UK : East : Englishman cycles 34 miles (56km) from London rather than wait for train. Chapeau!
Even more impressive is that he is a few years older than myself and riding a small wheel push bike (an ingenious British design; we are not always allowed to take full size bicycles on to the metro trains)

UK : East : Only in Britain would the lass win a stage of the race (which everyone in the county had been bigging up as raising the profile of cycling in Britain) ; and then manage to crash hard whilst celebrating and end up in the Ambulance...

NL : Why there are so many bicycles in the Netherlands I've read various articles about this in both English and Dutch; most of which appear to be aimed at existing pro-cycling advocates or University professors (of course there are plenty who are both) but this recent one explains in English how it came about. It wasn't just a coincidence or because Dutch people are completely different culturally to folk elsewhere in Northern Europe. They have the same amount of space and the same weather as the UK, Denmark and Germany. Although the article does centre around Amsterdam; Groningen (which has even more cyclists!) is mentioned too...

E-bike fault Hoping GL can help shed some light on this, as IIRC he has an e-bike and I'm sure he knows how it works.
I've been given an e-bike to repair for a mate and I'm trying to diagnose what's wrong with it. He's not been very clear on what's the matter with it, but from what I gather:
- It's not charging properly
- After a couple of miles of (supposedly) full charge it cuts out when I turn the throttle up. Power is cut and is only restored after disconnecting/reconnecting the battery
- It randomly decided to start riding itself around his warehouse one night (I'm ignoring this for now - I think water probably got in somewhere, or the bike is haunted)
The crude battery meter on the throttle control suggests it's fully charged - 3/3 LEDs lit up
I suspect it's either one or more duff cells in the battery pack, or the battery management system (BMS) is goosed. Since the battery and BMS are contained in a box made entirely from gaffa tape and thin plastic, and things are a little damp inside, I think I'm in the right area.
I thought I'd fixed the fault earlier, when I found that one particular solder pad on the BMS was touching a slightly moist piece of cardboard, causing it not to charge. I put a blob of hot glue on it and the bike seemed to charge fine, and I was able to take it out for a test ride. It went fine for a couple of miles, then cut out as I was climbing a hill. I had to pedal back in the end, as it kept cutting out every time I turned the throttle.
I've charged the battery again, and the battery is now measuring 54V, which is weird as it's a 48V battery. Apparently it's normal for the charger itself to supply this kind of voltage, but I wouldn't expect the battery itself to be that high.
Any ideas? My gut feeling is the BMS needs replacing, and if that's the case it's possible that some of the cells are knackered too.
For you GL With all the bike riding you do, Im sure you have been in some dangerous situations a few time.
This looks wicked if it works

Scotsman on bicycle eludes a lion in 1898 Africa I had seen an advert for Raleigh bicycles of that era showing a cartoon (probably non-PC for today) of a grinning black dude proudly standing by his bicycle with a puffed out lion resting in the background (having given up the chase), the idea being that the natives would buy these British bicycles.
It turns out that such an incident did actually happen, but it was a Scotsman who out-pedalled the lion, and even then he nearly got eaten..
Wearied by the slope, Mr Robertson dismounted and began pushing his bike instead. That's when he heard it. A powerful creature pounding its way through the undergrowth nearby.
"I thought it was some big game, possibly an eland or buffalo," he later told the British Central Africa Gazette, "but as I felt a certain amount of uneasiness I went to the other side of the road, and pushed away as quickly as I could."
A few yards further along, he took a glance behind. There, in the moonlit road, was a fully-grown lion. "I almost had a fit when I saw it," he said, his Victorian stiff upper lip fleetingly wobbling like blancmange in a centrifuge.
For a moment, man faced beast and beast faced man. Then the lion remembered it was peckish, and charged.
"I attempted to mount my machine, but, owing to the slope and my excitement, I failed twice," said Mr Robertson. "The third time I succeeded in getting away, and I did pedal for all I was worth."

New Bike I miss motorbikes now I have a car... they are no where near as much fun :hopeless: As I have managed to get myself a nice little earner I should now be able to put a fair bit of cash away each week/month, so I think I am going to have to get myself another motorbike... I cant be arsed with the big superbikes (well there is only one that I want).
Quite fancying one of the following:
VOR SM450
Husaberg FS650
Aprilia RS250
Honda RVF400
Aprilia RSV Mille R
Not sure which one though, I can get my hands on the RS250 as soon as I want one as there is one in our garage that is not being ridden... but I am not allowed anywhere near it unless I pay for it, as apparently I have the kiss of death when it comes to motorbikes.
(I have ridden them all before and I love them all for different reasons, but I will always hold fond memories of the Husaberg setting fire to my trousers) :laugh_at:
UK : East : Short video of my bike ride along Norwich Road.. Got one of them bikecams from CPC - its not bad although really shaky on the handlebar mount. People suggest using the helmet mount but I don't wear a crash helmet (I would if I raced but they aren't the miracle safety gain they are claimed to be on normal riding), plus it would look more bait doing this as coppers on bikes also use these cameras. Also I had to resample the frame rate to 25fps as I am European so make all my videos in PAL, not NTSC with 30fps (or 29.997 drop frame).. the "grain" was deliberately added to make it look like a old film and try and cover up some of the shaking..
