they are contributing nothing to the forum and clogging the chatroom up for hours at a time :you_crazy:you_crazy:you_crazy while being offensive to each other
maybe the ip could be blocked for a week or three as was done once to another group of schoolkids? make them go clog up someone else's site :groucho:
short server outage there was a short server outage today around 19:27 (UK time), thankfully we're back now..
not sure whether Dr Bunsen rebooted it after he got my text or whether there is some clever "auto-restart" software on the server anyway...
any ideas what caused it?
adsense & sponsors I've added some adsense banners which will display only to users who aren't subscribers or staff, and only at the bottom of thread pages excluding certain forums which google's t&c's prohibit (ie: drugs & dating / sex). It's an experiment so let me know what you think.
I've also found a sponsor (enjoy party pills) willing pay to have their logo at the bottom of the forum home page and mentioned in our outgoing email. Again this is an experiment...
And banners are now refreshing every two minutes as well without having to reload the page although we only have 3 running at the moment.12
text layouts I'm spending a lot of my time correcting text layouts for staff who've pasted text but couldn't be bothered to add carridge returns. It matters and I've got better things to do with my time...
gremlins in the software i am posting these glitches in case they are symptoms of something more serious and you are not aware of them [only my edit of angel being unrecorded causes me any concern]
this morning i edited a post by angel to include the text of an article she linked to and the forum post does not record that edit
i am finding the counter for threads in the cilla forum is not accurate for me - numbers are exagerated and the thread clears to zero on viewing the last page which none of the other forums do [unless you have seen all the pages]
WRT other forums i am finding that it is not always recording me viewing the threads - so i can read page 2 and 3, post a reply and find it has left page 2 marked as unread :crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy:

Adsense Strangely my application to join google's adsense program was rejected yesterday siting "difficult navigation" as the reason although I take it as a euphamism for teh fact they don't like our content unless I'm mistaken?!
minor outage for about 10 mins some PHP error came up instead of the forum and would not let me log in... it said "unknown error!" seems OK now but might be worth being aware this is happening..
why close our download section to all but some? Because there's a DOS exploit in our software which allowed some nice person to force the site offline briefly a month ago and who's tried it several times since then. Having said that when it first happened I put some mitigation in place to make it harder for them which helped. However given their determination I was forced to shut it temporarily when they tried again on tuesday night. Anyway I've been in touch with one of the code authors of the hack were using and the problem should be fixed sometime in the future, I hope..

one for SdZ maybe – tech advise needed for another local forum OK since moving to Ipswich I've been on here as well - its a board run by progressive activist types, some of whom are ravers..

although its not massively high traffic it has good positive stuff on there but the forum is getting hammered by spambots etc.
they want to update the site (contains a wiki as well as this forum) but the main "expert" chap has left the area and although a new guy is taking over he is a bit worried about the size of the tasks..
And they definitely need to can those spammers or they will get rinsed.
I notice they use the same software as the old Kacchina board did (which I why I thought maybe James would know about this). are there better upgrades or will they need to migrate to vbulletin (assuming this can be done?)

PV is reaching out to the East… not just East Anglia (although we now appear to be picking up a significant amount of traffic from this area),
I've also noticed an increasing amount of lurkers from Asian countries - mostly Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and India...
For many language and censorship may be a barrier (apparently some ISPs filter all messageboards both incoming and outgoing; anything "dodgy" is reported to security forces) and discussing controversial stuff like drugs etc can get you busted under "terrorism" laws..
but the usage patterns seem to indicate people genuinely interested in our content rather than spammers looking for an opportunity to get a sales pitch in..
registrations Given the current climate of board abuse elsewhere I'm considering making us registered users only to preserve the good nature vibe we've enjoyed so far. What do you think!? hugh
