UK : Eastern MP calls for more rave clampdowns There is already a Government committee looking into this issue (something called the Home Office Research Study group, the committee is usually made up of academics, Civil Servants and senior Police officers)
These days it can take as little as a year or two for their recommendations to be made into a Parliament debate and subsequently a law. - Consider how quickly Ketamine was classified for instance.... Things used to take longer but since 1997 or so Blair has made Government work faster by demanding quicker delivery from the Civil Service..
I suppose its seen by the "other side" as 10-15 years worth of crime that has gone unpunished (despite more legislation!) which has led to this further backlash...

Government considers raves clampdown
CHRIS FISHER, EDP POLITICAL EDITOR
19 July 2007 20:22
The government is to ask a top police study group to look at ways of clamping down on illegal raves in Norfolk and other rural areas.
Home Office minister Vernon Coaker made the commitment in the Commons last night after South West Norfolk MP Christopher Fraser said people would be dissuaded from holding and supporting such gatherings only if the government showed it was serious in its intent and provided an effective deterrent.
Mr Fraser emphasised that illegal raves were being held regularly in his constituency, that they were causing "huge distress, damage and expense", and that current laws seemed unable to stop them.
He suggested the introduction of further legislation to make "organising or being involved in the organisation of" a rave, and attending a rave, criminal offences.
Mr Coaker said the Association of Chief Police Officers had already recognised that raves were "a growing problem", and promised to refer Mr Fraser's proposals for consideration by a sub-group of the organisation that was looking at the issue.
Interesting looking book on police complaints Let me say at the outset I'm no lawyer and I haven't even seen the following book in the flesh (in the paper ?) I hope nobody here will need it but I thought it looked interesting, and could be really useful if you ever need to make a complaint about the police and take it through the procedures. Probably not one for the legal beginner but I should think that if you've got a bit of sense you could save yourself a lot of money and hassle.
Police Misconduct: legal remedies, by the Legal Action Group - £37 quid, but currently on offer at £30. Which might sound expensive until you see the price of most legal textbooks !
I have a low opinion of solicitors cos 99.99% of them are a bunch of lazy, selfish, self serving lags who don't give a stuff about your case as long as they can line their pockets. In my experience of the non-criminal side, if solicitors were exposed to the commercial realities of providing customer service instead of having a nice cosy closed shop most of them would go bust inside a year.
I'm currently doing an employment tribunal claim myself and I'll be using another book from this publisher - I'll let you know what I think of it when I get to the point of using it ! Hope this one might be of interest to someone though, even if only so you can tell your sol he's talking bollocks - and if you buy it, do let me know too what it's like :-)
Disclaimers: I am not a lawyer, I haven't even read it never mind used it, this advice is worth less than what you paid me for it, I have no financial connection, you may still need to bung a barrister a couple of grand if it goes to court, this book could possibly be so inaccurate that it might give an unqualified user an automatic passport to chokey, may contain fnord, I am not a number I am a temporary autonomous zone, always pay some greedy bastard for qualified legal advice to preserve your rights so at least it'll be his fault not that that will make any difference, objects on acid could be closer than they appear, most police are actually sterling chaps who would give you the shirt off their backs, the helmet off their heads and the number off their shoulder, etc etc.
Have fun ;-)
Nick
Help needed to avoid prosecution! Basically me and a few mates get together in a public wood once a year for an event affectionately known locally as 'Party in the woods'. All the usual stuff, generator, rig, projection screens, bonfire etc. Last year was the tenth year and was the biggest turnout with between 200 and 300 folks.
Every year we do the right thing and tell the cops before we do it (only like a day before usually or on the day) the cops then inform the environmental health who turn up on the night and say:
" well basically you should have applied for a licence, but as you have left it too late all we can do is do sound checks around the area, if its not too loud on our equipment then we're happy, if its too loud you will get a court summons"
Every year its gone ok, no problems (except the occasional local chav causing a bit of mischief) but this year all the local papers are running an article threatening council court action:
http://www.cravenherald.co.uk/mostpopular.var.1455571.mostviewed.call_for_ban_on_illegal_rave.php
I'm just hoping that some nice people in the know on this board can offer any advice (I'm looking for a cool loophole) that can enable us to set this up again this year, its one of those nights that everyone looks forward to and old mates trek up from other parts of the country to meet etc, will be such a shame if these fuddles from the council manage to pull the plugs

Parliament Debate on Raves Interesting first comment from a Tory MP (of all people!)
Mr. Bellingham: The Minister will be aware that there was a time when raves were generally low-key, good-humoured events. During the past few weeks, there have been a number of illegal raves in my constituency where there has been substantial criminal damage and violence, a great deal of damage to property and the peddling of illegal drugs. The local police are fully stretched and are doing their best, but does he agree that the time has come for records of raves to be centrally recorded? The Government should look again at the powers the police have. Will he consider the matter urgently?
Illegal Raves: 9 Jul 2007: House of Commons debates (TheyWorkForYou.com)
City residents subjected to rave Around 400 party-goers took over a derelict building in Bristol for an all-night illegal rave.
One resident said she was "astonished" to be woken by the ravers at the old Pilkington Glass building in Redcliffe, early on Sunday morning.
"Redcliffe is a residential area and it is unthinkable that residents were subjected to this," she told the BBC.
Police attended the event throughout the night, and it was broken up "peacefully", a spokesman said.
One person was arrested by officers.
Another resident, who prefers to remain anonymous, added: "The music started at around midnight and went on until 9.30am."

