UK : East : Multicultural festival held in Felixstowe Felixstowe has always been multicultural by necessity, it is a coastal town! So is Ipswich. It does however make sense to have these in late spring/early summer, as weather by the North Sea is such that everyone from Asia and other "hot" countries goes into hibernation until then as its too bloody cold to go out! (if you cycle along Norwich Road Ipswich the year round you can see this...)
The Anglo Chinese Cultural Exchange are good people. They gave ICR-FM a load of furniture last week, though I had to explain to the station manager (who is about 1.8m tall) that of course the office chairs they donated would not be correct size for him as they are made for shorter folk (I am 1.65m tall and had to set the chair to the "tall" position).
Office chairs in EU are made to different sizes and for different weights of people, it is actually the law employers must provide correct size for the users. For those who weigh in at above 100 kg a special stronger lift cylinder is required. When I worked in public service, such a chair was known by the facilities department as a type "foxtrot bravo" :laugh_at:)
People in Felixstowe celebrated the resort’s cultural diversity with three packed hours of entertainment, food and fun.
It was the first time the culture fair had been held outdoors and in the town centre and the warm spring sunshine brought out plenty of people to enjoy the event.
Organisers took over The Canopy and The Triangle in Hamilton Road with around 25 stalls plus live performances of dance and music, including majorettes and Bollywood.
The Anglo Chinese Cultural Exchange also gave a tai chi demonstration
There were also cultural cuisine demonstrations and food tasting with chefs from a variety of countries taking part, and a range of children’s activities.
Organisers were delighted with the support for the event, which was returning this spring after missing a year, and said the aim would be to involve even more groups next time.

Struggling to get heard and published? This might help a bit. It won't get you published but it might help you adjust to the idea of NOT getting published.Journal of Universal Rejection

You may claim to have submitted to the most prestigious journal (judged by acceptance rate).
The JofUR is one-of-a-kind. Merely submitting work to it may be considered a badge of honor.
You retain complete rights to your work, and are free to resubmit to other journals even before our review process is complete.
Decisions are often (though not always) rendered within hours of submission.
Do you want a piece of ass? BBC News - SAS man Nigel Ely hopes for Saddam Hussein statue deal
Quote:
Exactly 10 years after the statue of Saddam Hussein was toppled in Baghdad's main square, a former SAS soldier still hopes to raise money through selling a piece of the figure.
Scenes of jubilation as the towering statue was pulled down were shown around the world on 9 April, 2003, and symbolised the end of Saddam's 24-year reign.
Crowds severed the head of the fallen effigy, while around the capital other statues and pictures of the former leader were torn down.
Nigel Ely, 53, a former paratrooper who served in the 1990-91 Gulf War, was in Baghdad's Firdous Square, the day after the incident where the statue was "surrounded by tanks".
...
Working as a photojournalist, he introduced himself as an ex-soldier to US marines guarding the relic and asked if he could take a piece of it.
"They said 'Yea, buddy" and I hacked off a piece with the help of the US marines," he said.
Using a sledgehammer and chisel, Mr Ely worked through the thick bronze, ending up with a 2ft (0.6m) chunk of statue depicting the ex-leader's buttock.
It's worth a bit as scrap, but I can't help thinking there's a few well heeled people who would like to mount it. :)
Or posssibly gift it to Iran as a goodwill gesture.
21st century Gypsies [h=1]21st century Gypsies: Stunning pictures show how new-age travellers are now adopting traditional horse-drawn caravans[/h]
They were the inner-city youth who, fuelled by punk spirit, anarchist philosophy and a hate of Margaret Thatcher, clambered aboard a fleet of battered old vehicles to shun the trappings of the modern world for a life of nomadic freedom.
And while today's new-age travellers appears to have taken the philosophy even further, preferring to use traditional horse-drawn caravans instead of gas-guzzling vans, they also appear to be embracing the modern technology like mobile phones, laptops and even Facebook.
During the late 1980s and 1990s stories about the travellers were commonplace - illegal raves, clashes with the police, drug busts and fury at the criminal justice act.

