English Defence League and Unite Against Fascism held protest's in the same places.
You couldn't move for police, the atmosphere was very tense.

A father and son suspected of being white supremacists have pleaded not guilty to terrorism offences.
Former pub DJ Ian Davison, 41, and his son Nicky, 18, were arrested by anti-terror police in County Durham in June.
The father was remanded in custody by Newcastle Crown Court after denying preparing for acts of terrorism and producing a chemical weapon.
His son was released on bail after pleading not guilty to two counts of possessing terrorist training manuals.
Ian Davison, of Myrtle Grove, Burnopfield, is also accused of possession of a prohibited weapon and three counts of possessing electronic copies of The Anarchist Cookbook, The Kitchen Complete manual and the Mujahideen Explosives Handbook.

Leeds Bin Strike Action/General Strike Discussion Leeds Refuse Collectors are on their 3rd strike now into 10 days, because of failed talks between the 3 unions Unite/GMB/Unison and Leeds City Council, run by a Tory/Lib Dem coalition.
Basically the Council wants to cut pay by upto £6000 by 2011. The reason for this is "equality" - to create equal pay for men and women. However instead of increasing womens pay, they are cutting mens pay, from £18,000 to £13,000 on average. Unions support equal pay for both genders, however not by reducing existing pay, instead increasing womens pay.
Basically, being Yorkshire there is a lot of solidarity with the strikers. It's getting a bit heated:

It's all a bit 1979, no? Looks like we're doing a circle back to complete communication failure between workers and management. This, the Royal Mail strikes, the Vestas strikes... I agree with all these strikes though. They all have legitimate reasons to be doing so. And as with the Leeds bin strike, talks were tried but often broke down because of lack of compromise from the management.

When a friend sent me a link to this new campaign AIDS is a Mass Murder I didn’t know how I felt about it. I was definitely shocked. If you want to be shocked too, stop reading and check out the campaign. If you don't mind a genocidal spoiler or two, read on.
The campaign includes a video, three posters (one shown on the right), a radio spot and a music video featuring “the greatest mass murderers in recent history having sex.” Here’s how the creators explain the campaign on the official website:
Our campaign to mark World AIDS Day 2009 speaks in clear terms: the new slogan is "AIDS is a mass murderer". The few mass murderers who have claimed a similar number of human lives are shown: Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin and Saddam Hussein. The campaign is designed to shake people up, to bring the topic of AIDS back to centre stage, and to reverse the trend of unprotected sexual intercourse. Because anyone can become infected.
At first I think it was just the video of Hitler having sex that freaked me out. But as I began to think about it the problems (and ultimate ineffectiveness) of the images and the campaign I realized that they go beyond what some people might consider bad taste.
First off, it’s not an apt metaphor. The mass murderers referenced in the ads all had plans and rationales for their killing. HIV/AIDS doesn’t have a plan; it doesn’t have a reason or vision of a world without people who have unprotected sex. These images may shock and may jar you into thinking about them, but the thoughts don't go far because the images don’t really make sense.
Which is not to say that HIV is random. We know that HIV rates and deaths associated with AIDS are far from random, related to race, class, gender and caused by the staggering health disparities across the globe and even across a given city or country. If the point of the campaign was to highlight the fact that when HIV leads to death it does so in a way that is linked to things like race and class, where you live and what you have, then images like these could have been appropriate.
But this campaign is just about getting people to use condoms. This leaves the images as having little more than shock value to recommend them.
On the one hand I kind of want to appreciate every attempt to add to this conversation, and I know how much work goes into these campaigns (and that in this case it was all volunteer). On the other hand I feel like it’s kind of lousy for them to use the images of these particular men. If I had a family member killed during Saddaam Hussein’s regime because they were a journalist, an artist, or maybe a teacher, I think I’d be pretty angry about these ads. I might feel like people have a choice to use a condom, but my family member didn’t have a choice. I’d probably feel like this was a pretty disrespectful way to get some media attention. Actually I do kind of feel that way.

