A map of Europe. I made this up from a unlabelled SVG as I wanted to know where our listeners are and found it hard to remember all the new countries since the 1990s...
other sizes are here, feel free to make whatever use of it you need (for planning festival travel or school/college/uni)

Any uni folk on here? Just interested to know if many people on here are at uni and how much the workload effects there ability to still have a thriving party life
I've got an offer for uni starting in September but I've always been in two minds about whether I should go or not. I have always been clever, but I've never enjoyed studying off my own back and find it really hard to motivate myself to get any independent work done - which I know will cause me pretty big problems at uni unless i sort it out.
All the people I know at uni, are much more dedicated to their studies than I am and they are all struggling with the workload, and a lot of them are just forcing themselves to carry on with it because they think it will be better for them in the long run. I'm not sure I would be able to do that if it was me in that situation. I know I should just try and go with it, since anything I do other than uni will still be there for me even if I go to uni and it doesn't work out, but it's gonna be an awfully expensive year finding out whether it is for me or not.
Very confused about what I want to be doing, and when I'm not fully sure what I want to be doing I find it very difficult to motivate myself to do it
Any advice from anyone student or not greatly appreciated12
NL : Crazy Dutch students fight over washing machine in student halls!

EU : Datacide is still about I remember this lot from the mid 90s - although they discuss squats, parties and all sorts else (especially politics from a left/anarchist perspective and alternative culture) these articles are that in depth they and cover so many subjects the education section seems to be the best place (they are proper Unversity grade research to be fair, with footnotes at the bottom etc..)
this is worth bookmarking for future reference, as it may take you a bit of time to read each article (the whole magazines are shared there).

UK : East : main uni bar closed down, but £200 000 question mark gets award! I feel a bit sorry for the student union, but they should have let all the dance promoters in (not just the "cleaner image") types and non students as even the more boisterous seeming lot aren't any more trouble than normal students, and stood up a bit more to the cops/licensing if there were "safety concerns"

and if the uni will spend that money on a giant question mark, surely the question is "is it even worth going to university at all"? :laugh_at:

UK : East : Ipswich primary school children encouraged to read aloud to dog. Seems like a perfectly sensible idea to me
The Shih Tzu was brought into school in October after research revealed that children who read to a dog improve their reading age by more than a year in under eight months.

NL : Student grants to be removed, replaced with loans / long student charge because of austerity, the basic student grants in the Netherlands will be replaced by loans (similar to what happened in the UK starting from 20 years ago)
new Dutch students will be paying up to €12 000 fees over the duration of a normal course (still cheaper than here)
also students who have not graduated after 6 years must pay a extra "long studies charge"

Fake Degrees from actual HE institutions in the UK…required for TEFL in Taiwan. Hey PV,
I was wondering if anybody has any experience in this area?
I do recall looking into it a number of years back out of curiosity and found there to be two types....
The so called 'degree mills' which churn out online degree's from non-existent or barely credible institutions.
And the other type, the ones which provide the Degree and the transcripts from actual institutions....
The reason I ask, I'm currently in Taiwan and looking for work. The best jobs for westerners (pay/hours/conditions) is teaching English as a foreign language.
Bizarrely, Taiwanese Schools don't request that you have a TEFL certificate (Teaching English as a Foreign Language)
Most of them aren't bothered about any teaching experience at all!
However, they're looking to keep their turnover as low as possible (understandable in the education sector)
Any organisation who wishes to keep hold of you can apply for a work permit on your behalf.
Taiwanese Law states that they will only grant these permits to individuals who hold a Degree (Min of 4 years study at a physical institution in their own country....
Obviously, I would never consider any illegal activity at all! I would like to know if anybody has any experience in related matters, good sites to get these Degree's from etc. PM if you like.
Any help would be appreciated or I have to do expensive Visa runs!

NL : Free text books from De Volkskrant Not all of these are in Dutch either, some in English... they do ask for your email and might send a couple of ads (which will be in Dutch anyway) but there's loads of stuff here... hell, even the advert is useful to me as I can learn something..
de Volkskrant - gratis studieboeken!
damned good book So last week when my chum left for Utrecht (can't remember how to spell it) I was having a fantastic conversation with his dad about languages and different cultures and so on, and as we were all saying our goodbyes his mum say 'oh, your learning Serbian, here's a random book that you may find useful.' Fuckin hell.....useful? It's basically saved my from crying haha
And here it is:

It's help correct me with some very silly and very basic pronounciation mistakes I've been making, as well as how to structure grammar and that.....where was this book when I decided to learn the language?!?!
Yeah, there we have it. The book.12
MY : An electronics course at a local community college. Note that there are as many girls as boys in class - this is normal for Asia. One girl came all the way from India. Jestine Yong (the teacher) is only slightly older than me (age 43). He lives near where my mums family are from but in a really posh area but is very modest about this.
Many of his students have not gone up to University but have only had basic high school education, and have gone on to get good jobs in local companies.

and I would recommend it to anyone interested in electronics (I was able to repair a monitor with busted backlight and I am not as brainy or agile as the folk in Asia)..

Advice on IT Courses Okaly doke, I know quite a few of you work in the IT area or at least have some idea about this.
As a sub-career until I get going on my dream job (lol), I wanted to further what I already do in my spare time as the logical choice for a decent job. I already fix most people's computers anyway and fiddle about quite alot with my own. Im pretty into most aspects of computing bar generic data input type things. More in the technical side.
I have the opportunity to borrow some dolla to do a course. Although I know there are alot out there these days, mostly worthless to harvest cash. Does anyone have an experience with short courses that will get me going? I'm not after a 20k+ job a year at the moment, entry level, technician assistant type area. Or something.
I've heard about CompTIA which are meant to be good? These are available in week courses. I know week learning isn't as good as a year long courses, but I need a job now and with barely any qualifications I'm struggling. These seems like the best next step!
Cheers.
