Do you ever ponder the construction of incredible inventions? Wish you could make digital masterpieces, living visual landscapes, audio mazes or mind-blowing installations if you only had the pennies and a place to do it? If your head is fit to bust with inspiration but your pockets are empty then pay attention because here is your chance to get that pipe dream launched into the big stream!
For almost a decade illumiNaughty has worked to create bigger and more breath-taking installations and performances at each event. Since moving to Manchester Academy, IllumiNaughty’s ‘Indoor Festival’ has quadrupled in scale and there are now 4 floors of chaos and a multitude of nooks and crannies to fill!
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
The Goblins at IllumiNaughty HQ have set aside £1000 to help any budding crafts person, tech-wizard, sculptor, VJ, programmer or sci-fi boffin conceptualise any creation in the field of art, science or technology to be showcased at an IllumiNaughty event to audiences of up to 2000 people.
Creations must be professional, functional, safe and ideally interactive. Above all else, they **MUST** engage or enchant an illumiNaughty crowd. The Goblins are looking for hard working, practical creatives capable of designing and executing their own projects to make our audiences heads explode.
Let your imagination take the reins - nothing is impossible – the only limit is your own imagination.
HOW TO APPLY
We will fund creative ideas, however small or large, up to a maximum of £1000.
To apply send a proposal to team@illuminaughty.co.uk of up to 500 words max explaining what you want to create. Please include details of how it will be integrated into the event, and how much time you will need to make your idea a reality. In addition to what you need to let us know how much funding you need for your creation, and how the money would be spent.
Your proposal will be considered by the production team and then the team will make the decision on the grant winner(s).

In Roger Sanchez’s eyes, music is cyclical. It’s about “drawing influences from the past and re-imagining it in a completely different way.” Sanchez’s musical roots go back to the mid ‘80s, when the then-teenage breakdancer started DJing, and became fascinated with the new house music making its way to his hometown of New York from Chicago.
“At that time, the dominant forms of dance music in New York were freestyle and hip-hop, and house was almost the return of disco,” he says. “It was stripped down and four-to-the-floor, but there was something really magical about it, and it drew me in.”
He quickly moved on to producing — his early releases came out under the name Roger S. — and promoting. Many of Sanchez’s early parties were paid for with money he made selling mixtapes on the street in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village.
“It was me and a couple other guys that were on the block, and I’d stand there with a boombox and people would come up and buy the tapes,” he says. “That money was what I would use when I had to pay bar guarantees, and that’s when my real DJ following took off in New York.”
Those mixtapes were, in some ways, Sanchez’s early forays into the business end of the music industry. Since then, he has launched four different record labels. His most recent and most successful label, Stealth, was founded in 2002. Since then, it’s become a launching pad for many of today’s fastest rising young producers.
“One of the things I’ve focused on, beyond releasing my own music, is have it be a conduit for new talent,” he says. “That’s something I’ve always done all my life, ever since I’ve been in the position to do so, is bring the next generation through.” He’s also won multiple awards, including a 2003 Grammy for Best Remixed Recording for his reworking of No Doubt’s “Hella Good.” He also won the first-ever Best Podcast Award at the International Dance Music Awards for his podcast “Release Yourself.”
Sanchez also hosts a weekly Release Yourself terrestrial and online radio show which reaches over 15 million listeners worldwide. For the last 13 years he has also curated a series of Release Yourself compilation albums for Stealth, multi-disc sets which are known for their explosive blend of deep house, Latin, tribal and tech sounds. Sanchez’s own Release Yourself parties are notorious all night affairs, explosive five hour sets expertly crafted to give clubgoers an immersive and uplifting experience.
As a 20-plus year veteran of the electronic music game and label owner, he’s happy to see DJs and producers selling out stadium-sized venues. That said, he worries that all this success has caused electronic music to get a little formulaic. “Commercial dance music sounds homogenous these days,” he laments. Roots, he says, is meant in part as an alternative. He says that in the last couple years, he’s seen a movement back towards slower, funkier dance music, with artists using new production techniques and applying them to classic dance music sounds.
“The soul is back,” he says. “The slower grooves, the more disco-inspired sounds, there’s a humanization with the live instrumentation. They’re funkier, they’re groovier, they’re sexier. I’ve become excited about the growth of the underground movement, and the regeneration of classic house music merged with techno and deep house. This is where I’ve really moved towards with my own sound."
That said, he’s adamant about the fact that the goal isn’t to make music that sounds like it was made 20 years ago. Instead, he wants to fuse the funky, sexy feel of New York house — a sound he says infuses house with Latin percussion, gospel vocals and “a hip-hop attitude” — with the technical mastery of current house.
Take for instance “Troubleman,” the top 5 single he released this summer. That came together as a blues song overtop of a pulsating house track. Or his current single “My Roots,” a classic house track with elements of tribal & tech that is sure to be a club-banger. “My Roots” tips its hat to Roger’s groundbreaking work in the genre, updated with a modern production style.
“If you listen to a lot of the records that we made back in the ‘90s, there’s an astounding lack of bottom end. Nowadays, the bottom end is a lot more prominent and the equalization is a lot tighter. But I’ve also gone back to bring back some of that classic kind of grittiness… That’s the essence of that era.”
And that’s the essence of Sanchez. “I’m always moving forward, but never losing sight of where I’ve been.”
