Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media is a book by Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky, first published in 1988.
Presenting an analysis its authors call the "propaganda model", the book argues that since mass media news outlets are now run by large corporations, they are under the same competitive pressures as other corporations. According to the book, the pressure to create a stable, profitable business invariably distorts the kinds of news items reported, as well as the manner and emphasis in which they are reported. This occurs not as a result of conscious design but simply as a consequence of market selection: those businesses who happen to favor profits over news quality survive, while those that present a more accurate picture of the world tend to become marginalized.
The book further points out issues with the dependency of mass media news outlets upon major sources of news, particularly the government. If a particular outlet is in disfavor with a government, it can be subtly 'shut out', and other outlets given preferential treatment. Since this results in a loss in news leadership, it can also result in a loss of readership/viewership. That can itself result in a loss of advertising revenue, which is the primary income for most of the mass media (newspapers, magazines, television). To minimize the possibilities of lost revenue, therefore, outlets will tend to report news in a tone more favorable to the government and giving unfavorable news about the government less emphasis.

UK : Things…. could nearly have been better…. OK that probably doesn't scan very well and it was a shit pop dance tune anyway, but I was thinking about how things were 10 years ago and around the time Blair first got in...
Even then I was sceptical about a lot of the spin and the bullshit like the millennium dome, but he seemed more like an overbearing but well meaning Christian youth club leader (whom you could run rings round) rather the troubled-looking, old, warmonger control freak he has now become....
the country was still a bit fucked (especially after Major) but there was the start of the dot-com euphoria and all this wonderful new multimedia technology (even if half of it didn't quite work properly and you had to use sketchy dial up connections..)
plus - best of all, you genuinely were being given a "bit of a chance" to do something "alternative". I'm not sure whether it was by accident or design, but the nanny state surveillance methods (although extant, having been put into place in the mid 90s post CJA by the Tories) weren't at all being used to their full extent - you could get away with anything it seemed - squatting, parties, drugs.. jobs were easy to get and had loads of slack time and resources as well.....
anyone else was around on the scene at that time notice this?
my friends at the time were cracking a new squat every other weekend ; often they'd have one set of buildings to live in and another to party! the cops never gave us any real grief either, nor even the property companies....
There were also times when it did seem that a deliberate "laissez-faire" strategy was in operation to see how "cool britannia" (remember that?) coped with less regulation (stuff like cannabis "decriminalisation", the Lambeth experiment, superclubs (which clearly were linked with dance music/drugs culture rather than booze) actually getting licensed etc....
The govt even tolerated the Exodus lot and let them buy the farm at the last minute instead of evicting them (a minister does not make a u-turn like that without being authorised to do so)
In hindsight, were we all given a chance and fucked it up?
Is "Neo-puritanism/authoritarianism" becoming a danger to the world? I've been closely monitoring social/political developments across the World for about 10 years now, and am becoming worried at some of the things I am seeing - not even so much from politicians (who are corrupt and self-serving the world over) but from the people in various countries.....
after all most Western (and even many Eastern) nations do have some sort of election and a range of candidates)
people are worried about extreme right parties getting more and more votes worldwide but I don't think that the kind of "old-style fascism" (i.e white skinheads marching in the street) is the real threat to the future... globalisation has made immigration and travel a vital part of the world market economy and that isn't going to disappear..
what is the real threat IMO is the "normal people" voting in by their own free will governments which reverse the "permissive society" gains of the 1960s to 1990s and re-introduce a lot more authoritarian/puritan controls on society (but those which would still allow the market economy to operate)
what does everyone else think?

Children of 11 to be fingerprinted The Sunday times march 04,2007
CHILDREN aged 11 to 16 are to have their fingerprints taken and stored on a secret database, internal Whitehall documents reveal.
The leaked Home Office plans show that the mass fingerprinting will start in 2010, with a batch of 295,000 youngsters who apply for passports.
The Home Office expects 545,000 children aged 11 and over to have their prints taken in 2011, with the figure settling at an annual 495,000 from 2014. Their fingerprints will be held on a database also used by the Immigration and Nationality Directorate to store the fingerprints of hundreds of thousands of asylum seekers.
The plans are outlined in a series of “restricted” documents circulating among officials in the Identity and Passport Service. They form part of the programme for the introduction of new biometric passports and ID cards.

