Alcohol
all over the news at the moment is that we are a nation of piss heads about to die from chronic organ failure at each others great expense
i see some silly sights in the high street on the weekend and that, but i don't think it is anything different to past generations
i even had a kidney and liver function test a couple months ago as i was in a lot of pain and i started to get the fear that perhaps my lifestyle was about to deny my children a father... a fear fuleed by the media (ag!) but came up fine (turned out to be a spine problem in my lower back, the treatment for which the NHS won't fund)
is alcohol the latest moral panic? they got the smokers, now they are coming for the drinkers
many towns and cities are blighted by theme-pub-booze-markets... is the good, old, british, community pub an imminently endangered species?
should i never drink 4 or 5 pints in a night, even if it means that i stop myself from going mad by doing so?
should we all become intensely-observed puritans with 'nothing to hide' (and nothing to laugh about)?
is this the price of prosperity?
too many questions... i need a beer!

Smoking in general
i've been e-mailing the government (not personaily) but signing petitions about legalizing cannabis/allowing personal use if you grow it yourself and etc...........
but i was thinkin about it the other day, that every tim ewe get a reply back from Mr Brown he always says the same thing..........''cannabis causes chronic illnesses, its bad for you're health, any type of smoking is bad for you're health'
so heres my question to all of you, if cannabis can't be legalised for it's 'bad health' why is tobacco being sold when it literally kills people?

Smoking Ban II (repost?)
Like it or not it looks like it works...
"The number of people being taken to hospital with heart attacks in Scotland has fallen significantly since the smoking ban was introduced, the most detailed study into the impact of the measure has revealed. Researchers found a 17% drop in the number of people admitted for heart attacks in the year since the ban came into force, compared with an average 3% reduction a year over the previous decade. The reduction was most marked among non-smokers, with a 20% fall, compared with a 14% drop among smokers".

UK : East : 200 alcoholics costing Suffolk £4 million in benefits..
From todays local rag:
its worrying, as if this is how little responsibility/self-control people treat a legal drug with, what hope do we have for more liberal solutions?
Quote:
MORE than 200 Suffolk alcoholics are today claiming benefits totalling millions of pounds a year because they are unable to work.
In a sobering snapshot of today's drinking culture it is estimated claims for people who can not work due to their booze addiction could total as much as £4 million a year in allowances.
Quote:
“The age of people presenting (symptoms) to doctors is getting younger. There's nothing to suggest to us that changing at the moment.

Smoking ban
Does anyone else think it's possible that the smoking ban could encourage pissed off "clubbers" to enter into the free party scene?
With a lack of rules and restrictions at free parties maybe disaffected clubbers (and I'm not talking about your average Friday night "Ritzy's" type - more the sort who attend legal hard dance nights) could be looking for somewhere else to hear underground music, party, have a good time and dare I say it generally get off their faces.
Maybe an influx of new people into free party culture could be the best thing to happen to this scene in a while.....

Hi Party Vibe,
I'm a junior reporter from The Sunday Times Newspaper.
I'm writing an article on how the smoking ban has encouraged the
underground club scene. Effectively the smoking ban has been really
good for squat parties and free parties. Have you found that there has
been a surge in the amount of people attending squat parties?
Can you put me in touch with some free party promoters who have comments
about this topic?
Their identities will be 100% protected as we have a duty to protect our
sources. I am a regular free party-goer and I have noticed slightly
different crowds at events. Please can you help me???
Thank you.

