UK : SE : OAP pays decimal debt 38 years later This shop is like a real life "are you being served" type place where they still use hand written sales slips and pneumatic tube cash delivery! its one of the few things in Reading worth preserving..
A shop that mistakenly undercharged a woman for blankets on "Decimal Day" has been reimbursed - 38 years later.
Sylvia Blampey, 77, from Paignton, Devon moved to Berkshire in 1971 to take up a new job and bought the blankets for her unfurnished house.
The assistant wrongly calculated the conversion from pounds, shillings and pence to decimal, but Mrs Blampey stayed quiet "because I was poor".
E Jackson and Sons in Reading has donated the £20 to charity.

The Sun: Mouse toy in ‘paedo’ song ban A TOY mouse supposed to sing "Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells" has been recalled amid claims it warbles "paedophile, paedophile".
The 4ins festive novelty, with Santa hat and a cheesy grin, has left parents stunned.
One mum said: "When I squeezed its tummy I couldn't believe my ears. I recognised the tune, but the words were certainly not traditional. Luckily my children are too young to understand."
The £2.99 Chinese-made novelty is sold in smaller shops and on market stalls. Distributors Humatt, of Ferndown, Dorset, said the man providing the voice could not pronounce certain sounds. His singing was then speeded up to make it higher-pitched - distorting the result further.
A spokesman insisted: "We've slowed the song down and it definitely says Jingle Bells. But we have recalled them now just in case anybody might take offence."

Complaint on G20 death ‘cover-up’ The family of Ian Tomlinson has made a fresh complaint to the Independent Police Complaints Commission about a police "cover-up" following his death.
Mr Tomlinson, 47, died after he was struck with a baton and pushed to the ground by a police officer during G20 protests in London on 1 April.
His stepson Paul King, 26, has raised a series of examples which he claims show the public were misled after the death.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said they were unable to comment.
One officer has already been questioned on suspicion of manslaughter.
The family made a complaint about the death after video footage emerged of him being hit with a baton.
We are asking the IPCC for a full report on what looks like a cover-up
Paul King
Mr King said: "The first statement from the police was that they were trying to save Ian's life while protesters were throwing missiles at them.
"Then the police liaison officer told us Ian died of 'natural causes'.
"After the video came out, the City of London investigator told us that it may have been a protester in disguise who assaulted Ian.
"Now it has come to light that a senior officer in the Metropolitan Police has given the investigation misleading information."
He added: "We are asking the IPCC for a full report on what looks like a cover-up."
Candlelit vigil
The Tomlinson family solicitor said he hoped charges would be brought over the incident "sooner rather than later".
The IPCC have confirmed they are investigating information released to the media by police after Mr Tomlinson's death.
His family will hold a candlelit vigil on Tuesday night off Threadneedle Street in the City, where he collapsed.
Mr Tomlinson was a newspaper seller who was walking home past the protests when he was struck by the officer.
Two post-mortem examinations found the 47-year-old's death may have been due to a heart attack or abdominal bleeding.

Scary stuff this, seems like the police/politicians/old boys network are doing everything they can to minimise the damage to the force rather than pursuing justice of any kind for the family. The very fact they haven't charged the officer who hit him with anything in 8 months is deeply worrying.

UK : East : 19 yr old sectioned after torching Stowmarket Squat I'm glad he's in the can where he belongs (he is lucky that he has got hospital and not just prison) as those squatters are friends of my friends! IMO they should detain people with mental health problems (in hospital) a lot sooner, as soon as their illness makes them commit criminal acts against others - at least until it is proven they can tell right from wrong.
Perhaps those places like Severalls weren't such a bad idea after all?
STOWMARKET: A teenager who suffers from schizophrenia is today under the care of mental health services after endangering lives by starting a fire.
James Dent, 19, of no fixed address, admitted he started the blaze at the house in Finborough Road, Stowmarket - owned by the Church of England - where six squatters were sleeping in July last year.
It was heard at Ipswich Crown Court yesterday that on July 29, last year, the squatters had gone to bed some time between midnight and 4am. At 9.30am some of them were woken by a fire alarm and managed to put out the fire quickly.
The court heard that the fire had been started by lighting oil-soaker paper wrappings inside bin bags in a downstairs room. Two fire crews were sent to the scene and a police helicopter was also despatched.
Prosecuting, Matthew Edwards said there had been an allegation that Dent had stolen some vinyl records from one of the squatters.
He said: “At least one of the individuals was not woken by the alarm. They were still asleep when the fire took hold. In interview the defendant [Dent] acknowledged starting the fire and admitted being fully aware of his actions.”
The fire did not cause much damage and was put out by some of the occupants using blankets. The defendant was later seen standing bare-chested opposite the squat, holding a bread knife.
He was arrested and taken to the police station, where it was heard he spat at an officer and smeared excrement on the cell wall.
At the time he was on bail for other offences, which he pleaded guilty to, including possession of cannabis, attempted theft of a motor vehicle and two counts of criminal damage, which took place between April 19 and July 20, 2008.
The court also heard that he has previous convictions for a number of offences, including possessing an offensive weapon, and suffers from schizophrenia.
Judge David Goodin said: “You are beset by voices telling you to harm others. In view of what you did at the squat where there were half a dozen people, and your background, there is no doubt you present a serious danger to the public by virtue of your mental illness.”
Judge Goodin made an order to detain him under the mental health act at a hospital.
