How to embed youtube and soundcloud. Hello,
I have noticed people seem to be getting a bit lost recently when trying to embed certain things on the forum (no thanks to my shoddy explanation) It is hard to explain on the forum cos if you type the BB code to show someone, it will vanish cos it thinks you are trying to embed something. Selfish Soundcloud users It has dawned on me that a hge portion of the soundcloud users that I followed after they followed me or sent me a message asking for me to lend an ear (not the spammy one obviously) Do not spend time listening to other peoples music. Soundloud has always been a 2 way street for me, unless it is a particular artist I want to listen to, in that case I don't expect them to listen to my tracks. I don't understand why they will choose to add me if they don't listen to my tracks?? It seems there has now become a large number of people trying to sell there music on juno or the istore too.I know there is no rules against it but I found SC to be a good tool for lesser known artists to be noticed and shrared. Not for the midicore artists to spam their links on your comment rail/bar thingy. They always say things like "Wow this sounds really good, I would be greatfull if you could take the time to listen to my track at www.somefacelesscunt.com" :sign0073:
As I said I prefer it when it is a mutual exchange of to people listening to each others music and giving feedback. No tDJ Trancey McWorship getting his 10,,000th play. These damn jokers. Ok so I'm removing allot of people from my soundcloud. If I make a mistake, please let me know ASAP cos I don't wanna miss out on anything. Not that I have a huge number of followers on here anyway. Family on facebook / myspace? Have you? I dont think i can do it.
I have had my aunt and cousin sitting in my 'friends requests' for about 2 months now and i REALLY think i don't want to add them. Mainly because I want my own life, half the reason for moving out of home and and away was because of all that. They do not need to knwo what goes on in my life..'what you don't know can't hurt you' etc and if they see some of those pics...it wouldnt be too jolly at the next family do i can tell you.
I feel dead harsh though because they are my close, close family, but i feel im justified in my actions :)

New social network "mastodon" Getting a lot of articles in the tech press, genuinely open source "twitter" type system without ads/data tracking and currently with more users than I'd expected and less fools!

The main one mastodon.social is overloaded and not accepting more users but just pick one that is multi user and near to your country. Use the "federated timeline" to see the "toots" (which is what they call "tweets" from people on other servers).
You get 500 characters and can also add multiple pictures - its a lot like Usenet with a better UI and before the idiots took it over!
Whatsapp now passing data to Facebook and will allow businesses to send ads TBH I never saw any real need to use Whatsapp even before the FB takeover; as I get issued a mobile device for work, and even PAYG mobile call and data costs are dirt cheap (or included in bundles) compared to what they used to be, and the harsh reality is global telecoms networks are always going to be accessible to feds/govt/security services, as they are the biggest paying customers of such networks as well as having the power to regulate them.
Giving away your private data to private companies in the hope that they might "make it safer" (without actually paying these companies to do this and then still independently auditing what they are actually doing with it) isn't going to work.

Facebook admits to what data it collects on users Google also does this; but opened up its profile page years ago (initially the data it had on me was hilariously inaccurate; placing me in my early middle age rather than late youth and assuming I was a German or Dutch national (although with some family links to East Asia) and that I was also bald upon my head (if I turned off my adblockers I'd get ads for wigs and hair restorer :laugh_at:).
I've since checked (before turning the whole lot off) and it does at least get my age and gender correct - curiously Google doesn't seem to be bothering to collect other data; I suspect Google do at least accept that some folk are going to block all the tracking cookies/ads but it would cause them more reputation damage to deny services to people doing so (who are likely to be tech and privacy aware).
Of course facebook expects people to share much more personal info about themselves and their friends...

Facebook attempting to prevent use of adblockers TBH suspect this is PR aimed at keeping ad revenue coming in, not sure if this would even be 100% possible with decent ad / element blockers such as Ublock Origin. This kind of blocker can remove not just ads but any bit of content on a page that has some kind of common identifier - even if FB use cryptic element names (they already do for the boxes that appear if you look at public sites without being logged in) these have a pattern and can be detected.

More about Ublock Origin (you can certainly get it for Firefox and Chrome, I only use Firefox for browsing these days myself). Its been around for a while but initially was harder to use - the Germans (they were the first to find themselves blocked from news-sites etc for using ad blockers) put a lot of effort into making it more user friendly.
It can take slightly more configuration to ensure all the shite is blocked and the blockers are switched on (it sometimes defaults to being switched off and first time you install it remember to update the filters (do this from the dashboard) but is particularly good for those who read content in multiple languages.
I even customised it to let me read the kinds of pages where boxes and other rubbish block out the content if you are not signed in or use adblockers and I am not an expert at web development by any means..

US : Yahoo sold to Verizon Not sure what this means for the UK and Europe as Verizon has little obvious presence compared to USA (although I think they do provide business grade connections in Germany that are trusted by the Government as the BNetzA (German Communications Ministry) uses them for their public facing website.

He does show folk who are worried about their own and/or their pets privacy how to stop the photos coming up by changing the privacy settings, although it does appear the location tag is held for up to 30 days. The website cannot distinguish between people photographing their own cats, or random ones they see in the street and some data especially in Europe has considerable position errors most likely caused by different GPS coordinate storage formats.
it therefore doesn't cause that much privacy risk to humans or cats; but shows up many issues with the use of smartphone geolocation (including its lack of accuracy) and there is some interesting "big data" split showing the distribution between countries and continents.
it is not intended to be an accurate proportional survey of the number of pet or other small cats in each country (in comparison to one a pet food company or the Environment Ministry might carry out) due to differing access to smartphones and attitudes to privacy per country.
I think it also only stores info for 1 million cats worldwide and devotes most of its resources to people who are OK with their cats location being online - otherwise the prof (who has been doing this since 2014) would likely have crashed his uni's server, Google (which is likely being fed the same data twice) and half the American Internet :laugh_at:
I always turn off my geolocation on my phone (if I am not using an "old fashioned" camera) and meow at the cats I photograph so they know they are being watched :laugh_at:

Alternatives to Flickr? I use Flickr quite a lot for storing and sharing photos as it is easy to deeplink the resized versions whilst keeping a full size one available on line; even with the changes Yahoo made about 10 years ago there is still a useable tag/commenting system and I don't want to cane all of DR B's bandwidth on this server.
The bulk of my photos are taken for educational rather than artistic reasons; I do not use much processing / HDR / editing on them they are often obscure items like electronic circuit boards (a full size photo is useful to identify small components which are hard to see); although some appear to be more popular than I expected (Flickr has always tended to attract folk who are tech aware but also have artistic interests)
If I get the rare chance to attend something like a party at the housing co-op I try and take along my DSLR - I do use one sort of image enhancement but otherwise use it just like a film camera with a motordrive and endless supply of film. Other than geotags I leave the EXIF data in my pictures so anyone interested in photography can learn from it.
Instagram, facebook etc as well as privacy issues mangle the photos and metadata which I don't want.
Unfortunately Yahoo are going tits up and might be selling out to Daily Mail group and Flickr is being downsized; which is a shame.
Anyone know of any other equivalent services that I could use?