UK – London – Murder of Muslim at a Mosque The family of a pensioner killed as his granddaughter looked on have have told of their "devastation" at his loss.
Ekram Haque, 65, a retired care worker, was attacked on 31 August in Church Lane, Tooting, as he left a mosque.
His son Arfan Haque said his father was a "gentle giant" and added he was very close to his granddaughter, aged five.
Two boys aged 14 and a 15-year-old have been charged with murder. All three are due to appear at Sutton Youth Court on 6 October.
The two 14-year-olds and the 15-year-old face an additional charge of attempted grievous bodily harm on two other pensioners, a man and a woman, on 26 August in Tooting.
Another boy, aged 12, has been charged with conspiracy to commit GBH in connection with the alleged attacks on two men, one in his 40s and the other in his 70s, in Church Lane.
My view is of absolute disgust, because of the children's age, I mean the lowest age is only 5 years younger than me, and the oldest is a mere 2 years younger than myself.
I don't understand what drives someone of those ages to commit a murder on a random person. What disgusts me even more, is that it seems to be a racially incited murder, and my cousin of the same age as me, has both muslim parents and is himself half pakistani and half english. It actually hurts to think about how much of a hell hole England is becoming.
When i was that age, I had better things to do... and would never have even for a moment seriously thought about killing another person.

Absolute Hypocrites!! Unite Against Fascism. This group must be the biggest load of hypocrites ever. have just seen a news item on-line about how they successfully stopped a BNP event from occurring.
Even saw how they verbally abused some BNP members who were with their young families, I thought it was very reminiscent of 1930's Germany but with UAF acting like the Nazis. The way they harassed em was disgusting.
Don't get me wrong i don't support the BNP (I'm a green man) but they (bnp) are a democratically elected group and afaik we live in a democracy, If they want to have a little get together then let em. That's what democracy is all about ain't it.
But when you get a group claiming to be against fascism but then act in a fascist manner themselves then i find that to be very hypocritical indeed. They seem to be a group that says their policy is disagree with us and you are an enemy

UK : Mids : Man to be sentenced over hospital suicide Having seen my own father deteriorate from terminal illness I've got sympathy for both of them but there are other less dramatic ways of ending life with less risk and trauma...But IMO if Dad really felt shooting himself was the best way out from what was probably a painful and distressing condition he should have done so away from the NHS hospital facilities as its not fair on hospital workers etc (and why spend time and resources treating him if he is only going to end his own life?)
it also does seem a bit chilling in these days of deteriorating social cohesion that an otherwise middle class law abiding citizen has gone to all the effort of obtaining an illegal firearm - if he can get guns like that what else might he have been planning to d with them? As an aside, the weapon used was the pistol best known in this country for being associated with James Bond!

A music teacher, who admitted giving his father a gun so he could shoot himself dead in hospital, is due to be sentenced at Leicester Crown Court.
Guy Button handed the Walther PPK handgun to his 63-year-old father Ian, who was terminally ill, in a packed ward at Northampton General Hospital on October 20 last year.
The 30-year-old, of Princes Risborough in Buckinghamshire, earlier admitted two charges of possessing an illegal firearm.
He also pleaded guilty to two charges of passing an illegal firearm on to his father Ian.
Once Mr Button's father had been handed the gun, he drew the curtain round his bed before shooting himself in the head.

A SUSPECTED burglar is in a critical condition in hospital after suffering severe burns during a break-in at a derelict factory in a Suffolk village.
The man, who is in his 20s and is from the Stanton area, is believed to have been involved in the burglary at a disused food factory in Grove Lane, Elmswell, on Thursday evening.
Police were called to the site at 7.30pm by engineers who had been sent there after a power cut was reported.
A police spokesman said: “The factory had been broken into and there were signs of a power surge. Police want to speak to anyone who was in the area yesterday evening and may have seen any suspicious persons or vehicles nearby.
“A male in his 20s was admitted to the West Suffolk Hospital last night with serious burns and has been transferred to Broomfield Hospital where he is in a critical but stable condition.”