UK : LDN : Man shot and killed in smoking ban row
When I heard about the ban I suspected there might be an increase in trouble, but thought I was being too cynical to think that it would escalate to the point of firearms being used. The worst that might happen might be the odd ruckus between punters and door staff - and then I read this :hopeless:
Quote:
Boxer shot in smoking row dies
Former British heavyweight boxer James Oyebola has died after being kept on a life-support machine since being shot in the head after a row at a bar.
Mr Oyebola, 47, was shot at the back of Chateau 6 in Fulham Road, south-west London, in the early hours of Monday, after asking customers to stop smoking.
Police said he died at 1239 BST after his life-support was switched off. Family and friends were at his bedside.
Police say the shooting is now a murder inquiry and have called for witnesses.
Det Ch Insp Scott Wilson said: "This is now a murder inquiry and we need the people who were in the club that night to come forward as they may have information that could help us piece together what happened last Sunday night.
"James's family are devastated. I would urge anyone with information to come forward to police and assist us in bringing those responsible for murdering James to justice."
Officers from Operation Trident, which deals with gun violence within the black community, have searched three addresses in the Wandsworth area in connection with the shooting.
Three suspects
Doctors had declared Mr Oyebola brain dead on Thursday.
Police said he was shot after asking three men to stop smoking in a covered courtyard area at the back of the bar, on the Fulham Road.
Police believe three black suspects, aged between 19 and 25, ran from the club in separate directions.
Mr Oyebola, who was born in Nigeria, won 18 of his 23 fights and was a bronze medallist at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh.
He won the WBC international heavyweight title in 1993 and retired in 1996.

UK : East : The effect of alcohol/drugs binge culture on the local Ambulance service
Although the bulk of this report is about alcohol, the paramedic also touches on the effects of drugs.
These days I've noticed loads of people (particularly in East Anglia) combine binge-drinking as well as pills and other drugs (have to admit I've done it myself), and sadly it does seem to be the NHS who picks up the pieces..
WHAT cost our booze culture? Today we launch a new series investigating the effect alcohol is having on our society. It's perceived as a harmless legal drug which enhances bonhomie and helps shed inhibitions. COLIN ADWENT looks at its spiralling impact on our ambulance service.
JASON Gillingham is used to dealing with the human wreckage whose senses have virtually been obliterated by drink.
Already at full stretch, he and his fellow paramedics are frighteningly aware of the short-term impact as well as the long-term health time-bomb generated
by alcohol.

Alcohol warnings on drinks
LONDON (Reuters) - Labels on all alcoholic drinks are to carry health warnings by the end of next year, the government announced on Monday.
Under an agreement between the government and the drinks industry, the new labels will include details on how many alcoholic units each drink contains and the recommended safe drinking levels for men and women.
Binge drinking, consuming 10 or more units in one session for men and seven or more for women, is a major public health concern. More than 7.1 million people are hazardous or harmful drinkers, according to official figures.
:laugh_at: Now I am looking forward to seeing these labels on my pint in the pub:crazy_diz

UK : SW : Alcohol/E/painkillers binge kills young woman
This is a worrying one, as she clearly wasn't an "addict" in the traditional sense, nor a suicide, especially with the increasing use of pharms such as benzodiazepines and codeine to "come down" after a weekend, this could easily be a weekend's worth for some people!
Drink and drugs mix killed woman
A young mother died after a day-long binge of drink and drugs.
An inquest heard how Sarah Cronin, 22, drank eight pints of lager, three shots of strong spirits, took ecstasy tablets and a large quantity of painkillers.
The mother-of-one from Kingswood, South Gloucestershire, was found slumped on the landing of her home.
Recording a verdict of death by misadventure, Coroner Anthony Woodburn said he was satisfied that Ms Cronin had not intended to kill herself.
"If she had taken these tablets she may not have realised that taking them with alcohol may have caused her harm," Mr Woodburn said.
The inquest at Bristol was told the former barmaid had spent the afternoon of 2 October 2006 drinking lager with friends in the Jolly Sailor pub in Hanham, Bristol.
She had left the pub briefly to pick up her three-year-old daughter but then returned to continue drinking until she left at about 2100 GMT.
She was seen later that evening drinking at another pub in the area before going to the home of her boyfriend, Steven Butcher.
Mr Butcher refused to let her in due to an earlier row, but later followed her to her home where the pair spent the night together.
He told the court he woke up at about 0400 GMT to find Ms Cronin unconscious on the landing.
She had fallen unconscious and suffered a cardiac arrest and paramedics were unable to revive her.
Pathologist Dr Hugh White said the toxic level of drugs combined with the large amount of alcohol had lead to Ms Cronin's death.
"If you take drugs like this combined with the alcohol you effectively doze off," he said.