Many new-age travellers, including the Delany family (pictured) have ditched their battered old vans and adopted traditional horse drawn caravans, and have been captured in these stunning photos in a new book The New Gypsies, by Iain McKell, published by Prestel Publishing
Photographer Iain McKell took his first pictures of new-age travellers 25 years ago. His amazing pictures, including Corina and Anarchy Rose (left) and Dave (right) chart how the movement has changed
Middle-class youngsters, to the utter horror of their well-to-do parents, flocked to swell their ranks enchanted by the romantic lifestyle, lack of rules and wandering ways.
Their rag tag convoys roamed the land from festival to festival, illegal site to illegal site, often to the irritation of landowners and local law-enforcement.
And while little has been written about the New Age travellers in the past decade, the movement has far from fizzled out.
Photographer Iain McKell, who has followed a small group of travellers for over 10 years, has published a stunning new photo book called 'The New Gypsies', published by Prestel Publishing, charting the changes in their life-style.
Taking the traditional gypsy lifestyle as their template many have now ditched their motor vehicles in favour of horse drawn caravans.
Back to the future: Taking the traditional gypsy lifestyle as their template many new age travellers have ditched their motor vehicles in favour of horse drawn caravans
Throughout the 1990s the new-age travellers were associated with illegal raves, drugs and clashes with the police. But many appear to have curbed their reckless ways.
Ebony, left, was photographed in Fernhill Farm
Mr McKell told anothermag.com: 'It began in 1986 with the New Age motor vehicle travellers called The Peace Convoy and then when I returned to Stonehenge Summer Solstice in 2001.
'To my surprise I found this new renegade tribe that had evolved to horse-drawn wagon but had all the modern technology as well – solar power, mobiles phones, laptop computers and off course facebook.
'I loved this idea of the old and the new working well together and the open road.
Fashion and social documentary photographer, Iain McKell took his first pictures of New Age Travellers 25 years and has been amazed at how the movement has evolved. Pictured here is Beanie.
Wandering ways: Looking like something out of a history book this traditional Gypsy caravan is now home to a proud new-age traveller called Bryony
Family ties: The travellers, including the Drury family, pictured, are a close-knit group and although many appear determined to shun the trappings of modern life they have kept up with modern technology using Facebook, mobile phone and the internet
People from all walks of life were attracted to the romantic lifestyle of the travellers from poor inner city youth to the sons and daughters of the rich and famous. The travellers here were photographed near Stonehenge at the time of the Winter Solstice
'This is a personal journey with new age modern travellers. The point being they have no history of Gypsy that’s what makes them interesting to me. That they have chosen to live by the road with horses keeping the tradition alive of really travelling and not staying in one place.
'They come from our culture so they are like us rather than the traditional travellers who are from different blood.'
The photographer, who is better known for his work in the fashion world, developed close relationships with many travellers including parents, children, couples and loners.
The New Gypsies by Iain McKell, with essays by Val Williams and Ezmeralda Sanger is published by Prestel and out now.

Changing with the times: Like the gypsies of old, travellers are now preferring to use horse-power rather than petrol. Seen here is Mermaid on Hazel's horse Pepper
A new-age couple sprawl out in the back of their ancient coach called the Peace Convoy in another of photgrapher Iain's stunning pictures
One of photographer Iain McKell's earlier pictures shows a top hat wearing traveller looking like someone out of a Dickens novel in front of an assortment of battered vehicles called the Peace Convoy. Many travellers have now adopted horse-drawn caravans
Raggle taggle gypsies: Nigel and Angie share a battered old makeshift tent deep in the English countryside
Photographer Iain McKell (left) has tracked and befriended a small tribe of New Gypsies for over ten years and his collection of pictures is available in his book The New Gypsies, which is published by Prestel Publishing
Beautiful – Marina Abramovic and Ulay Marina Abramovic and Ulay started an intense love story in the 70s, performing art out of the van they lived in. When they felt the relationship had run its course, they decided to walk the Great Wall of China, each from one end, meeting for one last big hug in the middle and never seeing each other again.
At her 2010 MoMa retrospective Marina performed ‘The Artist Is Present’ as part of the show, where she shared a minute of silence with each stranger who sat in front of her. Ulay arrived without her knowing and this is what happened.

Proper Care of Face Paints and Make Up Whether thrilling the crowds with face painting skills or changing your own face into your beloved clown character, proper care and storage is as important as buying quality, professional products to work with. Purchasing professional, name brand products helps ensure the best results in your work. Brands like Mehron, Graftoban, Wolfe, Ben Nye and Snazaroo are among the leaders in both face paint and supplies.
NEVER use poster paints when face painting, non-toxic does not mean it's safe to use on skin.
Keep it clean. A clean work space and supplies not only keeps your face paint and make up looking great, it also helps prevent the spreading of germs. The latter is more of a factor while face painting. Frequently changing your rinse water will help keep your paints and brushes clean which in turn makes the colors stay bright.
Have hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes in your kit to keep your work area tidy. If a customer has a dirty face, hand them a wipe to clean up before painting them. Occasionally wipe the paints down also keeps things germ free and helps paints colors from getting muddy.
After your gig, clean the paints as well as your brushes. Using a make up brush cleanser is a good idea, this will help the brushes stay clean and last longer.
A final word on the neatness factor; it just plain looks more professional and appealing to your clients to have a well kept work area.
Many of the same rules apply when caring for your clown make up; keep your brushes and make up clean and they will last much longer.
When powdering your clown make up, make sure to cover the make up containers to prevent loose powder from falling in, this prevents your make up from drying out prematurely.
Storage
Store your supplies in a cool, dry place. Face paints and clown make up are not good in excessive heat. I recommend investing in carrying cases for your paints and make up, this helps form miss placing items and it is easier to see when you need to reorder materials.
UK : LDN : One pig. Not sure if this should have gone in Culture, Music or food - it is all of them. His discussion with the veggies/vegans (and German ones too it would seem) is worth a read too
A local dilemma is that our community farm has 4 pigs (if they haven't eaten the last lot already, must check). Which would surely make a fair few drums - but my mates in the drumming circle are mostly vegans :laugh_at:
