An Evening with Robert Fisk (04/07/06) "Fisk has been based in the Middle East as the UK Independent's Middle East correspondent for nearly 30 years. He is widely respected as a tireless reporter who strives to get firsthand information and who brings a sense of fairness, knowledge and history to his reporting. His work is based on a moral framework that views war as the "total failure of the human spirit" and journalists as having a duty to report from the perspective of the victims. In a critical look at foreign involvement and intervention in the Middle East, Robert Fisk will explain that the West has learned little from having supported some of the Middle East's most brutal regimes and ruthless policies in pursuit of geo-political interests. Fisk will tell the story of journalists in war: of their attempts to report the first, impartial drafts of history, to monitor the centers of power, to challenge authority and to battle an increasingly partisan worldwide media in their determination to report the truth."

Will print media or standalone media soon have more freedom of speech than the net? been thinking about this for a few days...
its of course possible for authoritarians to burn books, destroy leaflets and smash printing presses...
but that needs lots of jackbooted heavies, and spies to find and stalk the source and distribution routes of the print media, and vehicles, uniforms and weapons...
But online it only takes a few keypresses by one person with the right access levels on the right network - the subversive message will never get through, or could even be automatically filtered by software which can even handle complicated East Asian languages...or its source can be traced to someones home broadband connection within a few seconds..
net censorship is now becoming trivial and commonplace even in the West, passed off as "workplace e-policy" or "parental controls".
But..
"standalone media" such as a book/leaflet, or even a CD/DVD or memory chip containing multimedia is far harder to filter and censor, or for cops to make use of unless someones house is raided (which hopefully doesn't happen that often unless people are careless about drugs...)
you could still use the net to prepare such media, particularly if shared as encrypted fragments of a project between trusted people
TBH stuff like party pics/vids doesn't even need this level of paranoia, its just a matter of going back to "web 1.0" rather than putting the stuff on bait places like youtube and murdochspace...
what does everyone think? could this be the way forward for stuff such as some party pics and info, a way of clawing back some of the lost freedoms?
Sewage spill in the Firth of Forth, Edinburgh Oh Shit!!!! (sorry)

Supreme Court ruling on abortion services
reuters.co.uk wrote:
The U.S. Supreme Court's ruling last week that outlawed a certain abortion procedure could be a first step of greater government intrusion into private medical decisions, doctors said on Monday.
The ruling will also almost certainly intimidate doctors who provide any type of abortion services, according to a series of commentaries in the New England Journal of Medicine.

fucking local rag! a few weeks back, a pupil at our school, who is 14, took a dodgy pill that he thought was e, and went to hospital because he "felt ill". well, it was dealt to him by another pupil who was 15, and this geezer was expelled (the person who took it wasn't even suspended). he was a violent chav cunt anyway, so noone much cared buuuut....
this week the local paper runs a story "DRUGS PUPIL IS SENT HOME" on the front fuckin page (they must have been stuck, cos it aint nowt new).
now it's this daily mail type "name and shame" that pisses me off, and the decision by the headteacher to ring up the press and invite them to run a story on it.
the story had everything apart from the actual names - but in a predominantly rural society, everyone was asking and they found out. the incident had long been forgotten by the students, and the pupils involved could live and learn, and the person who took it was given another chance.
not now. does anyone agree that effectively "naming and shaming" a 14 year old is wrong? the kid doesn't stand a chance now, half the fuckin county know who he is, because the idea of class A drugs being dealt in school (shit shock horror, nowt new really) generated quite a topic of conversation, now the geezers name is everywhere.
and completely immoral by the headteacher to encourage word being spread about the incident, just so he could go on about his "zero tolerance" to drugs and behaviour issues.
i'll scan in the paper and post it ina minute...
am i over-reacting? i wasn't mates with either, but ffs they are 14 and 15, and they are on every newspaper "stand" thing for miles around, people know em by now... tory bullshit area too, not a good attitude towards drugs.
also, it's not as if the area is particularly "good" - hundreds from the school take drugs and people KNOW that. it's just these kids have been marked by the media.
rant over... :weee:
Teachers drop the Holocaust to avoid offending muslims Daily Mail 3 April 2007
Quote:
Schools are dropping the Holocaust from history lessons to avoid offending Muslim pupils, a Governmentbacked study has revealed.
It found some teachers are reluctant to cover the atrocity for fear of upsetting students whose beliefs include Holocaust denial.

