- bumpkin bus…. because of the snow and ice I had to get on one of these to get to work.... I hadn't been on a "country" bus for years, as normally I would cycle to anywhere withing 16-20 miles of where I am.... Everyone at the bus stand seemed to know and talk to one another (including the driver) (I'm not used to this, coming from London/SE England! where everyone just has minimal social interaction), is this normal for round here? The vehicle itself was probably older than many people on this forum; it wouldn't start (diesel waxing up?) and some grumpy looking "blakey" type character with a peaked hat was called out from a shed and had to poke about in the engine compartment.. it was like being a young teenager again.... :laugh_at:(don't worry, I didn't spit out the window or tag the vehicle though, I have matured a bit) I reckon one of these vehicles would make a good party bus :groucho:

- UK : East : Colchester : Bus driver puts swear word on destination display unlucky - whoever did it drove the bus just at the time a Tory councillor was in town... Colchester: You'll be 'bus'ted! A probe has been launched after a bus had a swear word where its destination should have been. The First Eastern bus was in Mersea Road, Colchester, when it was spotted by keen-eyed Colchester councillor Kevin Bentley and his wife, Karen. Mr Bentley, portfolio holder for culture and public relations, said: "Karen spotted it first because she was driving and told me to look at the bus. We were both totally incredulous about what we had seen and checked with each other we had seen it." Bob Dorr, operations manager for First, said: "We understood the destinations were set electronically and couldn't be overridden but it would appear there is a technical glitch with the programming. "Some drivers are able to programme the electronic destination blinds with other words - this is a loophole we weren't aware existed. "This concerns us greatly and we are taking immediate steps with the manufacturers to get this loophole closed. - UK : all police forces to get number plate camera kit This technology is already being used to monitor the movements of "rave vehicles" (any large vehicle which has been seen at an unlicensed rave and may carry sound equipment) in the Thames Valley area (although at the moment the cops are only stopping these vehicles if other traffic violations are suspected) Caught on camera Police forces across the UK are turning to scanning technology that reads number plates and identifies stolen cars in an effort to tackle terrorism and fight crime. Justin Hunt reports Justin Hunt Thursday January 13, 2005 Guardian After a series of highly successful crime prevention pilots, the Home Office has agreed to invest £15 million in the national roll-out of a hi-tech vehicle scanning system to help prevent terrorists travelling freely across the country. The automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology uses cameras to instantly scan vehicle number plates and matches them against information stored on police databases to identify stolen vehicles or individuals involved in crime. Twenty-three police forces have been involved in the pilots, which started towards the end of last year. Participating forces include the City of London, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and North Wales. The impact of the technology trials on local crime levels has surprised the officers involved. More than 13,000 arrests and £8m of stolen goods and drugs were seized as a result of using the ANPR systems. The £15m Home Office cash boost is now set to help expand the hi-tech system to other police forces. The additional resources have also been officially earmarked to fund the creation of a national data centre to exchange ANPR data from across the UK to support work to counter terrorism and organised crime. Despite the Home Office's recent commitments to ANPR, the technology is not new. "There are a lot of live systems that have been there since the 90s. The police are buying into this in a much bigger way because they are seeing the ability to affect crime rates not just in traffic scenarios," explains David Scotton, technology director of enforcement for Civica Systems, which is developing the software that is PC-driven. "ANPR systems are being seen by senior officers as a general tool to identify criminal activities." Advances in the technology, such as the ability to use better quality infrared cameras in poorly lit conditions, are helping to drive the rapid take-up. The systems are typically able to monitor up to 3,000 number plates per hour on vehicles travelling up to 100mph. Details of suspect vehicles can be quickly checked against a variety of databases including the Police National Computer and local intelligence databases. The forces that helped to pilot the ANPR systems tended to use a combination of mobile and static cameras. If it is a mobile operation, they would normally have a fleet of cars and motorcycle riders on standby to follow up any