SE / UK : Dead addict may hold secret to 1986 Swedish Prime Minister murder A Swedish author who has written two books on the Palme killing said Mrs Rausing first contacted him in June 2011. She claimed she had learned that Palme had been killed by an entrepreneur who feared the politician was a threat to his business.
I remember this murder happening when I was a teenager, although that era was blighted across Europe by political violence especially in UK and FR, (terrorist bombs, strikes, assasinations and all sorts) this was viewed as unusual as Sweden is viewed as a relatively peaceful country
UK cops are also assisting with the investigation. One significant point is the Rausing family took their significant capital out of Sweden to England to escape high taxes, and thus would have had friends more towards the centre right of politics. The main Rausing bloke (the addict couples dad) was very hostile to the "socialist" politics of Sweden (which aren't all that left wing, though they do give good public services)
Most folk are aware extremists will not stop short of political assasination, but if a "normal business person" is prepared to murder a democratically elected of a European country that is serious stuff (it confirms my suspcions that there has been simmering civil warfare across Europe for the last 30 years).

Obituary: Neil Armstrong
Diffident emissary of mankind

US President Barack Obama has led tributes to astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon, who died on Saturday at the age of 82.
Mr Obama said on his Twitter feed: "Neil Armstrong was a hero not just of his time, but of all time."
Hundreds of millions watched Armstrong land on the Moon on 20 July 1969 and describe it as: "One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind."
The line became one of the most famous quotes of the 20th Century.
Armstrong's family confirmed his death in a statement on Saturday, saying he had died from complications after surgery to relieve four blocked coronary arteries.
The family statement praised him as a "reluctant American hero" and urged his fans to honour his example of "service, accomplishment and modesty".

'Diffident' emissary of mankind
"The next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink," the family said.
Mr Obama thanked Armstrong for showing the world "the power of one small step".
'Nerdy engineer'Last November he received the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest US civilian award.
Many of Armstrong's colleagues and friends paid tribute to him as a modest, private man who never sought the limelight.
Michael Collins, a pilot on the Apollo 11 Moon mission, said: "He was the best, and I will miss him terribly."
Armstrong famously refused most public appearances and interviews.
In a rare interview with Australian TV this year, he reflected on a moment during his three hours on the Moon when he stopped to commemorate US astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts who had died in action.
"It was special and memorable, but it was only instantaneous because there was work to do," he said.
More than 500 million TV viewers around the world watched its touchdown on the lunar surface.
Armstrong and fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin collected samples, conducted experiments and took photographs during their moonwalk.
Mr Aldrin told the BBC he would remember his colleague as a "very capable commander and leader of a world achievement".
"We're missing a great spokesman and leader in the space programme," he said.
Apollo 11 was Armstrong's last space mission. In 1971, he left the US space agency Nasa to teach aerospace engineering.
President Obama described him as "one of the greatest American heroes of all time"
Born in 1930 and raised in Ohio, Armstrong took his first flight aged six with his father and formed a lifelong passion for flying.
He flew Navy fighter jets during the Korean War in the 1950s, and joined the US space programme in 1962.
Correspondents say Armstrong remained modest and never allowed himself to be caught up in the glamour of space exploration.
"I am, and ever will be, a white-socks, pocket-protector, nerdy engineer," he said in February 2000 in a rare public appearance.
Nasa chief Charles Bolden paid tribute to him as "one of America's great explorers".
"As long as there are history books, Neil Armstrong will be included in them, remembered for taking humankind's first small step on a world beyond our own."
A sad day for Norway. Then the day terror came and hit scandinavia big time. First a bomb(in Oslo's ministry quarter) blast then shooting at a youth-camp for Arbeiderpartiets Ungdoms Fylkning, the youth organisation of the governing party, Arbeiderpartiet(labour). The shooter is arrested. We the public have not been told who is behind it but police spokesman says those two attacks is related. Death toll for the bomb is atm 7 and for the shooting 9. several is severe injured.
Being a norwegian in exile this hits me as well, I am a sad man now.
My thought goes to the families that lost their loved ones and to them who are at 'touch and go' in this moment at the hospital. May U all live through this.

BBC News - Julian Assange: Ecuador grants Wikileaks founder asylum
Julian Assange granted asylum by Ecuador - live coverage | Media | guardian.co.uk
Earlier, the UK Foreign Office warned it could lift the embassy's diplomatic status to fulfil a "legal obligation" to extradite the 41-year-old by using the Diplomatic and Consular Premises Act 1987.
That allows the UK to revoke the diplomatic status of an embassy on UK soil, which would potentially allow police to enter the building to arrest Mr Assange for breaching the terms of his bail.
13:07 BST
My colleague Rajeev Syal has just been at a briefing with Ecuadorean officials inside the embassy. The government of the South American country believes the British government has launched a campaign of intimidation against the embassy, he reports. An official told him:
We are very surprised and disappointed. There was clear intimidation of the embassy. The Ecuadorean government has been clear from the start that we were seeking diplomatic assurances within international law.
The Ecuadorean officials said they had been particularly surprised by yesterday's development because they had been involved in ongoing negotiations over Assange with Britain until that point.
But the letter received in Quito and the arrival of a large police presence at the embassy in Knightsbridge yesterday was a marked changed in approach, they said.
They are still promising a big announcement before 4pm British time.
14:49 BST
The diplomatic row between the UK and Ecuador is really shaping this story today. According to the New York Times, just before the announcement, President Rafael Correa declared:
No one is going to terrorize us!
On Wednesday, Mr. Patiño, the foreign minister, said that the British authorities had threatened to barge into the country’s embassy in London if officials did not hand over Mr. Assange. “Today we have received from the United Kingdom an explicit threat in writing that they could assault our embassy in London if Ecuador does not hand over Julian Assange,” Mr. Patiño said at a news conference in Quito, adding defiantly, “We are not a British colony.”