usa gun rights right i have been having a debate with some usa friends, about the shooting in the school a few days ago , i happen to open the conversation with , its hardly surprising in a country where yr aloud to own guns that these sort of things go down,
now there all up in arms so to say , saying its still there right to bear arms, and im liberal for thinking like i do.
I'm not blaming the right to bear arms for incidents like this. I was suggesting that a review of the ease with which they can be obtained might be in order. Or are there gun laws perfect?
whats yr veiws on this
Norman Finkelstein & Shlomo Ben-Ami on the the Israeli-Palestinian conflict Listen: http://www.archive.org/download/dn-finkelstein-benami/dn-finkelstein-benami_64kb.mp3
Quote:
A discussion with two of the world's leading experts on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Both of them have new books on the subject. We're joined by Shlomo Ben-Ami, both an insider and a scholar. As Foreign Minister under Ehud Barak, he was a key participant in years of Israel-Palestinian peace talks, including the Camp David and Taba talks in 2000 and 2001. An Oxford-trained historian, he is currently Vice President of the Toledo Peace Centre in Madrid. His new book is called Scars of War, Wounds of Peace: The Israeli-Arab Tragedy. President Bill Clinton says, quote, “Shlomo Ben-Ami worked tirelessly and courageously for peace. His account of what he did and failed to do and where we go from here should be read by everyone who wants a just and lasting resolution.
We're also joined by Norman Finkelstein. He's a professor of political science at DePaul University. His books include A Nation on Trial, which he coauthored with Ruth Bettina Birn, named as a New York Times notable book for 1998. He's also the author of Image and Reality of the Israel-Palestine Conflict and The Holocaust Industry. His latest book is Beyond Chutzpah: On the Misuse of Anti-Semitism and the Abuse of History. His website is NormanFinkelstein.com. Avi Shlaim of Oxford University calls Beyond Chutzpah “Brilliantly illuminating… On display are all the sterling qualities for which Finkelstein has become famous: erudition, originality, spark, meticulous attention to detail, intellectual integrity, courage, and formidable forensic skills.”

