UK : Scot : Royal Navy prangs a £5m sub due to tracing paper WTF?
Why not protect the chart with transparent acetate film, readily available from any office supplies place? (there's an idea maybe Cliffy could use for his interview )
Quote:
A nuclear-powered Royal Navy submarine needed £5m worth of repairs after it struck the seabed because a piece of tracing paper covered its navigational chart, investigators have found.
The tracing paper had been used on the chart to protect it from being written on, obscuring vital information.

‘Freedom To Protest’ Demonstration, 18th May Edin. A peaceful demonstration is planned to assert our right to freely protest without fear. It will be held at 12pm on the 18th of May at Parliament Square, as a response to the campaign of harassment and intimidation which Lothian and Borders Police is directing at peaceful protsters in Edinburgh. Such repression violates human rights and, if it continues, it will stifle popular participation in civil society. The demonstration is also in solidarity with the dozens of working class people who are oppressed by the Edinburgh 'justice' system every day.
Police Harrasment in Edinburgh
On 15th April five people in the political performance art group, Edinburgh Rebel Clowns, were surrounded by police at a demonstration against the use of biofuels [1] and detained for questioning; they were investigating numerous protests that they claimed had happened in Edinburgh over the previous months. They were later charged with a 'breach of the peace' for behaving like clowns at the biofuels demonstration, despite eye witnesses reporting that they were friendly and entertaining.
While they were in custody, one woman was singled out, interviewed for two hours and kept in solitary confinement. When she was returned to the cell with her friends, she started vomiting From stress.
Sophie Bastable, 20, an Edinburgh University student and member of the rebel clown group said "We were targeted for no apparent reason other than dressing up as clowns and having political opinions. We had no idea that participating in a peaceful demonstration against biofuels could result in arbritrary arrest, and were shocked when we were detained without warning by lothian and borders police."
Today, the 12th May, Peter Wyszomirfki a 27 year old artist and Edinburgh resident was physically assaulted, and went to the police to report it: "After giving my statement another officer came into the room, he was very intimidating and accusatory saying: I know you, you were at the protest at the Quartermile [2]. He showed me photographs and asked me loads of questions about people and events that I knew nothing about. He also said that the clowns are dangerous people, and that I shouldn't join them".
There have also been several early morning detentions of environmental campaigners. On Friday march 28th, three individuals were detained for questioning at the same time; they were woken up, and taken from their bedrooms with only just enough time to get dressed, then held and questioned for four and a half hours.
Oliver Munnion, 23, an Environmental Science student at Edinburgh University said "it's important to remind the police that they are public servants, and accountable for their actions. Their tactics of intimidation are reminiscent of more oppressive regimes."
Several environmental campaigners have been contacted by the police and offered money in exchange for information about past and future demonstrations in Edinburgh.
Our Demands
Not only are the Police acting in a way which contradicts their obligations to Article 10, and Article 11 of the European Convention of Human Rights; they are suppressing political protest, and if such activities continue, there will be detrimental consequences for popular participation in civil society.
In light of this we have the following demands:
We demand that the Lothian and Borders Police end the intimidation of peaceful protests.
We demand that harassment in the guise of 'evidence gathering' is stopped.
We demand that our human right to freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and association be respected.
We demand that people in police custody are treated with respect and dignity
We make these demands in solidarity with millions of people around the world whose rights are infringed upon by unjust governments and oppressive police forces; and in solidarity with the dozens of working classpeople every day who are subjected to the violence of Edinburgh's 'justice' system, people who are treated without dignity or respect by the police or the court.
We call upon every freedom loving person to come out and demonstrate at 12pm on the 18th of May at Parliament Square [3], to assert our freedom to protest, and to ensure that these rights are not eroded by aggressive policing.

UK : East : Crime down in suffolk (apart from drunken violence) CRIME in Suffolk is falling, with almost 3,000 fewer offences in the past 12 months compared to the previous year, new figures have revealed.
Many categories of crime, including violence, criminal damage and vehicle offences, saw a drop during 2007/08 - but the number of alcohol-related offences rose by 13.5per cent (452 offences).
no great surprise here
feds have locked down all the parties, drugs etc so there are less instances of small posession or low level dealing, but I think a lot of youths what would have gone free partying are now going to commercial venues like Liquid / Fire and Fight etc or just binge drinking and they are angry to start with because the real fun things are gone, so with a few drinks inside them hardly surprising it kicks off..
I expect the "legit" clubs/pubs will be next in line for a clampdown, its gonna be harsh for the younger people who take late licensing hours for granted..
I suppose one positive thing is it looks like the cops are getting to trouble before it escalates but that also shows that in places like Ipswich that CCTV and surveillance are actually working...