Iraqi’s plea to US mothers Inside Iraq :hopeless:
Quote:
An Iraqi refugee has made a plea to American mothers - please don't send your sons to Iraq.
Um Sama, a teacher who had to flee her home after death threats, said the current violence sweeping her country was due to the presence of foreign troops.
She was speaking as part of http://news.sky.com/skynews/insideiraq, Sky's in-depth look at the country four years after the invasion.
Mrs Sama is a Sunni who is married to a Shia man and insists there was no sectarian violence before the 2003 US-led military campaign.
She said her home town had become "just a place for massacres" where at least 10 people were killed every day - their bodies often left where they lay.
She said: "Our area - Mahmudiya, Latifiya and Yousufiya - is called the Triangle of Death. Chaos and killings are widespread so we had to leave when they threatened us.
"Before the war life was so normal. The ties were very strong because Latifiya is a tribal area.
"But after the occupation everything changed. We started to fear things that hadn't scared us before. We became afraid because anyone might fabricate something against us."
Mrs Sama said that her marriage had not raised any eyebrows.
She said: "We started a family together and not once did we think about him being a Shia and me being a Sunni or about our neighbour being a Christian or the other one being a Kurd."
She said she and others were also suffering from rising prices and widespread unemployment.
Asked if she had a message for the American people, she said: "Naturally I send a call to the Americans, especially to the American mothers, to prevent their sons from coming to Iraq.
"Because we have been destroyed. We are wounded and we don't want those who will cause us further wounds."

Sex offender bailed for wedding I just don't get that..:hopeless: How the hell can a judge do that..
What a stupid judge and what a stupid women. :yakk::yakk::yakk:
Who the hell marry a sex offender :yakk::yakk::yakk:
Quote:
A judge has been criticised for varying the bail conditions of a sex offender, allowing him to spend his wedding night in a hotel.
Kelvin Wagstaff, 36, from Bridgend, admitted two sex offences involving children at Cardiff Crown Court.
Sentencing is due to take place later this month, but Judge Philip Richards allowed his bail conditions to be changed for his wedding this Friday.
AM and MP David Davies described the decision as "absolutely extraordinary".
Mr Davies said that after pleading guilty Wagstaff should "have been remanded into custody immediately whilst awaiting sentence and certainly not given bail conditions that could then be relaxed in order for him to go swanning off to a hotel somewhere."
At an earlier hearing Wagstaff pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a girl under 13 and engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child under 16
Another charge of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child under 16 was ordered to lie on the file.
On Monday Wagstaff's barrister Jennet Treharne made a successful application to Judge Richards to vary his bail conditions.
Under the changes Wagstaff must still adhere to a curfew at the hotel between 1800 GMT to 0800 GMT.
The conditions will transfer back to his home address following Friday's wedding celebrations.
MP Mr Davies has Prescoed open jail, which houses sex offenders, in his Monmout
constituency.
He said Wagstaff's victims' and their parents "must be appalled that a man who has pleaded guilty to a severe sexual offence is being allowed to go off and have a honeymoon in a hotel somewhere".:yakk:
"As a father of young children myself, I think it is absolutely disgusting."
No sympathy
He added: "I suspect that part of the problem is that prisons are so full that judges are being told unofficially not to put people in them".
Michele Elliot, director of the child protection charity, Kidscape, said: "I think the judge would have done the future bride a favour by insisting that the man adhered to his bail conditions.
"He obviously is a danger to children and I hope there are no children at the wedding.
"I have no sympathy for his wedding plans. Considering what he has done he does not deserve the courtesy of being allowed to get married."

German Incest Case… theres been a case of a brother n sister who have had 4 kids
The whole thing is a bit too sick to imagine really for sure but some people on the radio were saying that the main reason that people were against them was because there was a chance that the poor childrens health could suffer for being the result of an incestual union yet by this same reasoning we shouldn't let people with congenitive disabilities / haemophiliacs etc. have children because of the health risk of any offspring they have...
And to start all that type of government intervention in family life brings back memories in Germany of sixty or so years ago...

UK : East : crime drop in Ipswich during December 06 – a sad indictment on society… you might think this is a strange subject line; why am I not happy that crime went down in my town last year? There were 100 less burglaries in December for a start, and a drop in other crimes on the street..
Remember what happened though - 5 prostitutes were murdered, and as part of the investigation town was literally flooded with cops; hundreds of extra bobbies, tens of CCTV cars, nearly every force in the UK was here at one point..
it was Middle Englands dream - you literally could not go down any street in some areas without seeing a police officer, which is what all the "Daily Mail" readers seem to clamour for.
Has society become so dysfunctional that a significant minority of people seem to need a police state to deter them from trying to help themselves to others' property?

Three significant items in this issue of the Democracy Now's coverage on the war on peace:
1. A new Iraqi law being proposed paves the way for denationalizing the Iraqi oil industry and a regional breakup of the country. Also a few words on Iran, the Neo-conservative's saber rattling and a reminder the country is the world's third biggest oil producer...
2. Continued coverage of Vulture funds and third world debt.
3. A well known civil rights lawyer comments of the impact of government surveillance in the war on terror and it's affect on democracy.
