For those of you that don’t drive, pass it on anyway… See what you think and pass it on if you agree with it
We are hitting 98 p a litre in some areas now, soon we will be faced with paying £1 a ltr. Philip Hollsworth offered this good idea:
This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the 'don't buy petrol on a certain day campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT,whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work.
Please read it and join in!
Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP, we need to take aggressive action to teach them thatBUYERS control the market place not sellers. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their Petrol!
And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves.
Here's the idea:
For the rest of this year DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP.
If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!
Now, don't wimp out on me at this point... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!
I am sending this note to a lot of people. If each of you send i t to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it...
THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!
Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all (and not buy at ESSO/BP) How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8days!
Acting together we can make a difference If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.
PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE 69p a LITRE RANGE
It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Shell, Asda,Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons Jet etc. i.e.boycott BP and Esso...12
Finland in shock after highschool shooting That's very close to home all of a sudden..
Will not say I'm surprised though, things like this can happen everywhere..
But it's terrible it happens at all
My thoughts goes out to all the people involved :group_hug

The Finnish village of Jokela, where an 18-year-old gunman killed eight people and himself at a high school on Wednesday, was quiet as night fell, with friends and family of the dead and injured in deep shock.
Candles could be seen burning in many windows - a Finnish traditional mark of respect for the dead.
"This is a peaceful place, nothing like this has happened and nothing like this is to be expected either," Tuusula mayor Hannu Joensivu said.
Eight people were confirmed dead in the shooting in southern Finland - one day after a video predicting the mass killings was published on the internet.

Emergency Global Petition for people of Burma I'm never sure that these online petitions ever actually have an effect on anything, but I'll sign it regardless and I think others should too.
I hate the idea of armchair protesting but what's happening over there is pretty savage so consider this "stickied" for the next few days.
I'll also alter your link so it's clickable.
Emergency Global Petition for people of Burma
Quote:
Can we make this sticky?
I think this is worth a few seconds to do:
Dear friends,
The Burmese protests are widening, the international response is building--and the Burmese generals are panicking.
Today, the Burmese junta banned gatherings of more than 5, and sent thousands of troops to take control of the streets -- but still the monks and protesters march. Desperate officers have beaten, tear-gassed and fired on their own people, reportedly shooting five monks in Rangoon.
The next 36 hours are crucial.
Leaders have called for an emergency session of the UN Security Council-- but only a decisive initiative will prevent a massacre like the one from 1988. Already, 75,000 people from 192 countries have signed our emergency global petition.
Please forward this email to others who haven't yet signed--they can click below to add their name, and we'll send an updated petition to the Chinese government and the UN Security Council members every day:
http://www.avaaz.org/en/stand_with_burma/h.php/?cl=20637616
We're calling for UN powers--above all China, which holds the economic strings of the Burmese regime--to apply decisive pressure now to stop the violence, and to broker a peaceful transition. If they fail to do this, the massacres will be sudden.
The protesters have declared they will not back down. The Burmese have showed their courage.
The scenes fill our television screens--now the world must act.
In hope,
Paul, Ricken, Graziela, Ben, Galit and the whole Avaaz team

Emergency Global Petition for people of Burma same issue, different petition::
Quote:
Burma is ruled by one of the most brutal military dictatorships in the
world. For decades the Burmese regime has fought off
pressure--imprisoning elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi and democracy
activists, wiping out thousands of villages in the provinces, bringing
miseries from forced labour to refugee camps.
Last Tuesday Buddhist monks and nuns, revered in Burma, began marching
and chanting prayers. The protests spread—now they're growing by tens of
thousands every day, as ordinary people join in.
Peaceful protesters numbered 20000 on Sat, 30000 Sun, 100000 today. This
week, they could win a new life for their country. In the past, Burma's
military rulers have massacred the demonstrators and crushed democracy.
This time it can be different—but only if we stand with the Burmese.
Global leaders are gathering now in New York for the annual United
Nations summit. In speeches and press interviews, we need them to show
Burma's military junta how grave the consequences will be if they crush
the protesters with violence this time.
Please sign this petition asking the Prime Minister to support the
peaceful protests in Burma through all the means available to his office.

PL : 150 riot-cops bust squatter nuns convent sit-in! RTÉ news report..
it is a surreal situation (the nuns had squatted the place for two years) and there's a big Father Ted factor here but does have worrying overtones...
In todays Europe you unfortunately expect dreadlocked activists or hoodies to end up being herded about by law enforcement, or even minority religions but normally not nuns in a Catholic country (even if they disagree with their masters!)
OK the nuns weren't roughed up, but surely a smaller number of normal police (who in this country would still be armed with pistols!) could have carried out ths operation? Especially in the wake of the events in Burma/Myanmar...
Nuns seeing visions of the Holy Sprit doesn't seem like a particularly outlandish thing for them to be doing (even if unconventional).
Seems like a big show of force of conventional authority to me against all activists...
Rebel nuns evicted in convent raid
Wednesday, 10 October 2007 18:38
Sixty five nuns have been evicted from a convent in Poland after occupying the building for two years in a revolt against the Vatican.
The members of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Family of Bethany cut themselves off from the outside world two years ago in protest at the Roman Catholic Church's decision to replace their mother superior.
The mother superior was at the centre of allegations over her personal behaviour - the Vatican had rejected her claims of visions of the holy spirit.

