NL : Coevorden removes geese due to recession but Trizin rehomes them :) Coevorden in Drenthe is one of those places in the Netherlands where they have the goose march (I've posted videos of this before). There is also a statue of a woman who sold geese (they were marched to boats and then taken to England, probably round here, as the East Anglian geese were similarly marched to London where the rich Londoners ate them at Christmas). Of course some of the smarter geese might have worked out what often happens to a goose around Christmas, and escaped. So there are many wild geese across Drenthe, and a lot at Coevorden.
Unfortunately in the summer they started building some new estates/office blocks there, the building work disrupted their habitat, and the Council did not want to spend money finding a place for them. Trizin and his friends from the Ganzenparadijs went there and tried to get then to move to a nearby canal but the geese ended up all swimming further, taking an 80km route - some of it is similar to where the cyclists in the song "Op Fietse" by "Skik" rode, although not crossing the German border (also a smart route as the Germans would probably have just got out their shotguns and rifles and made room in the freezer, thinking "we can save €60 for Christmas dinner").
in any case the canals go back into Drenthe and then across to Groningen. Unfortunately (as this is a very long journey for a goose) some just keeled over from exhaustion, and others flew near to the snelweg (fast roads, there are a few in that area) and were knocked down by cars
In September, Trizin decided to catch the remaining geese and take them back in his customised dierenambulance (it has a trailer for recovering large numbers of birds) and they have now joined the rest at the Ganzenparadijs :)

UK : East : My friends have got these at home They are being kept in their house as they are too young to go on the farm (they will be taken up there in 2 weeks...)
I think they were bred from the Emdens they had last year...
Doggy discrimination :( Dear sir /madam
Staffordshire Bull Terrier
I have been informed that a staffordshire Bull terrier is being kept at number (
) in contravention to the house rules. Dogs may be kept at the building with the freeholders consent. No application has been made for this animal.
The breed is not considered suitable for living in the confines of a small private flat so I can inform you that permission is unlikely to be granted . Furthermore the dog has been seen on the grounds unleashed. Dogs of this type are perceived as being dangerous and a number of residents have expressed their concerns about the safety of our children using the grounds and common ways when the animal is at large. Please can you make sure that it is removed immediately.
A quick google search will show you that staffies are not amongst the top ten dogs most likely to bite you:
Top 10 Dog Breeds that Bite the Most - List Dose
Unfortunately we didn't check up on the freeholder (the big company that run the building of flats) and went only to my landlord (who granted permission )
I have spoke to by next door neighbour who has printed a letter for me in response to the above stating the dog is perfectly behaved and he feels the claim is malicious and groundless.
Later today as Jay walked bruno, he saw a couple watching him out their balcony and thought 'ffs !' a few minutes later an old man knocks on the doors saying ' I here you have had a complaint about your new dog and if you need support my wife and I will write a letter for you.
Now, word on the grapevine is the woman who complained is the owner of a springer spainial who is a nervous wreck and never allowed to mix with other dogs. It also bark wildly at anything with wheels (like my pushchair )

Does anyone have any advise how I should go about this ? *cough* gl *cough*
This is such a bummer, If I am forced to remove the dog, I will just move to another place and deal with the money issues. Hes not a commodity and another move may well traumatize him.
Oh also the RSPCA do not re-home staffys, they get destroyed even if they are a few months old :(12
UK/LDN : British zoo employs "birds and bees consultant"…. Not a bad idea and surprisingly progressive for Britain (where sex education for children still lags behind that given to much of Northern Europe, and even today some parents are not willing to discuss it with their own offspring)
Even in my own childhood some of the faith based schools I went to (Christian ones) would not sing "A mouse in a windmill in old Amsterdam" as that (in both UK and NL versions) discusses how two mice lead to a lot more... (even though the mouse couple were happily married)

US : Chimpanzee wins $10 000 prize for modern art
TBH its better than some humans modern art I have seen...
A painting by a 37-year-old chimpanzee has won $10,000 (£6,450) for a Chimp Haven sanctuary in north-west Louisiana. The primate, who uses his tongue to apply colour instead of a brush, received the most votes in the chimpanzee art contest organised by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Five other sanctuaries competed, using paintings created during "enrichment sessions", but Brent's delicate smears of blue, violet, yellow and turquoise triumphed before the judge.
Renowned primatologist and conservationist Jane Goodhall picked her favourite piece from the selection of entries, which were voted for by 27,000 online participants. Runners-up included the former performance monkey Patti, who painted with urgent swipes of primary colours; Jamie, who escaped from a lifetime of biomedical research to create an abstract image in violet and pink; and former lab monkey Cheetah, whose burst of hot reds and yellows earned him second place.

Python kills two children MONTREAL, Quebec: An escaped python killed two children in their sleep in eastern Canada, police said on Monday.
The two young boys, aged five and seven, were sleeping at a friend's apartment late Sunday in the small town of Campbellton when they were surprised by the snake.
It had escaped from a pet store that specialized in exotic animals located on the floor below the apartment.
"The preliminary investigation has led police to believe that a large exotic snake had escaped its enclosure at the store sometime overnight, and got into the ventilation system, then into the upstairs apartment," police said in a statement.
"It's believed the two boys were strangled by the snake."
A New Brunswick police spokesman declined to give further details on the size of the snake or whether signs of strangulation were apparent on the boys.
Authorities late Monday said they were still waiting for the results of the autopsies — to be carried out on Tuesday — to determine the cause of death.
But reptile experts expressed skepticism over the incident, saying it would be extremely rare for a constrictor to attack two young boys.
"It's difficult to believe," said David Rogrigue, director of Montreal's Ecomuseum Zoo.
This type of accident would be "an isolated case and very, very extraordinary, and very improbable," he said.
These snakes typically bite to defend themselves and use strangulation solely for their prey.
"Strangling is really linked to the feeding of the animal," he said, explaining the behavior "is stimulated by hunger and by the odor of the prey."
The python had been recaptured and was being held by police, authorities said.
The incident sparked strong reactions in Campbellton, a town of just over 7,000 people on Chaleur Bay in northern New Brunswick.
Deputy mayor Ian Comeau expressed sorrow over the accident and noted that there had been opposition to the presence of the exotic pet store in the town. He pledged the city ordinance that allowed it would immediately come under review.
This is just terrible. I find it strange that the snake didn't eat the boys after. Maybe it is the same as with domesticated cats who will hnt and kill birds but not eat them after because they have forgot what their hunting instinct is for. So they just kill and think "sooo what now"
UK : Scot : Geese are greatest threat to crofters. Geese could end an entire way of life on the Western Isles, according to the Scottish Crofting Federation (SCF).
The organisation said the birds posed the "greatest threat" to the future of crofting on the islands by damaging crops and grazing.
SCF has raised an online petition with the Scottish Parliament urging the Scottish government to do more to control geese numbers.

India bans dolphin captivity. India Bans Captive Dolphin Shows as 'Morally Unacceptable' | Environment News Service
India have made dolphin shows illegal as they deem it morally unacceptable.
“Whereas cetaceans in general are highly intelligent and sensitive, and various scientists who have researched dolphin behavior have suggested that the unusually high intelligence; as compared to other animals means that dolphin should be seen as ‘non-human persons’ and as such should have their own specific rights and is morally unacceptable to keep them captive for entertainment purpose,” the ministry said.12
