The purpose of this study is to explore the development and expression of identities of young adult drug users and to understand how these identities may influence their substance related decision-making (i.e. what drugs they use/ with who/ where etc…). The research is guided by a number of objectives that will seek to;
 analyse how drug use and associated lifestyles and practices feature as part of the construction of young adult identity;
 to understand whether there is a ‘drug user identity’ and to explore differences in expression between subpopulations;
 and to investigate if there are any problems/ risks associated with particular types of, or a greater affiliation with, a drug user identity or identity related behaviour.

This research forms part of my PhD programme. Interviews will be used to explore the role that drug use might play in peoples’ lives and to understand how identity might be shaped by drug use and drug use experiences. The interviews will remain confidential and any identifying information will be removed during transcription.

I am looking for individuals who are comfortable talking about their drug use and the researchers neither condone nor disapprove of drug use and take a neutral stance on all matters.
