Making Ecstasy Authorities say a secret underground lab buried in a mountainside near Allentown, PA was capable of producing million-tablet batches of the illegal club drug Ecstasy. Attorney General Mike Fisher displayed photographs of the sophisticated bunker yesterday at a news conference in Allentown, about 25 miles from the hillside where it was discovered.
The lab had become a major source of the hallucinogen on the East Coast before it was raided this month, Fisher said.
Prosecutors said a Bangor engineer, Duane Michael Policelli, built the lab inside two giant metal tanks, buried beneath a long driveway leading to a hillside home that he dubbed "The Citadel."
Concealed beneath boulders and behind a hidden door, the lab had electricity and plumbing, a press for making pills, automated machinery, and sinks where raw materials were converted into drugs, state narcotics agents said.
"We believe he was supplying up and down the East Coast," Fisher spokesman Kevin Harley said. "If he needed to fill an order for a million pills or tablets, we believe that, based on the amount of chemicals found and the equipment he had, he could easily fill that order."
Policelli, 51, was arrested Dec. 12. Investigators said he had been making the drug for at least two years.
Reached at his Easton office yesterday, Policelli's lawyer, Brian Monahan, declined to speak about the case. He has previously said that his client, who is free on $100,000 bail, regretted any embarrassment he caused his family.
Authorities said Policelli had been storing chemicals for processing into Ecstasy at a defunct garment factory in Roseto. Last year, Policelli applied for a zoning variance, seeking permission to use the plant to make fruit drinks.
Ecstasy got its start in urban dance clubs and raves in the 1990s but has since spread to middle America. Once almost exclusively imported from Europe, the pills are increasingly being made in clandestine labs throughout the United States, drug enforcement agents said.
Police raided a lab near San Diego in October 2001 that they said was capable of making between 1 million and 1.5 million tabs of Ecstasy a month. At the time, authorities called it one of the largest labs ever found in the United States.
Agents shut down a lab in Connecticut earlier this year that they said had been producing Ecstasy pills stamped with the logos of this year's Super Bowl teams, the New England Patriots and St. Louis Rams.
Other alleged Ecstasy labs have been busted during the last two years in Louisiana, North Carolina, Virginia and Michigan.
Ecstasy is the street name for 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine, a synthetic stimulant and hallucinogen.

Have You Tried MDMA? When i first started to take pills a few years ago, half of one was more than enough. It kept me rolling for hours. But now I need at least 5 pills to actually feel anything from them. When partying or so, I usually take around 10 pills a night. And the buzz isn't like it used to be.
That warm, loveing feeling I had about everyone like I used to have on pills in the past, just isn't the same anymore. Pills now just pep me up for dancing, keep me awake and makes it easier to have a conversation with someone. But its really not the feeling pills used to give me, when only taking 1 or two. I couldn't even walk straight, lol.
I have a few friends that just started to take e too, after taking e for their 3rd time they both toke 6 pills and everything seemed normal. On my third time it almost seemed impossible to take 6. One made me fly high enough as it was, if you know what I mean.
So I guess that I must have started to built up a tolerance over the years, but I also think (and I think this is the biggest factor) the quality of pills is really shit these days.
Just thinking that i used to pay £7 to £10 a pill! Now they only cost £2, sometimes £3 a pill. That has to mean something.
Now I think pills are just a waste of money for me. I would like to try out MDMA crystals, a friend told me the buzz is even better than e from a few years ago. The problem is, I have never seen anyone use MDMA powder before.
Do you snort it? Eat it? Or maybe mix it in a drink? And how much would you need to take to have a nice clear buzz?

Drugs monitor issues warning for dangerous Superman ‘ecstasy’ pills The Dutch Trimbos drug addiction clinic has issued a warning about a dangerous type of ecstasy pill currently in circulation in the Netherlands. The warning comes just weeks after several tourists died in Amsterdam after taking heroin they believed to be cocaine.
The Trimbos institute says the dangerous pills are pink and feature the Superman logo. They contain a very high dose of a chemical known as PMMA, rather than MDMA which is the main component of ecstasy.

