UK : East : Concern over violent crime surge in Suffolk town This town is about 30 miles outside Ipswich.
Me and my mates visit it fairly often to go to Studio 3 (which is a very well run and mostly trouble free venue).
I wouldn't class it as a rough place compared to London or Reading, but other than in Studio 3 I'd be wary to go out on my own at night there (particularly being from an ethnic minority group). If I did I certainly wouldn't casually "talk to strangers" in the street.
I think some got beaten up in that town a few months ago , just because they were from Poland :hopeless:
There is also a worryingly increasingly level of domestic violence (between people known to one another) in this area..
THE mother of a murder victim has voiced her fears over a surge in violent crime in a Suffolk town.
The concern was raised just hours after a 24-year-old man was stabbed in St Andrew's Street North in Bury St Edmunds - the latest in a string of alarming incidents.
Police cordoned off the road and the victim, who is thought to have staggered 50 yards up the street before collapsing, was treated at West Suffolk Hospital before being released last night. Police are questioning two men, aged 23 and 24, in connection with the incident.

The crappiest excuse for joining BNP… ever? Demonstration over BNP councillor
Protesters have gathered outside Corsham town hall after the appointment of a British National Party councillor.
Michael Simpkins, 47, was handed a place on the town council because nobody else stood for election.
Prospective Conservative MP Wilfred Emmanuel Jones said the outcome was a "wake-up call" to everyone.
Mr Simpkins said people in Corsham do want BNP representation because nearly 700 people (13%) voted for the BNP at the last district elections.
Several hundreds of people turned out to protest ahead of Monday night's town council meeting.
The ex-RAF policeman and now taxi driver said he joined the BNP three-years ago as his son was being taught about the Muslim faith at school.
"I'm a Christian, I cannot agree with the religion which is totally against my religion - that doesn't make me a racist - I don't hate Muslims. I don't want to see this country turned in to an Islamic state.
"That doesn't make me racist it just makes me a concerned British citizen."
Mr Simpkins represents the Rudloe ward of Corsham Town Council.

bad enough that he got elected by default... but his justification for joining the BNP???
being taught about other faiths is a good thing. It promotes understanding and reduces conflict. The Muslim faith is not 'totally against Christianity'... muslims include jesus as a muslim prophet, just not their main one.
so he'd rather support a party whose manifesto says that they would arm every citizen to defend their rights against the government :you_crazy and who would introduce forced deportation to people who are not british citizens than have information about various religions be given to his son at school

The rights and wrongs of arming the civilian population The idea of arming the civilian population isnt new ....Orwell also argued that arming the civilians would safeguard democracy.....it was a different world then of course, but i dont think he was actually serious about it, even then..
as to the idea of educating people about other religions, well im not against it... but I was just reading yesterday that a number of educationalists are getting a bit fed up of having their lessons dictated to by goverment ideals for how we should think on a variety of "new labour" agendas, religion being just one.
in the light of mushrooms being outlawed are kids being taught anything about religions where psycoactive drugs are integral? are they being taught the Rastafarian belief that man cannot outlaw marijuana?, or shamanism, or paganism? Maybe some parents here can enlighten me as to whether their kids are being taught about these other religions... or just the ones currently up on the political agenda..
For anyone interested heres the bit about Orwell...
Orwell thought that the Home Guard would make not only a good fighting force against the Germans but would also demonstrate the possibility of achieving 'a democratic People's Army'. In such a force, co-operation among different parts of society would replace the traditional reliance on upper-class leadership and a large, well-armed popular militia would act as a sort of insurance policy against government tyranny at home.
At the end of an article on the Home Guard in Tribune, Orwell wrote: THAT RIFLE HANGING ON THE WALL OF THE WORKING-CLASS FLAT OR LABOURER'S COTTAGE IS THE SYMBOL OF DEMOCRACY. IT IS OUR JOB TO SEE THAT IT STAYS THERE.'

The Milgram experiment at Yale University [yt]ymgfhjQ_sFs[/yt]
Quote:
The Milgram experiment was a seminal series of social psychology experiments conducted by Yale University psychologist Stanley Milgram, which measured the willingness of study participants to obey an authority figure who instructed them to perform acts that conflicted with their personal conscience. Milgram first described his research in 1963 in an article published in the Journal of Abnormal and Social Psychology, and later discussed his findings in greater depth in his 1974 book, Obedience to Authority: An Experimental View.

Hundreds of thousands of protesters are gathering in Germany ahead of tomorrow's G8 meeting of the world's richest nations. The three-day summit is being held in the coastal resort of Heiligendamm. German police have spent $18 million dollars to erect an eight-mile-long, two-meter-high fence around the meeting site. Global warming will be high on the agenda. Going into the meeting, President Bush has proposed to sideline the UN-backed Kyoto Accords and set voluntary targets on reducing emissions of greenhouse gas. Other top issues will include foreign aid and new trade deals.
Today, we spend the hour with a man who claims to have worked deep inside the forces driving corporate globalization. In his first book, “Confessions of an Economic Hit Man”, John Perkins told the story of his work as a highly paid consultant hired to strong-arm leaders into creating policy favorable to the U.S. government and corporations -- what he calls the “corporatocracy.” Perkins says he helped the U.S. cheat poor countries around the globe out of trillions of dollars by lending them more money than they could possibly repay and then taking over their economies.

President Bush has ordered new sanctions to be placed on the Sudanese government for its role in the violence in Darfur. Last week's announcement blocks thirty-one companies tied to the Sudanese government from using the U.S. banking system.
The sanctions were seen as a victory for the Save Darfur Coalition, a U.S. group leading a vocal campaign pressuring the White House to take action. But the New York Times reported Saturday some of Save Darfur's public efforts have angered aid groups working on the ground in Sudan. The aid groups say Save Darfur's call for imposing a no-flight zone could lead to a halt in aid flights and put their workers at risk.
Aid groups have also criticized Save Darfur for not spending its multi-million dollar budget on aid to Darfur's refugees.

Commiserating the 40th Aniversary of the 6th day war DemocracyNow.org covers the ongoing struggle in Palestine on the 40th aniversary of the 6th day war...
Quote:
This week marks the 40th anniversary of the Arab-Israeli War of 1967. The Six-Day War reshaped the map of the Middle East. Israel captured the West Bank and east Jerusalem from Jordan, the Golan Heights from Syria and the Gaza Strip and Sinai peninsula from Egypt. Palestinians living in Gaza and the West Bank have lived under Israeli military occupation ever since.
Today we are going to spend the hour examining the legacy of the Six Day War. Later in the show we will be joined by the Israeli historian Tom Segev who has just published the book “1967: Israel, The War and the Year That Transformed the Middle East.” We will also be joined by the Palestinian doctor and human rights activist Mona El-Farra and the American scholar Norman Finkelstein.
