Robbed station ‘had open windows’
http://news.bbc.co.uk wrote:
A Northern Ireland police station which was targeted by burglars had been left with its windows open and its alarm switched off, it has emerged.
The station in Ballynahinch, County Down, was broken into last month.
Assistant Chief Constable Duncan McCausland told the Policing Board officers went on patrol and forgot to lock up properly. He said that a criminal and disciplinary investigation was under way.
ACC McCausland said the message for police was the same as every other householder - close your windows and switch on the alarm. He said that no police equipment was taken in the break-in at the station, which is currently being renovated.
South Down DUP assembly member Jim Wells commended the police for their honesty over the matter. "Now that I've heard the explanation I must admire the police as they have been totally honest - I would applaud them for that, but what steps are going to be taken to make sure something like this doesn't happen again?" he told the News Letter.
"We were lucky. Whoever broke in was not a hardened criminal or terrorist." He said that if weapons or sesitive documents had fallen into the "wrong hands" there could have been serious repercussions.
:weee: :laugh_at:
I thought the police were the ones who advised us on how to protect our properties....
Also who was the cheek to break into a police station
Parties when Tony Blair fcuks off? Right are there gonna be nationwide celebrations when Blair finally leaves or what?? I don't mean just in forlorn woods and marshes etc, l mean in city centres and the lot?
It's a good idea methinks! Something to eclipse even the millennial celebrations would be nice. As they say around here and any other responsible website, no explicit details of illegal parties please!
The big day:
Wednesday 27th June
I'd be well up for something in the city centre, but apart from that l think i'll just not stop for him!

R.A.F – Free4alternatives @ G8 i amnto sure if i post this on the right place, but i guess the event is politcally enough to be here.
free4later.org, former known as free4euroalernatives, chanaged mision for this year. the struggle against demolition of freespaces and against polcie brutality didn´t loose imortance to us, but for 2007 we put our priority on the g8, simply because we see a chance to move something for the location in the quiet middle/north of europe.
we believe that it is necessary and a bit of a duty that freeparty/freepsaces are represented at the g8. also we hope to mobilize people to come, which would have rather stayed at home.
our site is barely finished, lot of content is still missing, but we keep it daily updated and working on.
for the entire planing of this event we are working with the global network against the g8 via dissentnetwork and all the others which became a quiet genius mashup of different groups for one aim: SHUT DOWN THE G8 !!
we are going to build a tekcamp, a autonomous zone for people to share their resistant art and way of living, to be, to rest, to meet up etc.
this tekcamp is called resistance art festival, cause it will be build with our existing infra structure. one could call it teknival, but it wont be classically like this as we go contacted by so many different artists, so we can provide a multi-art-share-place !
i guess the call doesnt leave much questions open, if there are any, dont hesitate to contact us :)
Free4alternatives
is an activists group coming from the Free Spaces scene (Free Party, Teknival, Squat, Trailer site, TAZ,...)fighting against liberty deprivations and standardization of masses for the right to alternatives and autonomy...
This time we want to mobilize our scene to come to the blockades and protests against the G8 2007 on the 2nd to 8th June in Heiligendamm (Rostock, Germany) by organizing a Free Artistic Space there:
Hello Artivists from all over the world!
Press said that the RAF might come back for G8, it's true!! It's the Resistance Art Festival
We plan to organize an artistic Temporary Autonomous Zone near Heiligendamm during the G8 summit in June from the 2nd (evening) till the end of the blockades. We are several tekno sound systems and demonstration organizers from all over Europe and we'll bring our gigs to Heiligendamm, we are all used to create Free Autonomous Spaces...
Our aim are to offer people a place to rest and to find a new energy to go back to the barricades and to mobilize all the people that wouldn't come without this event (don't laugh it's true, a lot of people would come if they can find also a festival there, it's a reason more to come for them). Our message is in our art (music, video, juggling, painting,...) and we do intend to make noise to be heard! We want people coming back from the barricades to be able to find a place to free their minds and moods from all aggressiveness and to motivate them back with our art...