PMMA is slow to have an effect, and this has led to users taking more pills because they think the first ones don’t work, the Trimbos institute said. The side effects of too much PMMA include a racing heart and very high body temperature. An overdose can be fatal. Dutch media reported on at least two PMMA related deaths in the Netherlands in 2013.12

What is Ecstasy? Ecstasy
aka E, Pills, XTC, X or Extasy.
So what is Ecstasy?
Ebeneezer Goode!
If you sit down and talk to some of the sad old gits who are still out and about in the dance 'scene' you won't have to wait too long to find one or two harking back to the heady days of the (second) summer of love, Balearic beat, Madchester, whistle possees, M25 parties, Castle Morton and doves...the rush of interest in new music, new vibes, new values and new drugs. Ah, heady days. This was the sound that we'd all been waiting for. Top one, nice one. Ecstasy that was actually pretty much full of MDMA, and a buzz that seemed to go on for years.
Things move on, as is the nature of things...and somehow ecstasy use has remained popular, gaining popularity with each new generation of party people. For many Europeans, it's the power of E (or mitsi's, or whatever's about right now) that's been driving 'dance' (in its many forms) into the clubs, onto the streets, and into the houses of happy smiling people who just want to be having it. Large.
Most people who use ecstasy just seem to take it for granted that the pill(s) they've bought will contain a variety of chemicals. For the purists, ecstasy should only contain 3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine, (MDMA). If it really has to be pressed into a pill then I guess bulking and binding agents are allowed. Most pills contain other drugs too - similar chemicals like MDA or MDEA, amphetamine (speed), ketamine (an anesthetic used in veterinary surgery) or even LSD (acid). Some pills contain no MDMA at all. Some people manage to purchase pills containing no psychoactive ingredients at all. Of course this has nothing to do with ecstasy, and everything to do with the illegal market in which they're dabbling. It's all part of the deal.
...a sunny "hello!"
Active doses fall in the 80mg - 150mg range. Above this dose the experience becomes very 'speedy'. In Phenethylamines I Have Known And Loved (PiHKAL), Alexander Shulgin provides some wonderful qualitative comments about his experience using 120mg of pure MDMA. He finishes..."I am complete". Lots of people using e describe feelings of universal connection, closeness, excitation, euphoria and a rush of energy. People feel dis-inhibited, talkative, and keen to talk about personal things in a way that seems deep and significant to them.
MDMA encourages people to feel closer to the people they are with.
If you're using e with a few close friends (or just one special one) in a relatively quiet environment at home the experience will be markedly different to what you can expect to experience in a hot, noisy, crowded club full of people who are also off their faces. Horses for courses, as they say. I'm sure someone, somewhere, still says that.
The effects usually start within about half an hour. Sometimes an inexperienced user can feel a bit confused or anxious. High doses, or chemicals other than MDMA, can also cause some of these unwanted effects. High doses can initially cause a lack of co-ordination and dizziness. If this happens, it’s a good idea to sit down until the rush passes.
Ecstasy has both stimulant and hallucinogenic qualities. Some pills cause a distortion of sound and vision. These distortions are caused by pills that contain chemicals with more potent hallucinogenic properties, including drugs like LSD or ketamine.
The effects usually last for four to six hours, peaking after about two hours. If someone takes a pill that lasts for longer than this then it probably contains amphetamine (speed). They’d feel ‘up’ and have loads of energy, but wouldn't’t feel the closeness associated with MDMA.
Taking a 40mg dose about one and a half hours after taking a 120mg dose will extend the effects of the e for about an hour without increasing the physical side effects (eye twitching and teeth clenching) significantly. Bear in mind of course that unless you know the purity and potency of the pills that are available, it will be difficult to estimate dosages.
Twitching eyes and a world-class gurn?
What else does it do?
Ecstasy is a stimulant drug. Some of the physical effects of ecstasy include dilated pupils, dry mouth and throat, increased heart rate and blood pressure, jaw tension, increased sweating and loss of appetite.
