Computer help. I think its gonna die soon! sometimes when i turn it on it starts up, keeps running for maybe 30seconds to a minute then turns itself off before it gets to the sign in bit for vista...
if i keep trying to turn it on it usually eventually works after maybe 5/10 attempts..
When windows loads it gives this message saying windows recovered from an unexpected shutdown...

Any Linux geeks out there?
I would like to re-partition one of my drives and I hear a Linux Boot up disc can do this without having to re-install any software or loosing any data.
Whereas windows will require me to re-install and I will lose all my data.
Can anyone help? I've got about 800MB left of the partition which is a mega pain.
Any Linux geeks out there?
I'm looking for someone into Linux.
I hear a linux boot-up disc can re-partition my drive without me deleting all my software and data that I would like to keep.
Windows - regretfully will delete my data and so I'm reluctant to do that.
Any help would be fantastic
Technical Assistance Required Hi All,
How would you re-partition your drive without losing data?
I have 2 hard drives and the idiot before me partitioned the drive with about 4 GB spare. So my C/D drive (c being the main) has no GOD DAMN ROOM. Grrrrrr.
That's all taken up now and I need to find out how to re-partition the drive so I don't lose the data (since windows own version would wipe my slate clean)
I've heard that Linux can do this or a Linux start up disc ( not putting the O/S on just running it from the disc)
Any suggestions, links, software, direct downloads and easy instructions and I would be very greatful. In fact, so greatful a PM to you if it works and there's a special prize for the one who solves my problem
BIOS upgrade Engrish translation I was looking for the BIOS upgrade for a motherboard (a recycled e-machines) as it may solve some ACPI problems with Linux..
this is the only translation I could find
I think I will leave this BIOS at the original version
And in the end I just turned off the ACPI (power management...

Linux/Ubuntu Installation Problems *EDIT* Moved from windows Vista Thread **
Decided to cut to the chase and just format my HDD and try out Kubuntu as it should be.
Installation went fine. Booted fine but then I just get a blank screen with a cursor and nothing else. Tried 3 times and still the same result.
Any ideas Linux heads? Did I install the wrong one? I used the AMD64 version. I guessed this was the version I should use as I have an 64 bit AMD cpu.
I'm happy to just to start again and bung XP back on, but I'd like to get this Kubuntu working if I can, just to see what it's like.12
I did it (finally got a linux machine working) been meaning to have another go at this for a while (about 5 years lol), this weekend I'm still feeling a bit too ill/knackered to party so thought I'd try to install Linux on the old PC that my mum was using before she went back to Malaysia for the winter.
I need to learn some Linux/Unix skills anyway for work as our business is expanding and we need stuff like servers and VOIP telephone exchanges but can't afford the microsoft solutions..
This is an Dell about 6 years old, only 384MB of ram and PIII 850MHZ cpu, it was sluggish even on Windows 2K, but I've loaded this xubuntu and it seems a fair bit faster (I did have puppy linux on it but it isn't multi user and I wanted to experiment with accessing the box remotely from the internet and puppy logs you in as root all the time!)
I tried Linux about 5 years ago but both me and my mates couldn't get it to work easily, it hurt our brains trying to get even the networking set up and I think some of us gave up in the end and started snorting ketamine, but this ubuntu seemed a lot more straightforward..
last time I used a Unix machine properly was in 1992! this xfce desktop reminds me a bit of the Sun workstations from around then but with much more power..
I reckon I've got a few more years life out of an old PC as well which I'm pleased about (this computer was decommissioned from where I work 2 years ago, even before I worked there!), this is definitely worth a try if you have an "obsolete" PC lying around..

PC vs. Mac ah the old debate, and everyones got their preference!
mainly i gonna get a laptop (partly cos my desktop has died, partly so i can take it into college) and 'cos i'm doin a creative course and macs are supposed to be the standard for digital production sorta stuff, i'm swayin towards 'em
the one thing is that torrent files are mostly windows only, e.g. i need cubase but i can only find it torrent for the pc. fuck payin £400 for it.
so yeah, generally i'd be interested in people's experiences, particularly if they've used both, and the pro's/con's of each etc.12
Windows Vista So, which Windows users will be moving over to Vista in the next month then?
(Some of you may already have an evaluation copy)
Not sure if I'm going to bother. I haven't used it properly yet but it looks like a lot of eye candy and no real improvements. Seems like a resource hog too.
Mind you, that's what almost everyone was saying about XP when it arrived.12
Windows Vista I was walking around Pan tip. This is the big computer world in Bankok and some guys where talking about windows vista. So after several shop keepers advised me to upgrade and one of my friends also is doing his own P.R,I got thinking. I only wanted to buy a new 2 gig flash drive but I guess this is what you get walking around a computer place for too long and trying to find a good price.:groucho:

I put the don't really care option in because I get the feeling that most of us using XP is happy with it. But I would like some advice so ????????12
