  • Carbona (carbon tetrachloride) really was nasty shit (even if it was also a useful industrial solvent) and should have been restricted in the 1970s. Attacks the liver, suspected carcinogen and also destroys the ozone layer. and if you light up a cigarette when its vapour is around it turns into highly toxic phosgene (which some people learned the hard way, as these halogenated solvents were once favoured over benzine, naptha etc because they didn’t catch fire so easily).

For most uses it got replaced by 1-1-1 tricholorethane (which does have some narcotic effect if inhaled), that was still available as Tippex thinner (or as bulk solvent) well into the 1980s, though I think its restricted now because of the risk of ozone layer damage.

So what solvents would you recommend sniffing these days GL? :lol_big:

strangely enough I’ve literally just this moment been cleaning the remains of a sticky label from a small plastic bottle using some stuff caled “Pro-Power Degreaser”. It doesn’t say exactly whats in it but “contains hydrocarbons, C7-C8, n-alkanes, isoalkanes, cyclics” – which probably means all the various isomers of C7-C8 (there are a lot, illiesse might know more about them), plus warnings in most of Europes languages ” do not breathe in the fumes, can cause drowsiness and dizinesss”- and was thinking “its almost as good as the old stuff” :laugh_at:

(TBH 1980s era halogenated solvents would be less useful here as they would likely dissolve the plastic as well..)

We sniffed rubber cement all the time in middle school. It had some weird solvents in it. This is ~2000, but still long enough ago that you could get high.

The article mentions MDA as far back as 1968? And that it was used as a cough suppressant, wtf? And as an anti-depressant which makes sense!

    Hahahahaha, you didn’t know?

Lots of things were cough suppressants ad such back in the day my man.

there used to be more xylene in it, nowadays it is more just C7-C8 (heptane and octane). Anything higher in carbon atoms would start becoming too oily and lower would evaporate too quickly/go up on fire (and is also more valuable as petrol/gasoline). Xylene is still available here as paint thinners but bloody expensive these days compared to a few years ago..

I used to have this 1950s era British medical book (the NHS had only just started up) where two suggested cough suppresants were diamorphine and mercury (II) cyanide (!).

I supposed if the patient is stone dead then they aren’t coughing any more :laugh_at:

the proper Benzedrine inhalers were sold OTC in England well into the 1960s. During one interview with a journalist, the Goons (comedians Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe) were all constantly snorting from these inhalers because “they had the cringe” and conducting the entire interview in silly voices :laugh_at: (if you’ve ever listened to the Goon Show recordings this will also explain the context)

There’s apparently a picture of the Beatles all with vicks inhalers in their mouths smiling like fools floating around as well.

until very recently propylhexedrine inhalers could be purchased in UK (the stuff is not restricted) but the prices very quickly went up to stupid amounts post PSA and then disappeared altogether (I didn’t buy any – extracting the chemical is fiddly, they weren’t particularly cheap due to USA shipping costs), the quality of the high has mixed reports and involves ingesting an unpleasant mix of citrus juice and menthol).

This also suggests MHRA (which are now monitoring NPS very closely for Public Health England) have “had words” with the folk importing the stuff (the companies doing so have legit business opportunities. You can still openly buy many industrial solvents that are not on EU environment protection control lists (they do have many legitimate uses especially artists).