Moreover the 8 bastards will speak about the copyrights and the distribution networks of art (DRMs, licenses, peer2peer, copy protections,...) so we cannot let them do without showing that Free Art is a reality, that we can do autonomous spaces for free and offering even more than "just" art to the people, and that we refuse their standardization of art and their capitalist way of seeing art in general.. Our art is not to sell!!
We have our own hardware (speakers, amplifiers, trucks, videoprojectors,...) so any artist can come and we'll be glad to accept any collaboration offered...
We are also in contacts with alternative artists from other scenes (rock, rap,...) and trying to arrange concerts too...
We asked for a place but still did not get any answers but even if they don't give us a place we'll take it, we are all used to that and ready to defend our camp... But honestly we don't think they will give a fuck about people dancing when they will have thousands of people trying to break their fucking fence at the same time
We have organized an illegal Teknival with 5000 people in Germany (Baden-Baden) last year (and several ones all over Europe), just after the demonstration we organized on the 15th April 2006 in Strasbourg in front of the European Parliament, and some of our group also organized numerous illegal protests in Berlin (and legal ones too), so we are quite aware of how it goes there in Germany...

School power to search for knives http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/6704563.stm
Schools in England have been given the legal right to search pupils who are suspected of carrying knives. Head teachers will also be given guidance on how to use airport-style metal detectors to screen young people.
The guidelines state that a pupil can be refused entry to a school if he or she refuses to be screened.
Education Secretary Alan Johnson said knife-carrying in schools was rare, but it was illegal and a message it would not be tolerated must be sent out.
He told the BBC: "What happens at the moment is that if a teacher suspects a child of carrying a knife they have to call the police and wait for the police to arrive before that child can be searched - unless the child agrees to be searched.
"By that time any weapon they are carrying may have been passed on."
Under the new guidelines trained staff, authorised by the head teacher, would be able to carry out searches.
Crucially, a search should never take place where there is any risk to staff or pupils.
They also explain how best to screen pupils, suggesting that randomly selected groups of pupils could be searched in order to send out a strong message of deterrence.
But it also sets out limits for schools, in that suspicion has to be reasonable and not based on stereotypical images of certain groups of pupils.
Appropriate training
Two members of staff should be present for a search and both must be the same sex as the pupil.
And students can only be required to remove outer clothing, such as coats or jackets.
Mr Johnson said teachers themselves had asked for the powers but added that the main way to keep knives out of our schools is to continue educating young people about the dangers associated with them.
"I think parents will welcome the clear message that bringing a weapon into school is a criminal offence and will not be tolerated."
But he added: "Let's not exaggerate how our schools look at the moment our schools have a very low proportion with any problem at all with pupils bringing in weapons.
"The Youth Justice Board survey told us that, Ofsted told us that and head teachers and teachers tell her that.
"Lets not exaggerate this into saying our schools are some kind of ghetto from central Manhattan or the Bronx."
National Association of Head Teachers spokesman said it was the job of the police to search individuals for weapons.
'Fully prepared'
"They are trained and have the appropriate body armour.
"Our advice to our members will be to call for police assistance should they suspect that a weapon is being carried."
General secretary of the NASUWT union, Chris Keates, welcomed the new powers, but said searches must be conducted properly by appropriately trained staff.
"However, all schools will still need to consider how they will be incorporated into their policies and procedures to ensure that they are prepared fully should the need arise.
"There is a clear role for local authorities and the local police in supporting and advising schools in this process."
The Teacher Support Network said in the past year its support line had handled 175 calls regarding behaviour management, 30% of which were concerned specifically with violence, abuse and threats.
"Giving teachers facing these issues the power to stop and search pupils may make them feel safer at work though schools must exercise extreme caution," a spokesman added.
i'm not likin how much this country is becomin like america. i've been searched in school (for illegal substances) and they had to get a copper in just to search me, fair enough.
i'll encourage me lil bro to turn around and walk home if they wanna search him!123
Outcry over TV kidney competition
BBC News wrote:
A Dutch reality TV programme in which a terminally ill woman will select one of three patients to receive her kidneys has sparked outcry in the Netherlands.
The government has called for the Big Donor Show to be scrapped because it is "wretched" and unethical, according to reports in the Dutch media.
But broadcaster BNN said the aim was to highlight the acute shortage of organ donors in the Netherlands.