More than 150 Polish police, some in combat uniform, entered the convent after forcing the door down this afternoon.
Specialist women's units, psychologists, police negotiators, paramedics and Catholic Church representatives also took part in the operation.
It is understood as the police entered the convent, the nuns sang hymns and hurled insults at security forces, according to Polish police spokesman Mariusz Sokolowski.
Police said a former Franciscan monk, Roman Komaryczko, was taken from the convent in handcuffs because of his 'aggressive behaviour'.
One woman was taken away in an ambulance, accompanied by an eight month old baby.

How limited, if at all, do you think freedom of speech should be? I have been thinking about this alot since the BNP recently blanketed a neighborhood near mine with flyers discussing illegal immigration, race etc. There was a huge outrage, and the news was acting like it was worse thing to ever happen. Should hate groups be censored/restricted? Or banned? Is it fair for the media to go after a radical racist group but not go after a radical enviromental group who goes around slashing tires of SUV's?
As much as I disagree and dislike the BNP and other similar groups, I don't think they should be punished, attacked or singled out for airing their views.12
What do U think In the recent light of what has been published in the propaganda media, it has got me thinking.
Is it about evolution rather than revolution...
UK : East : 2007-10-05 : A12, railways to London currently stopped at North Essex nee naw!
A big van with 9kgs of oxyacetylene is alight on the A12 at Marks Tey (near Colchester) (ironically it belonged to the Fire Brigade!).
The driver is thankfully unhurt (and has gone home to recover and must be feeling particularly sheepish) but the A12 is stopped in both directions as are the trains stopped either side of Colchester
As its oxyacetylene Fire and Rescue have put a 24 hour exclusion zone on it (oxy heats itself up and can go kaboom even after the fire is out!)
They've called out the military bomb disposal unit to borrow a robot to help deal with the fire...
If you live in East Anglia and are thinking of travelling south tonight I'd make alternative arrangements...

I’m not surprised parents are worried… found this on the press releases of Thames Valley Police..
This sort of thing IMO shows the true breakdown of British society, its not even running a red light when there is no traffic, this just shows pure contempt for others...
Even if I am just on my bicycle and I encounter a crossing patrol (although its rare for me to be about that early!) I will stop until the lollipop lady/man gives the signal the crossing is clear - IMO its not just being safe but setting an example to all the kids for when they want to use the roads later in life.
Can people now not just spare the few minutes to help the next generation get around safely?
Incidentally Wokingham is a "middle England stronghold" rather than a low-income area..

Police clamp down at school crossings - Wokingham
Thames Valley Police in Wokingham are warning drivers that if they fail to stop at school crossings they could be issued with three penalty points, a fine of up to £1,000 and the loss of their license.
The advice comes after School Crossing Patrollers, or ‘lollipop’ persons as they are better known, complained to Wokingham Borough Council that an increasing number of drivers are failing to stop at crossing patrols.
PC Julian Weal, Road Safety Constable (RSC) for Berkshire, has met with lollipop people and representatives from the council to inform them how they can help the police catch the drivers responsible. All drivers reported to the police will be summonsed to court.
“School Crossing Patrollers carry out a vital role in getting our children to school safely.” said PC Weal. “I want to warn drivers that we are cracking down on drivers who ignore this law and they will be summonsed to court for failing to stop.
“I find it unbelievable that some drivers are so impatient that they will risk the safety of school children rather than wait for two minutes at a school crossing.”
Executive member for highways and transport Cllr Keith Baker said: “The safety of children, parents and school crossing patrollers is of the utmost importance and the council welcomes and supports a clampdown on drivers who ignore the law.”

As the ‘War On Terror’ boils over into a greater regional war across the entire Middle and Near East it is time to move beyond the comfort zone of A-B demonstrations (important as they are) and towards more direct confrontation and opposition to our own illegal military state.
The DAAW message board was initially created in Jan 2003 to protest the arrival of US B52 Bombers to RAF Fairford, U.K, from where Iraq was then carpet-bombed. Since then the message board has become home to a wide range of Direct Action related campaigns and protests.
DAAW is a well moderated e-group. Most events or actions which are asking more than just the signing of another petition, or which are more than another march from point A to point B, will be considered for approval as a form of Direct Action.
