Forums › Life › Computers, Gadgets & Technology › Man accidentally ‘deletes his entire company’ with one line of bad code
the original thread has been deleted from Serverfault – Italian journos tracked down the chap who now claims it was a joke post; and other sources allege it was some type of viral marketing for a data recovery company – it has even resulted in anyone on Serverfault whose name sounds a bit Italian saying they have nothing to do with any of it :laugh_at:
many modern distros either allow a setting in .bashrc to alias this dangerous command so it is harder to execute by mistake and some just reject it with an error message…
Right I remember reading about an engineer from IBM who had taken over a mainframe they had sold to a company, sold back to IBM, and now leased from IBM, securely erased the entire system, by mistake. A secure delete was intended, just not to the degree it did. Also it was reported that the back-ups did not agree with data that was newer for whatever reason. That man kept his job as the nice chaps at IBM understood it was an honest mistake I can’t seem to find the articles about it though, only links to someone deleting the cloud or some shit…..
Turns out it was a hoax.