It said the show, from the makers of Big Brother, would go ahead as planned.
The 37-year-old donor has been identified only by the name Lisa.
She will make her choice based on the contestants' history, profile and conversation with their family and friends.
Viewers will also be able to send in their advice by text message during the 80-minute show.
The former director of TV station BNN died from kidney failure and spent years on a waiting list for a kidney transplant.
Does this strike anyone as slightly wrong?
I am amazed at what the TV people will come up with as "entertainment" :you_crazy

CND : PLEASE READ…….. campaign for nuclear disarmament
PLANNING REFORMS ATTEMPT TO STEAMROLLER THROUGH NEW NUCLEAR SITES WITHOUT DEBATE
The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament today expressed its concern that the Planning White Paper will open the way for new-build nuclear power stations to be imposed on communities without any chance for them to engage in the real debates around the safety of plans that will damage their area for centuries.
With no safe means of storage yet found for existing, let alone future waste and the risks of catastrophic pollution from both accidents and terrorism, CND believes nuclear power is simply not worth the risk.
Kate Hudson, Chair of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, said, “It is laughable for Gordon Brown to be speaking of rebuilding public trust and seeking more public engagement on the environment when this announcement will remove rights from the public and place massive decisions in the hands of an unelected and unaccountable commission”.
Many of the decisions to be removed from local scrutiny to the Independent Planning Commission are especially vital when it comes to nuclear new-build. Numerous safety concerns are site specific, with the effects of rising sea levels a potential problem for the many low-lying nuclear sites.
Despite the ‘greenwash’ being applied to this announcement, nuclear power is not the answer to climate change, with the Government’s own Sustainable Development Commission concluding that even with a doubling of nuclear capacity and the resultant waste mountain, British carbon emissions would only drop by 8% compared to the 60% target set by Government. [see note 1] Additionally, a recent report by the highly respected Oxford Research Group notes that due to the increasing scarcity of uranium and the energy-intensive purification process, nuclear power would generate as much CO2 per kilowatt as a gas-fired power station by 2050, assuming the proportion of global power production from nuclear remains static. [see note 2]
Long Term Nuclear Waste Storage
Also announced is a framework for a long term waste storage facility. This is unfortunately a necessary decision, but with the half-life of waste stretching to hundreds of thousands of years one that must be thoroughly considered, not pushed through to encourage private investment in new nuclear build.
Last year the government Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM) reported that given the processes and procedures that have to be undertaken, it would not be possible even to begin the underground burial of radioactive waste until at least 2045, with the burial sites sealed in 2120. Their timeline only deals with existing waste meaning if new nuclear power plants are built additional burial sites will likely have to be found, extending the timeline even further into the future.
Kate Hudson, Chair of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament further commented “The idea that a permanent nuclear waste dump could be imposed on an area with minimal public input – limited to the specifics and not the principled decision, is ghastly. Removing popular and judicial control from a decision to store British civil and military nuclear waste, potentially alongside imported foreign intermediate level waste in a community for thousands of years is profoundly undemocratic. Under this process it will be almost irrelevant whether a community supports or oppose such a development – the Whitehall decision will be implemented regardless”.

EU : what can progressives do in the current climate? this is something that has been worrying me (and maybe others).
I have been monitoring the results of elections in many EU countries recently... particularly FR, NL, DK, DE, all countries geographically and socially close to Britain..
nearly all have had high turnouts but elected centre right candidates despite a history of progressive or at least centre-left government..
and you are seeing anything "alternative" being normalised/squashed if it doesn't fit in with the market economy.. (ungdomshuset, frenchkek>>sarkotek, UK long term squats being evicted etc)
The problem is that it doesn't seem at all like the doomsday scenario of a "descent into fascism" - at least yet..
perhaps more a "descent into mediocrity"; where the society ends up merely led my what I would call a "MittelEuropa" class, where people work hard but don't really play at all and go to bed before 23:00 after only drinking 1 litre of beer maximum..
(it is worryingly like an "idealised" version of Britain a former Prime Minister John Major once made a speech about)..
but it worries me that so many people are making the decision to elect this sort of government and to ultimately accept this sort of society..
So what can us progressives do?
