be good I hope though. Anyway I’m really sorry about this. And I hope no one was inconvenienced too badly.