MDMA interferes with the body’s temperature regulating mechanism, so body temperature can increase to potentially damaging levels. It also encourages the body to increase production of a hormone called ADH (anti diuretic hormone) which prevents your body from excreting urine. You don’t pee as much as you would normally.
A lot of researchers are wondering what the long term effects of ecstasy are. Some research suggests brain damage and liver damage. Other research discounts this. It’s difficult to provide clear information when different pills contain different chemicals. The truth is, no-one knows for sure whether using e is harmful in the long term. Aside from physical health risks, there is also an increasing body of evidence suggesting harm to psychological health for some users.
Me want stay on planet, have lossa good time, no?
Let's just assume, for the sake of argument, that you've decided to use e and you've managed to find a source of quality MDMA. It's difficult to talk about the risks of all the chemicals it might be, and MDMA does have a few risks all of its own. Big risks with ecstasy are overheating and dehydrating. Ecstasy is often used at clubs or parties where people are dancing and getting hot and sweaty. Someone using e in this kind of environment needs to drink about a pint of liquid over the course of each hour to replace the fluid they are losing through sweating. You should drink water, fruit juices or 'sports' drinks. Avoid alcohol, not only does it also dehydrate, it will bring you down from the e. Eating salty snacks (or drinking those 'sports' or 'isotonic' drinks) will replace the minerals that are also lost when you sweat.
Ecstasy prevents people from going to the toilet (to pee) as much as they might do normally. If someone isn’t sweating they don’t need to take as much fluid on board; drinking a lot could actually be very dangerous. Water isn't an antidote to ecstasy, it's an antidote to dehydration. If you're not sweating, you don't need to replace fluids.
Drinking too much water can cause the brain to swell, leading to collapse, coma or even death. .
The after effects of ecstasy use can include insomnia, anxiety, irritability and paranoia. The range and severity of after effects depends on the amount of ecstasy that is being used, and how often it's used. Sleeping and eating will aid recovery. Essential nutrients, particularly vitamin C and calcium, will need to be replaced. If you take vitamin and mineral supplements before taking ecstasy your body will have time to absorb the nutrients, and recover more quickly. Your body should be able to tolerate up to 3g of Vitamin C in one dose, although obviously if you have any kind of stomach complaint you should seek proper medical advice before taking large doses of citric acid. Don't forget to rest properly, too.
If you’ve been taking e every weekend and are starting to find that the days in between are becoming unbearable it’s time to take a break. Some people have developed short term mental disorders like anxiety, depression, low self esteem and paranoia after using e regularly. If this sounds like you, or a friend, then you'll be pleased to know that these people's moods generally lift once they stop using for a while. It needn’t be forever. The same applies if you find yourself needing more pills to get the effect you want. Once you’re taking more than two pills in an evening the effects are more like speed. And it's not a race, you know.
If you’re going to use e, it’s safer to use small amounts occasionally with a long enough gap between uses to enable your body to recover.
Taking large does of e, using it regularly or not acting on the risks we do know about is more likely to lead to damage to your health.
It's worth bearing in mind that e will have a significantly adverse impact on your ability to identify anything that doesn't sound like a good idea. It can dramatically affect your ability to make rational decisions. It will severely limit your ability to feel inhibited about very much at all. Be careful what you agree to...I know of at least one poor soul who proposed marriage in a state of ecstatic union, and repented at leisure. Precipitated by a particularly fine evening at the Ministry of Sound, London, UK. If you're reading this, sweetie, this is your cue to say "bastard!"
You have the right to party.
In the UK ecstasy use is illegal. The chemical MDMA is controlled by the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 as a Class A, Schedule 1 drug.
Other Class A drugs include heroin, LSD and cocaine.12…9596