Police will not break up illegal raves because darkness is a health and safety risk Read this in the daily mail today (shock horror yes i read the daily mail!)
Anyway made me laugh!!
A police force has sparked fury by admitting it is powerless to break up illegal raves - because it's too dark when the party is in full swing.
Chief Inspector Gill Ellis, of Kent Police, blamed the lack of action on "health and safety" regulations when tackled by locals whose lives are blighted by the noisy all-night drug-fests in a wooded property around Sevenoaks.
Chief Supt Ellis told a meeting of concerned residents that it was not safe to disperse revellers in remote locations when it was dark - insisting safety regulations meant officers had to wait until sunrise to break up the bashes.
And the force said it could be dangerous to disperse ravers because they may get into their cars to drive home while still high on drink and drugs.
But one district councillor pointed out a bash in March, which took place at Longspring Woods near the village of Shoreham, had been allowed to go on until 1pm the following afternoon - keeping villagers awake all night.
People living in surrounding villages, many of them elderly, had tackled police over the problem because they were fed up with ear-splitting dance music and open drug taking.
Chief Supt Ellis told the meeting: "We will wait until daylight hours for reasons of health and safety before making interventions."
But baffled Sevenoaks district councillor Colin Dibsdall said a rave in March had not been dispersed until after lunch the day after it began.
He said today: "I would have thought once daylight came they could have gone into the site and turned it down or off."
Scroll down for more...
Officers will have to wait until sunrise to break up the bashes
Cllr Phil Hobson, an IT consultant in his early 50s, said: "It's ridiculous that a rave would be allowed to go on all night and into the afternoon.
"Several residents were calling our local police contact, but a number of them could not even get through. As a result the police have logged about six calls, but I know there were plenty more.
"The biggest problem is lack of sleep. On that night there were probably about 500 people who were kept awake.
"There about 1,000 dwellings in the vicinity that could be effected at any given time, depending on the direction of the wind.
"What the police told us is if a rave is happening and they don't know about it significantly in advance they can't get the man power there to stop it.
"I think it is disgusting. The police are there to catch criminals and stop illegal activity.
"We know some people came from as far away as Somerset which means that they must have had several hours' notice about the rave.
"So why then, with so called 'Intelligence Led Policing' which has replaced officers on the street, are they not able to find out about them?
"The ravers sometimes leave a mess of rubbish on the property, which is believed to be owned by a landlord who lives somewhere else in the country.
"The wood is close to the M25 - which means about 15 million people live within an hour and a half's drive away."
Pensioner Beryl Carman, 61, said: "All night it is just 'boom, boom, boom'. We don't even live that close to the woods and we can hear the music loud and clear.
"I have lived her for 29 years - but we have only had this problem for the last few. We have had quite enough of it."
Retired engineer Clive Evans, 66, said: "We couldn't believe what the police came out with - I've never heard so much rubbish in all my life.
"How on earth can fully trained police officers be worried about forcing a bunch of hippies and druggies to go home? "What sort of thing did they expect to have to do when they signed up for the police force?"
The Burmese Crisis. WTF is going on in Burma? Tens of thousands have died and it seems like the ruling junta don't care. They've denied relief workers into the country but welcome aid. They also seized quite a substantial amount of food packages and water which were meant for the victims of the cyclone.
Now these are the sorts of fuckers that are prime candidates for a 'regime' change!!
check this out as well.

Norfolk Raves Up for Debate Well It would seem that Norfolk raves are now now longer just news but actively discussed in parliament.
Quote:
I am most grateful for the opportunity to raise concern about unlicensed music events known as raves, which are causing huge distress, damage and expense in my constituency. Throughout the summer months they have become a regular feature, and in the past few weeks, residents in Marham, Narborough and Cockley Cley have suffered. Unlicensed music events are hugely profitable to the organisers, and they have nothing to do with the altruistic values of young people. They are a product of a get-rich quick formula that tramples on the rural economy. Costs are minimised, no tax is paid, and there is no regard for anyone or anything but the profit made.

4Chan/Anonymous/ROFLcon etc. What does everybody make of this whole internet society type business? I thought it was just a geek thing but Anonymous caused quite a stir when they discredited Scientology.
I don't really understand how it all works, is it still geeky, or is the idea that the internet can make a change finally happening?
Either way, the ROFLCon video's are just cringeworthy, people shouting "fail" at people. Made me cringe. I don't know anything about these sites or groups, and I hear their names more and more.

UK : East : Felixstowe is being evacuated! As we go into world War III we are still dealing with the effects of World War II..

MORE than a thousand residents are tonight being told to evacuate their homes after a huge war-time bomb was washed up on the beach at Felixstowe.
The 250lb Second World War shell was swept on to the beach by wind-lashed waves over the weekend - and spotted by a workman who accidentally scooped it up in his digger bucket.
Police set up a half-mile exclusion zone today along the seaside of Langer Road, between Under Cliff Road West and Manor Road, pending an assessment by a Royal Navy Bomb Disposal Squad.12
Teachers Strike – Opinions? (if this sounds like it is directed at a person, it's cos i posted it on squatjuice first!)
Teachers have had 3 years of pay rises below the rate of inflation. It is NOT a well paid job, yet one of the most important. The NUT still has significant power, and good on them. I don't think this strike is unreasonable.
Also, for anyone who knows what the teaching job involves... do you think their day is 9-3.30 like the pupils? Do you have any idea how much planning and out-of-hours unpaid work they put in towards their job? They do it because they love teaching, but they should be paid fairly too!
I wasn't some do-gooder at school. I was suspended over 30 times resulting in a 6 month exclusion. But I can still appreciate the good job teachers do, perhaps even more so after all the effort they put in with me.
