I’ve Had an Accident in my Company’s Van. Where Do I Stand? I am a UK courier, and I've had an accident in my company's van. Where do i stand legally? And also, with my employers?
While out on my route the other day, I unfortunately ran into the car in front of me when traffic stopped suddenly. The van is a write-off, so is the car in front. I was doing about 30 mph, approx.
This was my first ever accident, it has shaken me up, and now i'm not sure what position, legally, i am in? The policeman who took my statement, 2 days later, said he doubted it would go to court, in his professional opinion. But even so, my company can discipline me and make me liable to pay for damage caused - i think?? I am quite worried at the moment! It was a genuine accident, I was blinded by some severe low sun, for a second or two, and didn't see immediately that the traffic ahead had suddenly stopped. When i did see it, i was unable to avoid the collision, but did my best to minimise the inevitable impact. feel awful about it, but it truly was an accident, which i think could happen to anyone? I'd be very grateful for any advice? Thanks in advance.
* btw - no-one was hurt badly, thankfully, 2 pple had whiplash, although i didn't know this until the next day, so spent Fri nite freaking out, thought i had paralysed someone for life! :-/
** Dammit, i pride myself on being a good driver, I don't make/take calls on the move. My attention is on the road always. I don't DO road rage, showing off, I don't DO accidents! Really pissed off, can't believe this happened. And the damage!! At 30 ish mph?! Unreal. Think the shock is still kicking in, this happened Friday :-/12
Any1 watch: channel 4 amazing spaces? I've just watched this:
George Clarke's Amazing Spaces - 4oD - Channel 4
Interesting program - shame they didnt include any history on travellers or alternative living - and appear to only be focusing on people who are having these dwellings as a 2nd home / space - but certainly an interesting and inspiring program none the less.
Good if yo are wanting some motivation or ideas on what to do with the space you have
did anyone else watch it?
some motoring quotes So I can prepare for my driving tests, I thought I should also get some edumacation about how cars worked as well as traffic laws etc relating to them. and have been looking for info, and unearthed "gems" like this..
UK drivers on defective rear lights
How about the guy I pulled up alongside at some lights just recently and said to him, "Do you know you have no rear lights at all, no brakes lights at all; oh and your rear fog is on"
He said "thats why I've got my fog light on."
redneck chap buys a pickup truck from his his neighbour in US/Canada (unlike Europe they don't have separate automatic/manual licenses!)
A friend of mine relates the sad story of selling his truck to his neighbour. The guy was a few marbles shy of a gallon. He not only screwed up, he related the stories as if the world were at fault, not him.
First, he spent over half an hour on the phone with some helpful guy at the local transmission shop trying to ensure his transmission fluid was not low, since someone told him that could be what caused his vehicle to be sluggish. In the days before cordless phones he was back and forth from the phone to the truck, trying to find the fluid dipstick based on the guy's description of where it should be. Finally he says"could it be my clutch slipping instead?"
Long pause on the other end... "You have a clutch??? It's not automatic?"
So he complained to my friend that the clutch was bad. They took it to the local Canadian Tire who had replaced the clutch a month before he sold the truck. The tech said "Sorry, we're not going to honour the warranty. The clutch has been abused. You must have been riding it hard." He took them to the hoist and showed them the shaft coming out of the clutch, which was blue for about 6 inches.
"Yes," said the neighbour. "I found it was getting harder to get started from the light in 3rd gear."
yahoo Q&A about handbrake at traffic lights:
Q: Why is that drivers don't use their hand brake at traffic lights.?
A: Because they're tossers. :laugh_at:
a common bit of advice about using the roads in England (either in a car or when cycling) is "assume everyone is an idiot and trying to crash into you". I can understand why...
correct driving position? Perhaps one for those who are shorter - as I am 1.65m height.
thankfully cars have more adjustable seats than in the 90s. my driving instructor says that you must be able to push the clutch pedal fully down from your driving position, also nor do I wish to sit bolt upright like a old granny lady (though sometimes I have to do this at roundabouts). but if I have the seat at the wrong position, my knee eventually plays me up and I screw up the manoeuvres as I don't have good clutch control.
I was reading the owners manual of a Ford Ka and it said to get the seat as far back as possible whilst being able to control the clutch and see properly through both the windscreen and rear mirror. Is that the best idea? (my instructors car is actually a Renault Clio)
Wood burner idea for small vehicle….. Nicked off another forum but I thought it was funny

Driving diesel vs petrol I've had a few lessons now and am probably about "halfway there" (still get nervous in traffic, though now due to two decades worth of extra traffic and not being "19/20 and not giving a shit about myself nor other"). This driving malarky would be OK were it not for all the other buggers on the road
My employer is being really supportive and contributing towards the cost of this and I'm allowed to drive some of the fleet vehicles within reason (obviously I can't and won't drive them "otherwise than in accordance with a license") - any older ones parked up I sometimes use to practice manouveres in (there's 3 empty units so I've got all their parking spaces to use) raaa
eventually if/when I can find someone who is over 21, and has the correct UK license, (its not legal for the foreigners to accompany me even if they are on permit from their country) I am allowed to drive these on L plates.
My current instructors car is a Diesel 1.5 Clio - but these fleet vehicles are all petrol. I've already sussed out that the petrol ones are way easier to stall if you dont' give them more revs, but when I first started learning again I kept giving too much revs on the diesel car :crazy_diz
Is it worth me also doing independent but supervised driving in the petrol motors before my test, or would it just be too confusing? (as my test will be in the diesel car..)12
