Hepatitis C Trust News Letter Dear All
We have recently had the following petition approved for the Prime Minister's website.
Please would you take the time to sign in and please forward/publicise this link to anyone you know who would be willing to support it. The more signatures we gain the better and the whole process takes less than a minute – just click on the link.
Petiton is here
"We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to accept that the current public hepatitis C awareness campaign is not working and that the rate of diagnosis is nowhere near enough to prevent thousands of avoidable deaths. We further petition the Prime Minister to make it a government priority to do far more to diagnose the hundreds of thousands people in the UK who still do not realise that they are infected with this potentially life-threatening disease and then provide dedicated funding for their care and treatment".
Your support in this would be much appreciated.
Secondly, we have been contacted by Hepasist, a Bulgarian patient association who have asked for our support in signing a petition for them.
There are approximately 250,000 -350,000 hepatitis sufferers in Bulgaria. However, the disease is far from being addressed as a major public health issue and treatment is not being offered to patients. There is a huge waiting list (many patients have been waiting to get the treatment for more than 1.5 years) but nothing seems to be happening.
Hepasist, the only Bulgarian organisation devoted to hepatitis C, has practically exhausted all their means to try to negotiate with their health authorities.
In order to support their fight, it has now launched a national online campaign which aims to collect votes from people all over Europe. Through this initiative they hope to grab their government’s attention.
Hepasist truly believes that if enough pressure is built up (especially if this pressure is coming from abroad), their health authorities will eventually have to start taking action against the disease and patients will finally be offered treatment. With that in mind, we kindly ask for your help. The voting process is extremely easy and takes less than 30 seconds. All you need to do is to click on the link and fill in your details (name/email and occupation)
Vote here
By extending your support to the Bulgarians you will be ultimately saving lives.
Thank you
From the Hepatitis C Trust

Israeli activists have blocked central Tel Aviv with razor wire from the Apartheid Wall. The activists stretched the razor wire across Basel Street with a sign from the Wall that reads in Arabic, Hebrew and English: "Anyone who touches the fence endangers their life." The twenty activists from Anarchists Against the Wall, who attend the weekly Friday demonstrations against the Apartheid Wall in Bil'in, set up the blockade at around 2pm and started handing out flyers to passers
by explaining the action.
The action was taken to protest the Apartheid Wall being built through the West Bank, as well as severe travel restrictions on Palestinians. The leaflets remind Israelis that they bear responsibility for the suffering of Palestinians as a result of their government's apartheid policies.

UK : East : "Redcaps" help evict squatters! From this is Essex..
WTF? I thought redcaps (Military police) had no jurisdiction over a civilian high street.....
Unless maybe one or more of the squatters were serving in HM Forces; OTOH I thought that the MOD would sort out housing for their personnel?
If they were military then this is yet another hidden cost of the war...
Colchester: Squatters get marching orders
Squatters were evicted from an office block - almost a month after they set up home in the building.
Police in riot gear were sent to Colchester High Street on Friday to oversee the operation and make sure it passed safely.
A team of four PCSOs, two military police and other uniformed officers lined the street outside the building next to Subway, while their colleagues entered the squat to "shadow" a bailiff working for a private landlord.
Six men and one woman were found to be sleeping in the building, all of whom left peacefully clutching bags and personal items.

Pleasure tax for prostitution
Quote:
Cologne will earn a record 828,000 euros (555,000 pounds) in "sex tax" revenues this year, a figure well above expectations when the levy was first introduced by Germany's fourth largest city in 2004.
Cologne officials, who say their city is a worldwide pioneer in taxing prostitution, were quoted in local media reports on Friday saying the sex tax component of the "pleasure tax" had jumped from 790,000 euros in 2005 to about 828,000 this year.
Prostitution is legal in Germany and sex workers are required to pay tax on their income and a value-added tax.

