There are around 700 000 cyclists in this area (apparently more people cycle than drive cars); but they have to obey the traffic rules which appear to be enforced quite strictly there
The young chap got a fine of €55 for running a red light whilst listening to music on headphones + €25 for some defect on his bike (and a license point at the central traffic authority!); the other older people got €15-€25 fines for carrying unsafe items on the handlebars, not dismounting in pedestrian zones (as they are grown adults) and going the wrong way down a one way street. I didn’t realise DE cops even had debit card readers (as well as their batons and a Walther P99)
If I ever ride there I will have to be careful; especially as the Polizei have now changed to Tetra radios [designed in the UK], as folk are complaining these are cutting across the TV reception if they live near a repeater mast. In the video the cops are still using the low band VHF analogue sets (the smart Germans have added a handy buttoned flap to his cycling jacket to stop the long antenna poking him in the eye when riding) – but those old radios can be easily monitored on a scanner.
