Anti-smoking in legals?
Well watching the news this afternoon on good old Channel4 i have watch a topic about the new anti-Smoking rules!
Did you know that in Scotland alone the sales of drink and peole using public houses, clubs have dropped as much as 46% in customers not using public venues and the sale of Drinks has also been reduced by another 26%, But the Food scene in restaurants has gone up quite alot and has risen by 26%!
So what are you opinions on the anti-smoking that WILL take place next year! On one point i am worried because im a Promoter and of course this will hit my events pretty hard, Ok alot of people are saying things will drop to start off with but will pick right back up again after people get used to it. On a bonus for myself im a smoker who does find it very hard to give up and its alot harder when im booked to play for events because i see so many people smoking and jiust get the taste for it, so djing does not really help me give up smoking even if i have not had a fag during the week and as soon as i go out or play out and have a drink or two inside me then of i go again!
So whats your opinions on this matter?

Alcohol next in line to be nanny stated?
Quote:
Doctors have called for a sharp rise in alcohol prices after a report said 28,000 victims of drink-related violence are treated in A&E each year. Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems (SHAAP) also called for a stop to supermarket drinks promotions.
Looks like that nanny state style clampdown is spreading.....you can see why though:
Quote:
It said this meant about 77 people a day were being treated in hospitals for alcohol-related assaults.
Most of the cases of verbal or physical attacks on A&E staff were also blamed on drink.
The full report is here
and check this related article too
I am becoming suspicious that the goverment in this country would like us to return to the era of WWII - diet restricted by what they allow, ID cards and all kinds of civil liberty restricting measures....
Mind you given the irresponsibility of some of the individuals out there you can see their concern, although I think that insisting on personal responsibility is the cheaper solution longterm than more social controls....
Any views guys?

Alcohol abuse – effects on others [not the drinker]
I started to write this in another thread but decided to move it here as it would have been a thread hijack :groucho:
I find alcohol very hard to handle in a day to day scenario as it stirs up very unpleasant memories of life at home before I realised my dad was an alcoholic [my family pretended nothing was wrong or unusual about the amount he drank until quite recently :you_crazy] :hopeless:
All it takes is to see someone having a half bottle of wine a day for several days to set off the bad memories and I start to feel uncomfortable. If the drinker becomes morose and grouchy so much the worse. If they start to have a go at me or anyone else around them they are someone I will very likely scratch off my friends list.
I do not understand why people feel they have to get drunk to say what they mean to others - if you say stuff when you are sober you are likely to be more in control of what you say and how you say it. To my mind this is good - to have to lower your inhibitions just to say what you think tells me that an individual is repressed and likely a well of simmering resentments and related anger. Learn to say what you mean without the dutch courage of alcohol - you will feel better for it as a person and not get carried away and say nasty shit to others because you are feeling mean and nasty [as a result of being drunk]
Generally one thing getting said will lead to another and another and an avalanche of buried resentments starts and the wipeout which results may not be to anybodies taste at the end of the day:hopeless: [More so if the drunk then claims the next day to (conveniently to my mind) not remember what was said and therefore cant understand why the other person is being glacial to their overtures] Be sure, if you are the drunk we could be discussing [if the cap fits wear it :groucho:], that what was said will be carved in a sober person's memory especially if it was hurtful and not blurred in recall by the alcohol. I have many such memories of things said to me in alcohol which are vivid to this day :hopeless: I now know they were not true but they still cause/d me pain and heartache and have created a distance between me and my father [which is unbridgeable as there is no longer any trust on my side of the relationship this having been systematically destroyed by his drunken outbursts].
I still struggle with the tendency among my friends' friends to drink to excess and do it often - me I cant see the attraction it has for them. There are better ways of having fun out there for me than alcohol and I will not tolerate attempts to shell out emotional, mental or physical abuse to me or others around me which are committed in alcohol.
Having said all of this, alcohol is one of the most easily available drugs around and lots of people have trouble with it. You can buy it easily and it is up to you to work out how much is enough for you - only you can do it and do anything about it.
I can tell you I dont like you when you have been drinking but it is up to you what you do about it. {this is where I came in in the other thread:wink:} If you decide drinking is more important to you than my friendship thats up to you; if I value you as a friend I may try again but I will not stick around if you decide you dont want to change. If you choose to carry on drinking then I will exercise my right to choose too and will walk away from you as I am not prepared to watch another person become stuck inside the bottle with the warped views and self indulgent whining this eventually brings with it after a few years.:hopeless:
I dont mind people who drink to moderation and within sensible limits - I have a fair few friends who do this and they have been my friends for years and the alcohol hasnt been an issue for me with them :weee::weee::weee: They have restored my faith in people being able to handle their alcohol :love::love:

Alcohol and under twenties
Quote:
Alcohol Dangers
Alcohol is a drug that has the immediate effect of altering mood. Even though drinking makes people feel relaxed, happy and even euphoric, alcohol is a depressant. It switches off the part of the brain that controls judgement, leading to loss of inhibitions.
The more alcohol consumed, the greater the effect - speech becomes slurred, vision blurred, balance is lost and movements are clumsy.
People under the influence risk having accidents because of this.
Alcohol has been linked to a wide range of illnesses - an increased risk certain cancers, including mouth cancer, high blood pressure, gastrointestinal complications, such as gastritis, ulcers, and liver disease.
Excessive alcohol consumption can also have detrimental social and psychological consequences. People can lose their jobs and loved ones.
Alcohol is implicated in up to 40,000 deaths per year in England and Wales, and is directly responsible for 5,000 deaths.
Why can it be particularly risky for children and adolescents to drink?
The brain goes through big changes and growth during childhood and adolescence, and alcohol can seriously damage long- and short-term growth processes.
Damage from alcohol at this time can be long-term and irreversible. Experts believe short-term or moderate drinking impairs learning and memory far more in youth than adults.
Also, children need only drink much less than adults to suffer the same negative effects.

Alcohol and E
Before i tried E, i thought alcohol was gods gift. I loved gettin drunk coz id carelessly dance.. find random things funny and wont be so self conseious... plus id be happy. But ever since id tried E i cannot stand gettin drunk. If i get drunk i get so depressed and angry, plus im so self consious, stuck in the mirror constantly unhappy with how i look. Not to forget i just fall asleep. I dont really understand why its made alcohol so depressin. My other friends who do E still have the same effects with Alcohol as they used to but i really dont. Plus ive heard that one draw back from E is that you can get attacks of depression or get moody when your not on them? but im the total opposite. I used to be a quite morbid bastered before i done E, but ever since, even when im not on it im so happy all the time, ive got so much confidence and making friends is so easy. To me E's been the best ultimate long term prozac for me. Just wonderin if anyone out there feels the same? as everyone i know gets depressed and has mood swings now since they've been on it

Cartoon characters banned from smoking…
This just shows how powerful the whingers lobby are these days!
Its not even just Ofcom being killjoys - as TV companies have less money to take risks; if the regulators ignore the whinge on a commercial channel, the complainers often video the material and adverts and then start product boycotts on the advertisers!
Incidentally I've never seen much positive imagery of smoking in kids' cartoons.
Usually it was the bad characters who lit up; and often they would end up with an exploding cigar or find themselves smoking in a room full of explosives, red cans marked "GAS" etc; with predictable results.
Hardly the sort of thing to encourage brats to spark up a quick cig...