macdonald’s ceases trading really pleased to see this
Farmers 'force' McDonald's out
A McDonald's restaurant in a Devon town is closing because it cannot compete with local traders, say campaigners.
The company said "trading patterns" in Tavistock had changed over recent years and the site was no longer suitable.
In a statement, McDonald's said it would try to move 27 staff employed at the restaurant to branches in Plymouth.
The restaurant, which opened in 1999, will close on Saturday while Tavistock farmers' market thrives with a prestigious food award.
'Quality food'
The market was voted the best in the region by Country Life magazine and won the title Best Food Town in the South West this year.
John Taylor, Tavistock Forward and EatWise chairman, said: "It just goes to show that the food is so good here we have seen them off.
"Because of the quality of our local food, McDonald's has not been able to compete. I think there is definitely a link.
"We have made every effort to make Tavistock a haven for local food and McDonald's wasn't local food, so they suffered."
A McDonald's spokesman said: "With 1,250 restaurants across the UK, it's essential that we continue to have the right restaurants in the right places.
"Since the restaurant opened in 1999, the trading patterns of Tavistock high street have changed and as a result we have taken the difficult decision to cease trading at this site."

Tornado Destroyed Homes
Updated: 04:49, Friday December 08, 2006
More than 20 homes remain off limits today after a tornado brought devastation to a residential area of north London.
Local authorities in Kensal Green are preparing to assess the damage caused by yesterday's storm.
Six people were hurt and 150 homes were damaged when the freak weather hit the area.
It is feared the weakened chimneys of many of the properties could now be a serious safety hazard.
Authorites have confirmed that 24 houses are now uninhabitable, while other residents are only being allowed back into their homes to collect belongings.
Tornado struck in seconds
Local people are being looked after in a local hall and are being asked to call 020 8937 5255 for the latest information.
One man has been released from hospital after treatment for a minor head injury, while five people were treated at the scene for minor injuries and shock.
Insurers estimate that the damage will run into millions of pounds.
Reports of the tornado came in from Chamberlayne Road in Kensal Rise at 11am, and 25 fire engines were sent to the scene.
Dawn Butler, Labour MP for Brent South, told Sky News: "We have to try and make sure that those people who are put out and not able to get their belongings that it does not have a detrimental effect upon their Christmas."
Sky News weather forecaster Francis Wilson said tornadoes generate winds in excess of 100mph.

Censorship fears rise as Iran blocks access to top websites
Iran yesterday shut down access to some of the world's most popular websites. Users were unable to open popular sites including Amazon.com and YouTube following instructions to service providers to filter them.
Similar edicts have been issued against Wikipedia, the internet encyclopaedia, IMDB.com, an online film database, and the New York times site. Attempts to open the sites are met with a page reading: "The requested page is forbidden."
The clampdown was ordered by senior judiciary officials in the latest phase of a campaign that has seen high-speed broadband facilities banned in an attempt to impede "corrupting" foreign films and music.
It is in line with a campaign by Iran's Islamist president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to purge the country of western cultural influences.