UK : East : Haverhill couple win Euromillions this town is the butt of many jokes - some are mine and others from locals (I am actually a London incomer to EA myself but have now been here for over 6 years) and even if the couple do invest much of their winnings locally it would take more than that to sort out the areas problems (its no fault of theirs anyway but the planners from before they were born)) - so its impressive to hear they are still planning to stay there and keep a business there..
(if he does decide to grow his business a place selling electronic kit as well as traditional instruments in Mid Suffolk would make sense, especially timed for when the John Peel Centre expands  )

there are some bits in English. The refugees are from Somalia and Iraq. Some were protesting at the Dutch equivalent of Border Force.

Batman premier screening in Colorado: Gunman Kill 14 and wounds 50 [h=1]Batman cinema shooting: 14 people shot dead and 50 injured in Denver[/h][h=2]A masked gunman has shot dead 14 people and wounded more than 50 others at a Batman film premiere of The Dark Knight Rises in the US, police said.[/h]
Eyewitnesses reported that a baby was shot at point blank range and some of the victims were children as a single masked gunman went on a rampage. It was not clear whether the baby was killed in the attack.
The gunman, who was quickly arrested, was reportedly wearing body armour and a gas mask and used tear gas in the assault inside the cinema.
The shooting happened at the Century Aurora 16 Movie Theater in a mall in the suburb of Aurora, Denver, Colorado which was packed for a midnight premiere. Two separate devices were also said to have been found in vehicles outside the cinema.
Local reporter Justin Joseph of KDVR said that, according to witnesses, the moment Batman appeared on screen a man wearing body armour and a gas mask, and wielding at least one long gun, stood up and faced the crowd.

The New York Times calls him "arguably the most important intellectual alive."
The Boston Globe calls him "America's most useful citizen"
He was recently voted the world's number one intellectual in a poll by Prospect and Foreign Policy magazines.
We're talking about Noam Chomsky, professor of linguistics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and one of the foremost critics of U.S. foreign policy. Professor Chomsky has just released a new book titled "Failed States: The Abuse of Power and the Assault on Democracy."
It examines how the United States is beginning to resemble a failed state that cannot protect its citizens from violence and has a government that regards itself as beyond the reach of domestic or international law.
In the book, Professor Noam Chomsky presents a series of solutions to help rescue the nation from turning into a failed state.
They include: Accept the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court and the World Court; Sign the Kyoto protocols on global warming; Let the United Nations take the lead in international crises; Rely on diplomatic and economic measures rather than military ones in confronting terror; and Sharply reduce military spending and sharply increase social spending.
In his first broadcast interview upon the publication of his book, Professor Noam Chomsky joins us today from Boston for the hour.

IDF increases conscription by 20% BBC News - Israeli PM Netanyahu's party backs conscription law
Quote:
Mr Netanyahu earlier urged the party to approve the proposal, saying that "everyone must bear the burden".
"We will provide positive incentives to those who serve and negative incentives to draft dodgers," the prime minister said.
Mr Netanyahu's main coalition partner, Kadima, earlier threatened to leave the coalition unless the changes were approved.
But other coalition partners representing ultra-Orthodox Jews made opposite threats, squeezing Mr Netanyahu into a tight political corner.
After Sunday's vote, the prime minister is reported to have agreed with the Kadima leader, Shaul Mofaz, to form a panel to draft the new law.
In February, Israel's Supreme Court ruled that the so-called Tal Law was unconstitutional and set an ultimatum for a revised law to be brought in by August.
That's 10% of Yeshiva students who will now have to do military service, and 10% of the population are not Jewish, so I make it a 20% increase in conscription.
It's going to cause changes in the IDF, in the Hasid Orthodox community, the Ultra Religious parties, and the non-Jewish residents of Israel.
I don't think it's gearing up for war - more like a case of trying to bring social engineering to parts of Israeli soceity that don't get basic military training.
2 years for Army, 4 for Navy, 5 for Air Force, and of course once you're out, you still have to do one month per year active service.
Huge mushroom detected in the Baltic The Ocean Explorer
Quote:
The Ocean X Team dove down to the circle-shaped object in the Baltic Sea and met something they never experienced before. First they thought it was just stone or a rock cliff, but after further observations the object appeared more as a huge mushroom, rising 3-4 meters/10-13 feet from the seabed, with rounded sides and rugged edges. The object had an egg shaped hole leading into it from the top, as an opening. On top of the object they also found strange stone circle formations, almost looking like small fireplaces. The stones were covered in something resembling soot.
Mean World Syndrome
Quote:
Mean World Syndrome is a phenomenon where the violence-related content of mass media convinces viewers that the world is more dangerous than it actually is, and prompts a desire for more protection than is warranted by any actual threat. Mean World Syndrome is one of the main conclusions of cultivation theory. The term “Mean World Syndrome” was coined by George Gerbner, a pioneer researcher on the effects of television on society, when he noted that people who watched a lot of TV tended to think of the world as an unforgiving and scary place.