Youtube! I would like to ask why there is alot of paranoia going around about revealing rig names and locations of parties that have already happened when all you hav to do is go onto youtube and u can find out who did the party, where it was, and when it happend?
Some one explain?
P.S.
Also why are we worried about all this when all you hav to do is go onto squatjuice and u can find all the info u want?
It seems our efforts to keep info quiet are pointless!
UK : East : Norfolk "farmer couples dream wedding" busted for noise! This court case just shows how divided society is and how entrenched views are - this couple (who aren't exactly young irresponsible people) were busted for a private event on their own family farm, because the fucking whinging nimby neighbours wouldn't let them have one weekend of fun...
They made some good points though - if a couple like this go through the proper channels and still get busted - its hardly surprising younger people take the risk of illegal events if they feel they will "get in trouble whatever they do"

Woodland wedding courts trouble
21 June 2007 04:36
It was a magical woodland wedding ceremony in a candlelit chapel of love, with straw bale pews and an organ.
But the all-night party celebrating the marriage of David and Sarah Alston ended in a court conviction - and a post-wedding bill, of fines and costs, totalling more than £9,000.
For the dance music pumping from the outdoor venue near Cromer, ironically including a live band called Dead Silence, was in breach of a council noise abatement notice.
Supply teacher Mr Alston, 45, and his brother Rob, 48, both from Low Common, Alby, who were the joint landowners of the Bartle's Wood party site, denied the breach, but were found guilty by magistrates yesterday.
David Alston was fined £750, Rob Alston £500 and both - members of a well-known Norfolk farming family - ordered to pay costs of £4,000.
Afterwards David and his wife, who is a designer, were angry that they had been taken to task over their legal party, done in co-operation with the authorities, when many illegal raves were escaping court action.
The wedding party, attended by more than 300 guests last August, also featured a home-made beach of 50 tonnes of sand, a hot-tub, a tee-pee, casino, as well as football, cricket and sumo-wrestling fun for the guests. The marriage was formalised at a register office a few days later.
But it was the all-night music which upset neighbours at a nearby camp site, who complained to the council and saw the breaches of a noise notice which had been served the day before the party in a bid to keep amplified music in check.
Cromer magistrates heard that people camping at the Deer's Glade site, at Hanworth, complained - resulting in North Norfolk District Council environmental protection officer Davina Romaine visiting the party, on the weekend of August 5-6, and reporting three breaches.
David Alston said he notified the police, council and neighbours of the party, and said they could have an invitation if they wanted.
During the event he liaised with Miss Romaine, turning the music down when advised, and checked with the council call centre for complaints, but was unaware of any problems before the breach was notified.
He also said the caravan park put up a notice saying they would try to stop the party, "giving the false impression it was an unpleasant affair" causing holidaymakers to view it as a nuisance rather than a mild irritation.
David Alston added that the type of music being played - a mixture of drum and bass, techno and reggae - may have affected people's perceptions, with one witness having said she would have found it less intimidating if it had been the sound of Abba.
Barrister Matthew McNiff, for the council, said the case was simply about whether the notice had been breached, which was a subjective decision by the official using either ears or electronic equipment.
The "boom, boom" could also be a nuisance if it was no louder than background noise but was out of character to the area - and the Alstons could have simply turned the music off, as they had done during the wedding ceremony so they could speak or be heard.
Tony Williams, chairman of the bench, said the Alstons' attempts at co-operation were not the same as compliance, but that the breach was negligent rather than intentional.
The level of fines, which could have been a maximum of £5,000, reflected their previous good character, and Rob Alston's lesser involvement.
David Alston told the magistrates he was devastated the matter had ended up in court.
Afterwards he added that they would consider appealing, as it was "ridiculous" the council had picked on a wedding, while Sarah said it did not send out a very good message to youngsters who might be encouraged to hold illegal raves, having seen
the problems a legal party had suffered.
Council environmental protection team leader Mark Whitmore said they worked hard to allow the party to take place by talking to the Alstons, but their "failure to comply with reasonable requirements" resulted in the court action, adding: "While this party was not all illegal rave, the effects were the same on local residents."
But despite the hefty price they paid, the bride and groom felt the event was "still all worth it - it was the best day of our lives".