Living on the moon? I have often wondered about the moon landing!!!!
Think most of us have seen programs in the television about why it's not possible that it have happend..
Heat shields on the rocket wasnt strong enough,to prevent the rocket in burning up when it entered the atmosphere..
Shadows on the moon,the flagg,footprints..ect..ect.
Do you believe that we have been on the moon ?
Home sweet home?
Now they want us to live up there!
Green Light For Moon Base
Nasa is planning to build a permanently occupied base on the moon.
It is being described as the first step towards creating settlements in space.
Building work will start after a new series of flights to the moon begins in 2020.
Experts say they hope it will eventually become a stepping stone for future missions to Mars and other planets.
The habitat, most likely at the lunar north pole, will serve as a science outpost as well as a testbed for technologies needed for future travel to planets.
"We're going for a base on the moon," Scott 'Doc' Horowitz, Nasa's associate administrator for exploration, said.
Plans for what the base will look like and what astronauts would do there have yet to be determined.
Nasa has also not projected a date when the base would go into operation.
The moon's polar sites are preferred to equatorial regions because of more moderate temperatures and longer periods of sunlight.
This is critical for the solar-powered electrical systems Nasa plans to develop.
Scientists also suspect the poles have resources such as hydrogen, ice and other materials that could be used for life support.
"It's exciting," said Nasa deputy administrator Shana Dale. "We don't know as much about the polar regions."
The US had already announced plans to develop new spacecraft to travel to the moon and land on its surface for the first time since the last Apollo flight there in 1972.
It also plans to provide a communications system linking Earth and the moon.
BRITISH Government plans for the surveillance of all children
Quote:
Spend the money on lunch programs at local schools and hiring more child services workers, instead of having to little of them with to big of case loads....that when abused kids fall through the cracks. How come there is always a "new Plan", what about putting money into the system we already have and make it better.
Because that would be
a) An intelligent thing to do, and
b) Doesn't make good headlines for them to say "look what we've been doing for people while we have been in government" at the next election... [evil]Whoring for the media again[/evil]. If you are going to try and "fix" something after all, you have to do it in a way no one thought of before so it's a "good idea" you had. Otherwise someone else might grab the headlines if it works...:you_crazy:you_crazy:you_crazy
I'm fascinated to know who will be deciding what a "positive" role model is, and if they will get the natty uniform, complete with jack boots and insignia (maybe a special red version of the swastika...)
I'm all for protecting children, and making this world a place where they all get a good start in life. I fail to see how collecting information with a view to destroying their most important relationship (which is what the purpose of this surveillance boils down to essentially), using fairly nebulous definitions to decide who's will, and who's won't be judged unhealthy is going to help any children whatsoever. Growing up in an atmosphere of uncertainty and paranoia isn't going to help anyone.
Another one of those laws put through in the "but we're protecting the children. Nobody can object to that" school of fascist human rights erosion... Add the various new "anti terrorist" laws, and this country is starting to become a very scary place to live... The idea that my sons life is going to be scrutinised and documented "for his safety" leaves me with a serious case of itchy emigration feet - not just because the "positive role model" idea worries me, but also because I am extremly unhappy allowing his life to be invaded and documented in this way. He has rights too, and one of the most basic rights this country has believed in, and fought to protect over the years is the right to freedom and privacy.
Doubtless the usual answer to objections over this invasion of privacy will be trotted out, as is generally the case when a government tries to do something (else) morally abhorrent under the banner of "protecting" us. Only the guilty need fear, as the "innocent" have nothing to hide....:you_crazy Either the answer of the hopelessly naive, or the truly evil - any sane person knows that every human being has things that they wish to be kept secret, or private, for various reasons (which are probably private too, and only a few of which are in any way nefarious)....
Save us from people who are trying to do things "for the good of all". At least your average tyrant is predictable and honest - you know that the only comfort he cares for is his own.
Aldous Huxley wrote a novel that was (IMO) much scarier than anything in 1984 - it was called "Brave new world", and was set in a world where everybody was happy, and nobody rebelled or upset the system (apart from the main character). All was kept controlled with surveillance that citizens were happy with, because it had "always been there". They were fed a diet of "happy chemicals", and "wholesome TV", and nobody ever went hungry etc...Such a cheerfully anaesthetized living hell...:hopeless::hopeless::hopeless::hopeless::hopeless::hopeless::hopeless:
BRITISH Government plans for the surveillance of all children

BRITISH Government plans for the surveillance of all children
including information on whether they eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, have been condemned as a Big Brother system.
Experts say it is the biggest state intrusion into the role of parents in history.
Changes are being introduced after the death of a girl from abuse. They include a database tracking all 12 million children in England and Wales from birth.
The Government expects the program to be operating within two years.
But critics say the electronic files will undermine family privacy and destroy the confidentiality of medical, social work and legal records.
Doctors, schools and the police will have to alert the database to a wide range of "concerns". Two warning flags on a child's record could start an investigation.
There will also be a system of targets and performance indicators for children's development. Children's services have been told to work together to make sure targets are met.
Child-care academics, practitioners and policy experts attending a conference at the London School of Economics will express concern about how the system will work.
Dr Eileen Munro, an expert on child protection, said that if a child caused concern by failing to make progress towards state targets, detailed information would be gathered.
That would include subjective judgements such as "is the parent providing a positive role model?", as well as sensitive information such as a parent's mental health.
"They include consuming five portions of fruit and veg a day, which I am baffled how they will measure," she said. "The country is moving from the traditional 'parents are free to bring children up as they think best as long as they are not abusive or neglectful' to a more coercive 'parents must bring children up to conform to the state's views of what is best'."
The Children Act 2004 gave the Government the powers to create the database.
The potential for investigations by social services or the police into thousands of children and their families for "innocuous" reasons has alarmed many experts.
"When you are looking for a needle in a haystack, is it necessary to keep building bigger haystacks?" said Jonathan Bamford, the assistant commissioner at the Information Commissioner's office.
Keeping check on 12 million children, when the justification for the database was that 3 million or 4 million were in some way "at risk", was "not proportionate", he said.
We got off lightly up here - they normally trial this kind of stuff in Scotland and they havent :weee:
Its crazy to have this kind of surveillance - these kids will grow up having beeen snooped on everyday of their lives :you_crazy:you_crazy:you_crazy

