  • Probably not the best place to put this so if a mod wants to move it thanks and sorry for causing the extra work.

A really obscure forgotten audio format: ?Talking rubber? | Ars Technica UK

TBH I’ve been putting most of my posts about radio communications and sound engineering here as .com doesn’t get as much traffic and I’ve still not quite worked out how to post on the new forum or even find the subforums that were used for these subjects.

I think the British Post Office did briefly import and rebrand a few of these devices but not only would be rubber tape be noisier, it would eventually stretch and the speed of playback/recording would be incorrect (this was always a big problem with tape recording especially at low speeds). BT eventually rebadged various Japanese telephone answering machines using cassette tapes (some had an endless loop tape for the outgoing message).

Before digital sampling was invented (and this got used in telecoms sooner than music production as the audio quality only needs to be 8 bit 8000 kilobits/second) Deutsche Bundespost used magnetic disks for announcements that were regularly repeated but had to be periodiclaly updated.

This video is for a service where you could dial a number and find out what was on at the cinema..

Well after that severe beatdown to Dr B and his shoddy work I don’t know what to say GL. I always thoughty you were a man that could rise above it all, yet here you are, and in plainer words than your own, Dr B has buggered it up for everyone……….

Well you’re entitled to your own opinion GL, even if personaly I find it distateful and very very wrong, on this occaision 😉

to be fair .com is still useful for music and events promotions and WordPress is good software – there was also a big problem with viral marketing SEO spammers there from Poland which we do not get on .org (probably because their Communications Ministry has blocked the site for use by youngsters or PAYG mobiles like most of UK has).

A few years back I had to also intergrate a WP blog with a forum for an environment group in my town and ran into similar limitations and TBH couldn’t even achieve half of what Dr B has managed to do.

Its not Dr B’s fault at all but the trend to dumb everything down online inspired by Farcebook etc making many new forums a nightmare to use for any posts over a few words and with embedded media.

I know it’s not Dr Bs fault, just thought I might construe your previous comments as being bitchy and getting you into trouble. Seems my pan was not effective lol.
