  • Was reading an article about a large drugs bust in the same region (café owner busted with 1800 xtc-pills, 1 kilo cocaine, firearms and stolen goods!) but also noticed this as well.

Some equipment in a big substation (the incoming electricity can be as strong as 150 000 V or 50 000V; it gets transformed to 10 000V) has gone badly wrong; electricity networks engineers went to inspect it but found the whole building was full with smoke.

That usually means the cooling oil in the trafo has overheated; the smoke is often highly toxic so the Fire Brigade must decontaminate the area first before any further work can be carried out. The electricity company advise it will be 01:00 CEST before they can start restoring power.

9 trams are stopped in the street (also causing a traffic jam) many people are tweeting they are stuck in lifts (at least KPN and T-Mobile have put accus in their mobile base stations!) – the Fire Brigade are also freeing these people. I was surprised they did not call 112 rather than tweeting but I suppose that also means their friends and family know what has happened…

25.000 huishoudens zonder stroom door flinke storing – AT5: de nieuwszender van Amsterdam en omgeving

the tweet in this article is from someone who is (somewhat randomly) raising chickens inside his house but he is prepared and has got a butagas heater in case they get cold :laugh_at:

they got the power back on everywhere around 08:00 CET this morning; and had half of the trams running again for the morning rush hour (up to the bit where there was still no electricity).

Anyone who was off supply for over 4 hours gets refunded at least €35 of their electricity bill ( I think this is some EU recommendation although in UK it is usually 12 or 24 hours before anyone gets refunds!) According to the news this is automatically worked out (in England you have to fill in a claim form yourself) the power companies there likely have more smart meters (not just in houses but also in the transformer stations) so they know which areas were off supply and exactly for how long (they have to also file a big report to the local and national government explaining what happened and what steps they are taking to prevent it happening again).

Also drugs will be back on sale shortly.

TBH I doubt if that trade was disrupted at all – the mobile phone networks kept going and in every coffeshop/café/bar there are going to be folk who have instinctively put their LED bicycle lights in their pockets (otherwise they might get nicked out on the bike stands) so folk could still see to count Euros and small packages even with the rest of the town in darkness…