UK : East : Greene King hits back at nimbys Raise a glass :)
Its not very often I defend companies against local people - but its a local company that provides many jobs here, and TBH the rich old fart had an appeal, plenty of dialogue with GK and a Court cases - he should simply have walked away and accepted defeat at the first court case.
He's clearly got the time and resources to moan and whinge but as a retired architect he's someone with enough brain in his head and life experience to realise that if you live in the street down the road from a pub there might be a bit of noise.
If its really that bad there's plenty of places he could move to round here with absolutely fuck all, no pubs, no shops, just houses where people like him can spend the remaining days of their pathetic lives complaining about everything..
FFS Its only an hour until midnight as well for weekends, not even a 3am license...
Quote:
A RETIRED architect who protested against a pub's late opening plans told last night how he feared having to take out a new mortgage on his home after being threatened with legal action by the owner.
When brewer Greene King applied last year to extend the opening hours of the Dog and Partridge, in Crown Street, Bury St Edmunds, dozens of residents joined forces to protest.
They challenged the pub's bid to stay open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays first at the council, and when that failed, at the magistrates' court.
But the group - led by Church Walk-based Simon Harding, 64 - lost both appeals against the change in opening hours, though in April magistrates turned down Greene King's requests for costs.
The magistrates' decision is now being challenged by the brewing pub chain, which is going to the High Court's costs division to seek £29,000 in costs from the four residents who challenged them in the magistrates' court.
Greene King has defended its action, claiming it merely sought to establish the principal that people should contribute towards the costs of cases they lose in court.
But the four residents involved fear the brewer's actions might put other concerned home-owners off protesting against licensing changes in the future.
Martin Whitworth, 82, of Crown Street, told how he was left “flabbergasted” when he opened the letter from Greene King.
“The figure is for all the people and the costs and the paperwork involved. We were flabbergasted when we opened the letter.
“If they win, we could have to take out a mortgage on our house. And we don't need that at our age. I am 82 and my wife, Sheila, is 80.”
But Mark Angela, managing director of the Greene King Pub Company, said: “We are not challenging the four people who brought the appeal, but the magistrate's decision not to award costs. We want to establish the principle that people should have to contribute to the costs of cases being heard a second time round.
“Otherwise, if all objectors could appeal without ever having to pay any costs, there is a real threat to the thousands of community pubs across the country. We will not be looking to recover more than the appellants can easily afford.
“When applying for our new licence for the Dog and Partridge, we listened to the concerns of the residents and wider community. We made considerable concessions as a result.
“The Licensing Authority did consider a number of other demands made by local residents but dismissed them. Having already had their say, four people decided to appeal against the council's decision and to insert new demands not included in the original hearing. They went ahead with the appeal in the full knowledge that if it was rejected, given that this was a second time round, there could be cost implications for them.
“We are sensitive to how our pubs should be run in the communities we serve and we are sorry that this dispute has arisen, especially after having spoken to the residents at length during the appeal process.
UK : HM Coastguard has input into licensing matters… This is something I found out whilst researching TENS licenses for the East
As well as the local District Councils, the cops, fire and HMRC, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency has significant input into local licensing policies in some areas (obviously not in Birmingham ;) - but might also be the case in other areas)
Initially this seemed rather strange but a bit of research shows that in some coastal areas the District Councils jurisdiction ends halfway along the shore with MCGA taking control from that point until the 12km territorial limit of UK sovereignty...
I remember reading somewhere that they even deployed a few units from Yarmouth Coastguard to monitor a rave in the East earlier this summer and even took license numbers of cars present....
