  • in 1986 I lived in Caversham (SE England) about 50 km west of London – a friend in high school built one of these..

Initially we accidentally set it on the same frequency as the VHF communications radios of the local buses (as frequency plans were restricted info back then) – so every bus driver for about 1km around heard music through their comms speakers – we got a warning from the chaps at the BBC Receiving Station (who thought it was hilarious we had the cojones to set up a pirate station right under their noses) – they told us “if you are going to do that pick your frequencies carefully and make sure you don’t cause interference where the aircraft radios are as that will get you in more trouble.

5W might not seem like a lot but in open countryside high up can go about 10km 😉

a recently constructed one in action in NL (you can still buy the kits 30 years later – the lad who built it (only slightly older than Tryptameanie) is smart and has put a filter ahead of the endstage so it does not send any rough signals into aircraft comms frequencies (which would result in trouble from Agentschap) – he is also using a traditional Band II radio reception antenna whic doesn’t look suspicious and if directional (most are) would keep the signal within a few km range.

It seems that even today these are used by younger people to share music across a small town/village as broadband isn’t that much better than in the UK in the more rural areas and mobile data bundles for streaming not as generous as here.

If he is only transmitting sporadically the AT would be too busy with trying to find the more powerful transmitters in the rural areas to hassle him..
