You might not realize it while you’re frying them sunny side up on a Sunday morning, but chicken eggs (and those of other birds, and reptiles) are some pretty sophisticated pieces of packaging.
Hard-shelled bird eggs contain albumen, or “egg white,” and a yolk. The fertilized egg cell, or embryo, develops within the yolk and feeds off of it and the white. The baby bird has shelter, food, almost everything it needs inside the egg; except, it seems, a little fresh air.
Animals that develop inside their mothers, like mammals, get their oxygen from mom through the umbilical cord. A bird in an egg doesn’t have as obvious a way to take in oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide, but the egg, again, takes care of things.
Directly under the egg's shell are two membranes. When the eggs are laid by the mother they’re very warm, and as they cool the material inside the egg shrinks a little bit. The two membranes pull apart a little and create a small pocket or sack of air. As the developing bird grows, it breathes in oxygen from the air sack and exhales carbon dioxide. Several thousand microscopic pores all over the surface of the egg allow the CO2 to escape and fresh air to get in.
These pores also allow moisture to get into the egg to keep developing bird and the egg parts from drying out, which is why hard-boiled eggs always feel a little heavier than raw ones.

A giant species of slug, which has attacked crops in mainland Europe and eats dead mammals, has been identified in the UK for the first time in a Norwich garden.
Scientist Dr Ian Bedford spotted the Spanish slug, also known as arion vulgaris, on the outskirts of Norwich.
Dr Bedford, head of entomology at the John Innes Centre, has had his findings confirmed by Aberdeen University.
"The presence of this aggressive species is bad news," he said.
The Spanish slug can lay up to 400 eggs each and has few predators.

UK : East : Border collie teaches kids to throw rubbish in bins. A dog which collects rubbish and places it in bins is helping with an anti-litter campaign.
Megan, a six-year-old border collie, picks up cans, cardboard and even glass while on walks with her owner Ken Pople, of Little Cornard, near Sudbury.
He said that Megan would help to relay the anti-litter message to young people in a way that adults could not.
"She actually went up to a group of youngsters on the meadow and one had thrown a can," he said. "She picked the can up, ran away with it and put it in the bin.
"One of the lads said 'I don't believe that'. When they left they put the other cans in the bin and gave me the thumbs up."

Her son Paul Amner said: “My father worked on a farm in Chelmondiston all his life and both he and mum were brought up around Suffolk Punch horses.
“Because she’s not well enough to get out and about and travel over to Little Horkesley, which is where the horse is kept, we thought we’d bring one to her.”