suspicious vehicles detected through the system. During one ANPR pilot, police intercepted a Renault Laguna on the suspicion that it was being used in the supply of controlled drugs. The two male occupants were searched but initially nothing was found. When officers detained the men for a strip search, one of the men started to vomit, bringing up 15 wraps of heroin. Both men were arrested. In its pilot, North Yorkshire police seized £320,000 worth of property and drugs using the state-of-the-art scanning device. "What's really impressive is that it can rapidly match intelligence to what is happening on the street," explains Detective Inspector Ian Wills, who headed North Yorkshire's ANPR trial. "We can use other agency databases from a variety of sources. This technology can literally match that intelligence and can alert you when a suspected vehicle is in the vicinity. It is easy to share intelligence between police forces, which is a real bonus." While police officers are relishing the prospect of using the new technology on a wider scale, the ability of these systems to track individual vehicles and match sensitive data is bound to trigger concern among civil liberty groups. "It can be perceived as a bit Big Brother-ish," admits Detective Inspector Wills. "But if your car is taxed and insured and not being used for criminal purposes, you have everything to gain from this technology. We only use it to target the people we are interested in." - UK : LDN : Could Ken’s pollution control run ravers out of the city? Red Ken's trying to turn Green - he's already had the balls to introduce the Congestion Charge (which I fully support) but another one of his proposals is a large fine/tax on large diesel vans/lorries which do not meet emmission controls standards. This proposal is at consultation stage at the moment (so any Londoners can give their views) Although the overall initiative to reduce pollution is good, I have concerns over the these plans.. (and I am someone who cycles everywhere, tries to be eco-friendly and doesn't even own a motor vehicle!) The scheme would potentially involve the registration of all large vehicles entering London and their movements being monitored on CCTV by both TfL staff and Scotland Yard's Road Policing Units to ensure the rules are being complied with. I would expect that particular attention will be paid to older vehicles or those which do not show a recogniseable "corporate branding" I don't think Ken's intention is evil - but theres a danger of "function creep" should this scheme be implemented - pollution control aside, this regime would clearly be a good excuse for cops and other authorities to control the movements of "large vehicles". The implications for the drivers/owners of rig vans are obvious...

(SWP/HdC were collecting vehicle details at the Bettwys mountain rave despite it being out of their force area, some friends of mine spotted the unmarked vehicle which was at the rave driving into DVLA later that day!) Asbo threat to 300 'car cruisers' Up to 300 "car cruisers" have been issued with the first stages of Anti-social Behaviour Orders after mass meetings at car parks on Barry Island. Hundreds of people from south Wales have been using the seaside resort as a meeting point, turning up in modified cars to race and carry out stunts. Police say car parks became virtual no-go areas, with missiles thrown. Some 100 officers attended a recent meet, and issued 300 with Asbo referrals in one night. People as young as 17 and into their 40s were travelling from Bridgend, Nelson, Pontypridd, Cardiff, some in stolen vehicles, leading to complaints from local people about noise and intimidation. There have been instances of car parks becoming virtually "no-go" areas whilst occupied by car cruisers Sgt Jim Hall, South Wales Police In a large-scale operation, codenamed Hummel, 100 officers attended one meeting. Entrances and exits to the car park were blocked and the 300 people at the event were issued with warnings and the first referral of an Asbo. Four referrals have to be made before a full Asbo is issued. Sgt Jim Hall, who led the operation for South Wales Police, said: "At times, in excess of 300 vehicles have gathered at locations. "Their manner of driving en route to, at, and leaving the event is at times dangerous with excessive speed and lack of consideration for other road users. "In addition, they are adversely affecting the quality of life of residents and other visitors to the area who can see and hear them." Flame-thrower device He said that the operation was carried out following complaints from local people and of increased criminal behaviour at such events. "There have been instances of car parks becoming virtually "no-go" areas whilst occupied by car cruisers and missiles have been thrown at police officers attending such events," he said. "Evidence of criminal damage to the car park facilities in Barry Island and damage to the car park surface from burnt-out vehicles has also been found. "Not only