The secret life of ECSTASY The secret life of ECSTASY
You may have seen a new anti-ecstasy billboard sporting myriad ecstasy pills and the caption 'which onE is the killer?' Well it may have something to do with the country you're in, not the pill itself.
Scare tactics are no good if clubs can lose their licence for allowing official pill testing and harm reduction is seen as 'giving in to the drugs war'
In the UK there have been around 80 deaths attributed to Ecstasy. In the same period, there were between 20-30 deaths in the Netherlands - but even the Dutch aren't sure if that many deaths were due to Ecstasy itself.
As the Trimbos Institute (Netherlands Institute of Addiction) say, 'the exact number of deaths related to the use of amphetamines and ecstasy is unclear. In the Cause of Death statistics of the CBS these substances rarely occur as underlying causes of death. Over the past 10 years no more than 1 to 3 acute deaths per year were involved.' In plain English, they are saying that so few people have problems with Ecstasy that they're not sure if it's a killer in itself.
So why do far fewer people die in the Netherlands from Ecstasy use? It may be due to the Dutch policy of harm reduction for all drugs. In the case of Ecstasy, it means 'ecstacy' pill testing in clubs as well as public warning from their health ministry when potentially lethal 'ecstasy' pills are discovered in circulation.
So does Ecstasy have the potential to kill? Ask the scientists and they will tell you that the LD50 (lethal dose that killed 50% of a group of rats/mice) of MDMA is 97mg/kg, ie. a person weighing 170kg would have to take around 150 Ecstasy pills or more before death occurred. However this is taken from the animal world and if you read the small print, you will see that the doses were administered IP, that is, injected into the membrane that holds the major organs together.
In the human world, there is anecdotal evidence that large amounts of Ecstasy can be consumed orally with no apparent long term effects. There are several instances of people consuming hundreds of pills and living to tell the tale.
So why is Ecstasy thought of as being such a big killer in the UK? There are three possible reasons, which relate to poor provision of resources for drug takers in clubs.
First of all, many clubs still do not have proper ventilation, running cold water and 'chill out' areas to prevent heatstroke, a major cause of death for Ecstasy users in the UK.
Secondly, the 'Barry Legg Act' effectively means that a club that allows Ecstasy testing can have its license taken away - the police can use Ecstasy testing as 'proof' of drug taking and have a venue shut down for good. This means a greater chance of consuming non-MDMA substances like DOB, DXM and PMA which really can be lethal.
Thirdly, the UK Government do not follow Dutch practice and publicise the discovery of lethal 'ecstasy' pills - the National Poisons Unit will test pills and pass data onto people like the police, but Joe Public is kept in the dark. Luckily, it's legal to own an Ecstasy Testing Kit in the UK.
Used correctly, MDMA doesn't necessarily have to be a killer at all - certainly in comparison with tobacco and alcohol, which kill many hundreds of thousands every year. More research into safety is needed.