More cartoon classics smoked out

Turner Broadcasting is extending its mission to edit smoking scenes out of classic Hanna Barbera cartoons to more than 1,700 episodes of shows including Scooby Doo, The Jetsons and The Flintstones. The editing process is being voluntarily extended by Turner to all Hanna Barbera cartoons, following an initial complaint to Ofcom that two episodes of Tom and Jerry which featured smoking scenes were inappropriate for a show aimed at children.
Turner, which airs the shows in the UK on children's channel Boomerang, said it had decided to work its way through all 162 episodes of Tom and Jerry and has removed smoking scenes from three shows.
The painstaking process requires the frame-by-frame "painting out" of any images of cigarettes or smoking - and there are 25 frames a second in a cartoon.
In a statement, the company said: "Turner recognises that it is not suitable for cartoons aimed at children to portray smoking in a cool context and has additionally pledged to review the entire Hanna Barbera catalogue to remove scenes that appear to glamorise or encourage smoking."
The original complaint to Ofcom, the broadcasting regulator, was about two separate Tom and Jerry cartoons - Texas Tom and Tennis Chumps.
In Texas Tom, Tom tries to impress a female cat by making a roll-up cigarette, lighting and smoking it with just one hand, while Tennis Chumps sees Tom's opponent in a match smoking a large cigar.
Ofcom's broadcast code states that smoking must not feature in programmes made primarily for children unless there is strong editorial justification; and it must not be condoned, encouraged or glamorised before the watershed.
The regulator said it recognised the cartoons were made from the 40s through to the 60s, when smoking was considered more acceptable.
Ofcom also noted that in Tom and Jerry, smoking usually appears "in a stylised manner and is frequently not condoned".
The regulator welcomed Turner's "precautionary approach" and review of the archive material.
However, the regulator said in future it would look at all such cases individually and that "the level of editorial justification required for the inclusion of smoking in such cartoons is necessarily high".

What do you think should be done about this?
alcohol news:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/5262138.stm?ls
does anyone have any suggestions as to what they could do to tackle this problem more effectively? what would make you drink more responsibly if you binge drink?
on the table currently are proposals to make alcohol something you can only purchase on a dedicated aisle in the supermarket [ie you buy it separately from your food]
and they are about to spend a huge amount of money on a new advertising campaign

more anti-smoking product spam for the ashtray…
A statistics that need to reminds everybody:
Smoking has been linked directly to sexual dysfunction in men, and it's believed to have a similar effect in women. One noted urologist, speaking on the news program 60 Minutes, said when he sees a man smoking, he wonders when -- not if -- he will experience erectile dysfunction.
Smoking causes a fatty build-up in the blood vessels. These fatty deposits result in narrowing and blockage of the blood vessels. If the blood supply in blood vessels that lead to the brain are blocked, the surrounding brain cells will die resulting in a stroke.
The moment you light up your cigarette, thousands of poisonous chemicals in the cigarette smoke enter your body and get absorbed into the bloodstream. Some of them damage the lining of the blood vessels by making the blood vessel walls sticky and hence causing them to collect tiny fatty deposits that float in the bloodstream. The more you smoke, the more the deposits build up.
Similar adverse effects take place when the blood vessels leading to our heart are blocked by fatty deposits. This cuts off the blood supply to the heart muscles. As a result, the tissue in that area will die and hence, a heart attack occurs
Even if you smoke a few cigarettes a day, you are destroying the natural defences of millions of your lung cells. Quitting smoking is the only way to stop the damage.

Safest Prevention of Smoking
Hello! We know that:
Smoking is a dangerous and self-destructive habit. Various poisons contained within tobacco smoke cause or contribute to cancer of the mouth and lungs, heart problems, emphysema, gum disease and a variety of other physical diseases.
Cigarette smoking is the most preventable cause of premature death in the United States . Thatâs important! Want evidence of the dangers of smoking?
Consider these statistics:
A smokerâs risk of heart attack is more than twice that of nonsmokers. Cigarette smoking is the biggest risk factor for sudden cardiac death -- smokers are looking at two to four times the risk of nonsmokers. Studies have shown that cigarette smoking is also an important risk factor for stroke. The evidence also indicates that chronic exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (secondhand smoke, passive smoking) may increase the risk of heart disease.
Most smokers sincerely want to quit. They know cigarettes threaten their health, set a bad example for their children, annoy their acquaintances and cost an inordinate amount of money.
Nobody can force a smoker to quit. It's something each person has to decide for himself., Sometimes the cigarette is used as a tranquilizer.. Once a smoker understands his own smoking behavior, he will be able to cope more successfully and select the best quitting approaches for himself and the type of life-style he leads.
Quitting is hard, but don't give up!
Quitsmoking Now! For better Life,,!!!