that, stolen vehicles have been used to perform stunts for the enjoyment and amusement of spectators. "A flame-thrower device was used to try and set alight one of the stolen vehicles which was subsequently abandoned." During the operation, police issued warnings to everyone at the event that if they attended any other unofficial car cruises in south Wales they could be arrested and their vehicle seized. Officers are now working with some of those involved in the events to find alternative sites to hold official meetings. - Alert : KDW’s truck stolen for those of you who know KDW he's one of the "rave veterans" of the Thames Valley and doesn't deserve this... I'm also going to make a very un-PC statement (for me) on this board- in that area where the van disappeared, there have been a number of gypsies... I can't help but put 2 and 2 togehter KDW himself is a good example of a someone with a positive traveller lifestyle - he's always worked to get what he owns and never done major crime etc but if todays gypsy travellers steal off other travelling people like that then quite frankly they deserve all the ASBOs and evictions and I'm not surprised their lifestyle is being deemed unacceptable.. not like me to sound like a Tory but KDW is a good friend of mine over the years - things were just starting to go right for him after some hassles in life as well :( Had my truck stolen in Tilehurst area of Reading somepoint wednesday afternoon! Its a G reg Leyand Road Runner registration G86 GOF Council don't have it, police don't have it and the DVLA dont have it! vehicle Trace hotline don't have it on their register! which is sopposed to be linked to all pounds in the country! It isa nicotene cream colour with a 20ft box on the back. It has two unusual ramps on it from it's days as a hard sided car transporter. I expect these have been wheighed in by now as they where alumininium. You may recgonise it cos it wasthe old ToM truck. It looks like this! - Off-road vehicles ‘danger to lives’ Apr 20 2003 By Monica Hawley URL OFF-ROAD vehicles and motorbikes are putting residents' lives in danger and ruining the countryside by speeding along a normally quiet lane in Coldharbour. Over the last year, Capel Parish Council has received regular calls about bikes and 4x4 vehicles driving dangerously along Crockers Lane, which leads from the village to Wotton. They are allowed to use the lane because it is a public byway, but villagers have complained that many do not stick to the path and are churning up the countryside. Concerned residents, Forestry Commission wardens, the National Trust area manager and district councillor Neil Maltby (Con, Leith Hill), met last week to discuss the problem. They drove down the lane, which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, to see the damage that has been caused by motorbikes and 4x4s. As the meeting took place just three days after an illegal rave just off the lane, it was also full of rubbish that had been left behind. Rory Cobb, of the Forestry Commission, said barriers and fencing have been put in to deter people from using the lanes for driving. But one barrier had been rammed and some sections of railing taken out. Wildlife conservation officer Glen Boxall said: "The other day I stopped 38 motorcycles off the green lane within two hours. Wednesday evenings are lethal. There are about 50 bikes outside the pub and they run from there to the Wotton Hatch pub." He added that small footpaths are being turned into large tracks because drivers are not sticking to the road and that a number of raves over the past year have not helped the situation. "On Sunday morning, when fire and police were here, you would not have thought you were in a peaceful countryside village in Surrey," he said. "It completely goes against the grain of the use of the countryside." Pat Tate, of Abinger Parish Council, said: "These actions are changing the whole nature of the countryside. It's becoming a huge playground and the two things are not compatible." Last March, Capel Parish Council set up an answerphone service that residents can ring to report any misuse of green lanes. It has led to 38 messages about speeding motor-bikes, wrecked cars and 4x4s in near-misses with walkers. After the meeting, chairman Jenny Richards said the situation will be monitored for another year. "The Forestry Commission is going to put wooden stakes as a deterrent in the bit of the lane that has been badly eroded by 4x4s. "But the worry is that there is very little we can do to stop the motorbikes because they can get over or round them if they really want to. "We are going to advertise the helpline number in the hope that people will report any misuse," she said. Signs have also gone up asking people to keep to the track and advising that if damage continues, it could result in a Traffic Regulation Order removing all public vehicular rights from the lane. But Mrs Richards warned: "To get the lane downgraded would be difficult because it is a very emotive situation."