Contaminated Ecstasy Batch – Merseyside UK [h=1]Contaminated ecstasy batch may have killed up to five people as two arrested[/h]
[h=2]A contaminated batch of ecstasy could be responsible for the deaths of up to five young people as police warn more people could die if the pills continue to circulate.[/h]
Two "apparently fit young men" from the same town in Wigan died this week after taking drugs.
A third man, a 26-year-old, died in Liverpool on Sunday and is believed to have taken tablets – possibly ecstasy – before he collapsed. Greater Manchester Police are not currently linking his death to the two in their region, but said they could not discount a connection.
The tragedy follows two suspected drug deaths in Derbyshire before Christmas. Police believe brightly coloured heart-shaped tablets containing PMA – a far stronger and more toxic drug than Ecstasy – could have been responsible for a number of deaths of recreational drug users in the county.
PMA is known as Pink Ecstasy, Dr Death or Pink McDonald.
The warning comes as two men, aged 33 and 34, were arrested by Great Manchester Police investigating the deaths in Wigan. They are being questioned on suspicion of being concerned in supplying a controlled drug.

Drug question for Sex workers. Question to providers who offer pharmacologically enhanced services, using drugs to increase you drive and reduce inhibitions. Clients pay more when a provider is an uninhibited nymphomaniac, but how do you keep yourself safe? How do you keep your clients safe? If you're a drug to make yourself out of control, surely you have arranged a safety plan. Do agencies provide this kind of support? How do clients recognize, approach and communicate with providers who offer these services? Thanks so much.
Drug testing for amphetamines Amphetamines describe the category, or drug class, that includes both amphetamine and methamphetamine. While the US Department of Transportation (DOT) and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) requirements include MDMA under the group “amphetamines,” laboratory testing typically requires a separate, specific test. Amphetamines are central nervous system stimulants that cause a reaction of increased energy and alertness and then exhaustion as the effects wear off. Excessive and long-term use can produce physical effects such as disorientation, severe depression, paranoia, hallucinations, increased blood pressure and fatigue.
Amphetamine and methamphetamine may be mistaken as the same drug, but they are not. Below is some information specific to each unique drug.
Amphetamine is a stimulant and an appetite suppressant that stimulates the central nervous system by increasing the release of certain chemicals (“neurotransmitters”) in the brain. It is a Schedule II drug that can be prescribed for the treatment of narcolepsy and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Physical symptoms can include restlessness, tremors, rapid breathing, confusion, panic and seizures. Because of the potential for abuse and addiction, physicians prefer using other treatment methods. Common trade names of amphetamine-containing drugs are Adderall®, Dexedrine® and Vyvanse®.
Methamphetamine, sometimes called meth, crystal, crank and ice, is an extremely addictive stimulant drug. It can be taken orally, smoked, snorted, or dissolved in water or alcohol and injected. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, even small amounts of methamphetamine can cause increased physical activity, decreased appetite, increased respiration, rapid heart rate, irregular heartbeat and increased blood pressure. Repeated methamphetamine use may lead to anxiety, insomnia, weight loss, skin sores, severe dental problems (referred to as “meth mouth”) and addiction. While often thought of as only an illicit drug made in clandestine laboratories, methamphetamine is also available by prescription for limited medical uses (treatment of obesity and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) under the trade name of Desoyxn®.
Employers can screen applicants and employees to help to deter drug use and keep their workplaces drug-free.
The way MDMA affects me has changed! Over the last 2-3 years I have noticed that MDMA has had a much different effect on me compared to previous experiences. Before this time It have me all of the normal effects, and was great!
I realise that the euphoric effect can lessen after many doses, however more recently whenever I take it (even a small dose), instead of being loved up and full of energy, I become tripped out, thinking that I'm places where I am not, talking to people in a really confusing way, and walking away from friends totally forgetting that I'm with them.
Most recently, on a dance floor, instead of dancing and enjoying the music, I was stood on there hardly moving, talking absolute gibberish (more than your average late night party banter), and people asking me and my girlfriend if I was okay. I also forget massive portions of the night a lot of the time when I have taken it in this 2-3 year time frame.
This confusing and not fun effect is frustrating because MDMA was one of my favourite drugs. I would love to know why this is happening, if its happened to anyone else, and if there's anything I can do to be able to enjoyably take it again. I am 26 now and have been taking it since I was 18, my alcohol consumption on nights out has increased over the years which may have contributed to this different effect. I have also done a lot of it in the past, and some very high doses, perhaps because of this my brain now reacts differently to it.
It really doesn't take much before i'm totally not with it! On new years eve I fell asleep after doing a line of MDMA.
Any help or insight would be really really appreciated! Bear in mind the goal is to be able to enjoyably take it!
UK/EU : MDMA – watch your doses! Some advice in case there are still teenagers and young adults who use forums for info rather than todays dumbed down social networks.... or if you know any teenagers who might benefit from it feel free to print out this and show ti to them.
In the last few days I've read yet more reports of what appear to be accidental ODs across the UK as well as NL, to the point I am losing count of which case is which.
There have been a few fatalities; more common is groups of friends end up in hospital and then getting quizzed by Police when they have recovered; which can fuck up long term friendships between young people and their extended families even if everyone recovers and no one ends up in prison.
A common factor is the casualties are teenagers of "year 12/13 / sixth form" age (for those outside England thats biological age 16-19) - or young adults from age 18-25. Are they being more reckless than in the late 80s/early 90s when I was that age? No.
By 1991 MDMA pills were available; but they were priced at £10-£20 each - this was a lot of money considering that a pack of 20 cigarettes was less than £2, or the same amount would buy you enough cannabis to share between 3-5 friends or more booze than you would want to actually drink (but sometimes did anyway because you were young).
However the best pills were about the same strength as todays "superpills" you only needed to take one for a whole night (such as an event starting at 23:00 and finishing 06:00) and even then half was often very strong; you felt that if you had taken the whole pill at once it would have been too much.
Todays pills are much cheaper per unit (complete reverse to the price of cigarettes but does mirror alcohol prices to some extent) but equally strong as those I encountered especially from 1991 to 1992 (and there were sadly some casualties back then, one of them in particular I still miss to this day....)
Those of us who drink will know by experience that sometimes "less is more" especially when it comes to actually enjoying yourselves, recovery times, staying out of dangerous situations.
MDMA is often safer than alcohol when responsibly used; but "less is more" applies to this stuff just as equally - also in the same way if you don't cane a entire bottle of vodka / gin / scotch you can keep the rest for later, pills and powders don't "go bad" even if stored for months. Although make sure you stash those where they won't get you in trouble or risk any other human or animal accidentally ingesting them or coming to harm...
This is how some of us survived the 1980s-2000s raaa12…45
BE : warning that xtc pills twice as strong as they were 10 years ago The article below is from the Belgian Drugs early warning system. It confirms (without excessive scaremongering too) that the MDMA pills are twice as strong as those of 10 years ago (in 2006/7 there was actually a rise in pill quality in Europe) and warns against both excessive use and combination of alcohol, also pointing out quite correctly that comedowns and medium term health issues can get way worse overdoing it (rather than simply the risk of just dropping dead)