right i was wondering why folk get well upset in this polticial section i cant understand why you do , if its of no interest to you why do you read the topics, never mind having a go at the member who placed the topic, without even inputting to the debate,
Cause that seems to be the way with some of the treads on here, the member is slagged and made out hes in some sort of support of the issue, when it was placed as open discussion even to the point where there accused of being racist, or where its something you yr self is maybe bored with, that don't mean that everyone else is.
like we don't live in a world of mushrooms and rainbows , i have been involved in free parties for about 12ys now putting them on and attending them throughout Europe and uk,
but that don't mean that i don't like to talk openly about stuff going on around me, and finding out what other folk think of it, and yes some of it is polticial and some of it is about the actually state of this country. regarding laws, race, police, religion, after all these things are going on in real life
so maybe if its of no interest to you , and you don't have anything to offer to it , that you leave it to those who do want to talk about it, rather than it getting into a slagging members off
end of rant ......goodnight................12
AUSTRALIA denying entry to……………
AUSTRALIA should deny entry to refugees and migrants who carry the HIV virus, Prime Minister John Howard said Friday.Howard, who has tightened immigration rules since taking office more than a decade ago, said he would like more advice on the matter but his initial response was that such applicants should be refused.
"My initial reaction is no (they should not be allowed in)," he told commercial radio.
"There may be some humanitarian considerations that could temper that in certain cases, but, prima facie - no."
Howard said people infected with another illness, tuberculosis, were already prevented from coming to Australia.
His comments follow questions about the rigour of HIV testing among migrants.
Official figures showed the number of people with the AIDS-causing virus moving to Victoria state had quadrupled in the past two years and that some of these people were migrants.
The prime minister said he would consider changing the law to prevent people infected with the virus settling in Australia.
"I think we should have the most stringent possible conditions in relation to that nationwide and I know the health minister is concerned about that and is examining ways of tightening things up," he said.
Australia ran successful HIV/AIDS education campaigns in the 1980s which have kept the disease in check here, but the disease is spreading rapidly in neighbouring Pacific countries such as Papua New Guinea.
Parents and children’s advocates please read and repost! Recently, a very serious problem has been brought to the attention of several members of cafemom. It is a very heinous website called www.puellula.com. This website is a safe haven for pedophiles. The heading on their main page reads, "A Celebration of the Splendor of Little Girls". This website includes links to pictures, or "art" as they call it, of little girls, confessional blogs, a directory of resources for pedophiles (for "both boylovers and girl lovers, as well as anybody else looking for information about pedophilia and consensual child love"), as well as many other links. This site has a manifesto, stating demands to the government to legalize pedophilia.
The most disturbing, though, is a link to a page title Sugar and Spice that is specifically for little girls who have "fallen in love" with a pedophile. This site is set up to draw in little girls. It looks like any other fun little girly page. It tells girls that it is okay to be "in love" with an adult, and it is okay to have sex with an adult. A quote from the page: "Remember that information helps you to make the choices that are right for YOU. Don’t let other people think for you, YOU know yourself better than anybody else, so YOU should be the one to decide whom to love and how to use your mind and your body." It has a questions and answers section, downloads, and a page to links for more information.
If this information doesn't turn your stomach, hopefully what I'm about to say will. This website claims to be legal. There is even a link on their webpage to report them to authorities. Here is a quote from that page: "Are you outraged by what you have just been reading? Do you think that sites like this should be banned? Do you think that, despite the fact that there is nothing illegal on this site whatsoever, its creators should be locked up? Do you support severely curtailing the constitutionally guaranteed right to freedom of speech and the suspension of civil rights in the execution of draconian laws against law-abiding citizens whose worldview happens to be different than yours? If so, you are in good company! This site has already been reported numerous times to a number of law enforcement organizations including the FBI, the RCMP and Interpol. If you are undeterred by the fact that this site is already well-known within the law enforcement community and that it is in no way illegal, and you still want to do your civic duty and exercise your freedom of speech by denouncing the free speech of another citizen, let us help you. Here we have compiled a list of contacts for a number of law enforcement bodies that you might wish to contact. We have even included a form that will allow you to contact several of these agencies at once!"
People, I need your help. I am asking you to do at least one of a few things:
1) Please repost this bulletin. Maybe with the wide circulation that Inked Nation and myspace provide, we can raise awareness, initiate outrage, and get this thing shut down. We fill out and pass on surveys, poems about killing pit bulls, etc. Don't you think this warrants the same kind of attention?
2) Report this site to cybertipline.com, and sign the petition at http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/493662088?ltl=1174125902. You can sign this as "anonymous" if you wish.
3) Make your local authorities aware of this website. Several moms on cafemom have alerted their local authorities and many have been very interested and grateful for the heads-up.
4) Contact your congressman and senator. Another disturbing fact about this site is, at the bottom of their page, they openly support Barack Obama for the presidential election. I am sure Mr. Obama would be very displeased to know of this, therefore I, as well as other moms, have already brought this to his attention. If we can get other senators and congressmen in the know, it very well could initiate talk and possibly action by our government.
5) Send this bulletin, or write your own, to your local media. Just as moms have caught the interest of their local authorities, they have also done so with their local news. Several moms have reported back that their news has hopped on board with this and followed up with research and interviews. This way parents without the resources we have with the internet and myspace can be made aware of this.
6) If the information that I have provided doesn't affect you to your core, then please go to this site so you can see for yourself what we are dealing with here. I guarantee you will be disgusted as much as I.
Again, I am asking for your help with this. If you have a daughter or son, a little sister or brother, niece or nephew, or even just know a child, then you are affected by this. These people are preying on these children. They say that this disgusting behavior is okay. It is not.
If you've made it this far through this bulletin, then I thank you for your time and attention. Just by reading this, you've helped me take one more step to my mission being accomplished. Please, if nothing else, pass this on.
