TBH I’ve never seen one of these outside of a USA movie still showing a “college party” scene, not even in the increasingly Americanised UK supermarket at the top of my road (ASDA==British Walmart).
Then again in UK and Europe the legal age for drinking alcohol is 18 so there is much less need for young adults to hide what they are drinking, and no shame in drinking out of a bottle or can if there is not any other suitable glassware available… (it has been rare since late 1970s to see kegs of beer being served at British parties as the poor quality of it made the UK an international laughing stock).
It is now possible to get polypins and other bulk supplies of good real ale for your party, but implies the folk attending it are going to be mature enough to use proper drinking vessels :laugh_at:

They’re used for drinking games like flip-cup and beer pong that are endemic of college parties in America in addition to hiding the contents of the cup, you’re right about them being American, but there’s a bit more nuance to it.

One of these bad boys:

TBH I was equally surprised that they hadn’t crossed the pond, given that in my town we have high school proms and for the last 20 years young adults in SE and East England all try to behave like they are in the cast of “Friends” (albeit with more chemical hedonism involved) :laugh_at:
I think its cause in the U.K. there is no “Greek Life” which are the origin of a lot of the party culture involving solo cups in the USA, for example at one of the universities that I went to, the environmental students had a “save the solo” campaign to encourage people to recycle them.
thats true – although fraternities/student organisations do exist in some areas of Europe (NL and DE stil have a few) they are becoming less common or popular nowadays and increasingly have an outdated reputation due to bad behaviour of some of their members.
In the UK todays uni students tend to socialise in smaller groups and due to higher fees, more pressure to succeed and students increasingly living at the family homes during their courses tend to party a lot less than other young people of the same age groups (such as those already in full time employment); and if they live in halls of residence these places increasingly have strong restrictions on visitors, partying etc – they and the college buildings are often CCTV monitored and you need an electronic passkey to get anywhere in them.
Our local University only had its Student Union bar (it is is like a specialised version of a British pub combined with a European café) built about 5 years after the place opened!
Similar changes have occured in America, the first college (small place) I went to, actually had an on campus bar in the 1980’s. Hell would freeze over before that happens now. Our dorm suite was a cross between a trap house and party central, I’ll leave it at that, I don’t know what the statue of limitations are.
As far as greek life, its strong at most large traditionally structured schools, and the further south you go in America the bigger it is. That is a link to an actual frat party in Florida. There are exceptions to this, such as commuter schools and liberal arts colleges, but at a lot of places it seems ~20% are in greek life. It is kind of obnoxious as far as it goes, but you can go from having a 3.0 GPA in American Studies to a job on Wall Street thanks to Fraternity connections, so even if the Animal House lifestyle and incestutious dating circles with various Sororities isn’t your thing, there are some benefits such as having a large social circle and more kids in Greek life graduate that those who aren’t, probably because the organization has to have a mean GPA to stay eligible with the school. Lots of Brothers that I met were genuinely good people on all accords but different fraternaties have different vibes or cultures and some of them can be total dicks, but it varies from school to school, the artsy frat at one school might be the pre business/law kids at another school.
We have co-ed frats that mirror what goes on in the UK as far as student organizations