NL : Trimbos warn dangers of MDMA use are being understated Dutch harmreduction organisation Trmbos have published a report derived from research at first aid stations of EDM events, as well as collecting hospital admission/treatment data.
Their findings are that as well as a rise in fatal ODs [although slightly less than in the UK] a lot more people are having unwanted side effects and having to seek some type of medical help - but as drugs use remains a taboo and shameful subject in spite of NL's perceived "liberal" attitudes, those who survive tend not to say much about their experiences - thus MDMA is incorrectly still viewed as a completely "harmless" drug and more risks taken with it (in spite of increasing strength of pills!)

One risk factor of these strong pils is that intelligent young adults with education or career responsibilities who do *not* regularly take drugs because of can easily be caught out if they think strengths are the same as when they were in the last few years of high school... This unfortunate case is being reported all across Europe and is going to be bad publicity for the Student Union venue which was already under Police investigation..

UK : SW : Yet *more* OD's (some fatal) from strong MDMA pills A teenager has died and some young adults taken to hospital in serious condition after taking MDMA in the SW of England.
Although cops are unable to give full information yet (there need to be more forensic tests) these incident patterns match others where stronger MDMA pills have been on sale.
If you take MDMA in the UK and Europe, whether you are a young/new user or have taken it for some time; treat all new pills as if they were 4 times stronger than those you might previously have used or have been told about by older friends.
Take only a quarter of each pill; and wait as long as 2 hours before taking any more.
This could be the difference between a fun time and/or ending up in the hospital!

UK : LDN (N) : Young graduate jumps in front of train after MDMA use I usually try and filter out blatant scare stories but this is genuinely worrying.
The young man was very intelligent; had already successfully completed one University degree and his field of study (pharmacology!) suggests he would be far from naive about the risks and rewards of drug use.
The worst part of this is he wasn't having any family conflict about his drug use, he hadn't been nicked for it, it clearly hadn't affected his academic or career progress, there is no mention of previous mental health problems...
However I can still remember how when I first took good MDMA in 1991 I had horrendous mood swings - they weren't quite enough to make me seriously consider any form of self harm (I'd already been through a bad patch in life some years previously and if anything MDMA had given me something to live for) so I can understand if comedowns from todays high doses really could be enough to push a young person over the edge like this. I have seen people go from loved up to near psychotic on pill comedowns myself a few years ago and they were not taking bunk pills either, it was good MDMA in them...
